And this is why I love what Joss does. While looking for some details about the map you see in Early's ship in 'Objects' Joss's choice of name manages to teach me some Civil War history along the way.

Well, if you print the picture, hold it at a 45 degree angle, with the light behind you and make sure that the top left edge face's north, then squint at it I think you'll find that..... you're absolutley right, he looks nothing like our Early.

Knowing Joss there will be some sort of connection given that Jubal A. was in the Civil War. Just have to work out what it is.

I think I read somewhere that Nathan Fillion is actually a descendant of the real Jubal Early, and suggested the name to Joss. I can't for the life of me remember where I heard that, but maybe it'll be mentioned in the second volume of the Firefly Companion?

From your second link:
Quote:

He is a distant relation of Confederate Civil War general Jubal Early, as per Joss Whedon's DVD commentary wherein he mentions why they named the villain Jubal Early in the last episode of Firefly.
So that's where I heard it, in Joss's commentary! Thanks for the links, I feel better now.
