FREDEP

(...or a rant about stupid dutch tv)

I was just watching some tv during dinner tonight, when suddenly there was an commercial for Firefly on one of the channels. Apparently they gonna show Firefly ( SHINY!! ), starting i believe this weekend. All nice and good you would say, but the add they where showing made Firefly seem like just some space action show , but hey that's probably just gonna draw some more viewers (hopefully).
Then I went to their website, where after some searching (great advertising ) i found this idiotic description:

translated from dutch:
American western/sf-series
500 lightyears in the future, a war is threatning the universe. The small spaceship Serenity tries to flee an strong regime en has to collect fuel an money to survive. Capt. Malcom Reynolds take charge of his strange travelcompanions and experiences nerfwrecking moments...

I always knew that dutch TV execs are just as stupid as those at fox', but this borders on complete insanity...
500 lightyears in the future - - Ahum, how do ya wanna measure time in a distance
a war is threatning the universe - - well i don't have to tell ya all how wrong that is...

Well you can all read the description, I translated it directly from dutch, so nothing is alterd nor modified... but this is just

We all know how bad advertising can ruin a show, so i fear for the worst here. I also wouldn't be suprised when they're gonna start folowing Fox' broadcast order, but i'll wait and see.
Also curious what they will do with the chinese

I actually was afraid this would happen, I just hope this will breed some Dutch browncoats.
But I'm just glad i've already got the DVD's, and i'm really glad that we'll be getting our movie

>>Don't mind all the typos, im goin' insane here....<<

SHAMBLEAU

Well, probably most people who watch won't have seen what they wrote, dumb as it is. Is the channel that Firefly is going to be on a major one? The Sci-Fi channel in Britain had relatively few viewers - it was no Sky Channel, much less the BBC. If the channel is a mainstream one, then it's all good, idiotic blurb notwithstanding.

I don't think you can describe the channel wich is going to show Firefly as a major channel (we only have about 9 real tv channels here). I don't think it matters much, since all the channels here cover the complete country and have probably the same amount of viewers
(I'm actually not quite up to date on these things, I mostly "import" my TV )

Well at least they haven't shown a commercial that tries to make it out to be a comedy. "A spaced ot tale of outerspace civilary" I still remember that line from from a next week on Firefly promo. And everytime I watched my copy of Out of Gas and the end credits came on and they ran that promotion it set my teeth on edge.

You know I think network excecutives everywhere share a collective mind. There is just something wrong with these people.

a collective mind, more a collective void....
Well I wrote them a mail pointing out their errors (and ofcourse telling them how greatfull I am for showing Firefly, and telling them what a great series it is yadayadayada). Maybe they'll change at least the 500 lightyears bit, cause' that just looks all kinds of stupid
Other than that, I have little hope. But that's the least i could do to support Firefly (besides buying the DVD's ofcourse, they're great). I just hope this will convert some new people (maybe I should start telling more people about it, now that it's showing here to)

Opps I misspelled chivalry members of the knighthood will be most displeased. No one tell Elton John okay. By the way Fredep the more people you tell the more people are likely to see the movie.Makeing it more likely that network executives will get it through thier collective void that putting this show back on the air might be profitable.

Me I'll tell anyone I think will listen.

Actually, I know someone who lives in the Netherlands and I told him to watch it. They showed the Train Job as the pilot episode. After that I told him to download Serenity and the rest of the episodes and disregard watching it broadcasted because it seems they are going to do it in FOX's order.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

They are going to broadcast it in Fox' order....
gorram idiots, i was afraid of that. Well i told them about the order "problems" in my mail, probably won't help, but hey on should try

(Dutch telle execs' are really idiotic, they actually cut episodes in halve , this is gonna go great )...
Well, i'm just gonnago spread the word then (no, not is a Book kinda way (although shooting kneekaps might help))

Huh, yur right, they already aired an ep last saturday (and just now I notice, great promotion, just great).
This makes my mail send to them look pretty stupid now
This all explaines why I hardly watch any TV...
Just download it, works a lot better&faster (plus ya don't get those anoying subs)

This whole threat is makin' me type way to much, just gettin' more and more worked up on all those stupid tv networks

edited to add:
The ratings for last sturdays episode simply sucked, guess what, they put the serie in the same timeslot as the dutch version of pop-idol (why do so many people whatch that kinda crap)

adding again:
I was also looking (and also mailing) at the wrong TV-channel, why do they keep changing the names of those channels here every year, i just don't get it anymore ( now i feel just as stupid as a fox exec)

one small thing:
be happy to only get stupid subs, instead of getting no original sound at all and the whole thing dubbed. badly, most of the time.

but there are only 16 million dutch (according to wikipedia) and 90 or so million german/austrian people so we get the additional 'comfort' af getting all our TV dubbed. I so envy all of you northern-europeans with the many differnt languages with small populations that don't make dubbing workable.

and no Firefly here (germany) yet. probably because they're still deciding how to dub it the worst possible way. they seem to almost always find it, given 2-3 years and probably a lot of money. I won't watch it and I won't even recommend it to anyone. I will just lend them my DVDs. but germans are tought to be too stupid to understand english and they seem to have learned that lesson. so I won't be recruiting a lot of fans here. my likeminded friends already are and other people I know wouldn't even try. too lazy or too disinterested or too put-off from the english lessons they had in school.

and they will dubb the movie too and it will be shown at least a year later than in the US and if I really get lucky the really big multiplex-cinema (about 20 normal cinemas and the biggest IMAX in europe) in my not too little hometown (500000 people) will also have a late night or around noon showing of the english version. I will take a day off to see it, I vow.

sorry for ranting, just wanted to make my dutch browncoat brothers/sisters feel better about what they get.

DEBBIEBUK1

What channel is it on, I have a few work colleagues in Netherlands I'd love to convert. And what *did* they do about dubbing the Chinese -that would really be "Chinese whispers" (is that a phrase generally used in the US as well as UK?)

@debbiebuk1: It's on a channel called Yorin saturday's at 21:00.
Haven't watch it on TV here yet, first ep was last saturday apperently but didn't knew it then, so i'll try to see it this saturday just to see what they did with the Chinese (probably just gonna go insane on the subs front, i just hate those, but yer' right Idefix, its better than dubbing)
And i saw the tv-add agian today, it's horrible, makes the serie look like really silly ...

Well seen this all, I doubt the Firefly will have much inpact here, but theres always some hope...
