So, once again i am posting something that all of you have probabaly already discussed. I just got done watching the last episode of the series that dealt with the bounty hunter or "body hunter." I always thought something was shady about the shepard but now I know something was up when the hunter said "he's no shepard." So, did I miss somethinng or was there any info ever revealed about shepard's past. I know that would have definitely made a cool episode-learning about the shepard's hidden past.

I'm sure it's been discussed too. However if you pay attention to things in other eps as well (which ones are eluding me right now) there are other references that he wasn't originally a Shepard as well. Like when they were in the shootout and he was a good shot, without killing anyone at that time.

Yea, its just the way the bounty hunter said it...as if the Shepard used to be something badass or something terrible.

Yes, Shepherd Book surely is "shady." He must not always have been a Shepherd. Shepherds don't know how to shoot guns. Shepherds don't know things about criminals like Niska. Shepherds don't know things about fast burn rocket shuttles. Shepherds, real Shepherds don't have super-special alliance IDs. Nope, real Shepherds don't.

Shepherd.

Exactly. And now we will never know why this "Shepard" does.

I will think of a signature later. It will be so stunningly brilliant your entire life will pale into insignificance when compared to the few words that will be written here.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

There is definitely more to Shephard Book than we got a chance to learn of in the series. After the events of the movie it appears we never will. I guess Joss is from the camp of thought that not all mysteries need to be solved. It certainly has kept us guessing and coming up with theories.

I have no doubt that Book was a shephard, but I also do not doubt that he was not always one. What drove him to take up the good book and the life of a preacher? What did he suffer through, or what acts did he commit that would drive him to cast aside his former life to be a shephard? We see that his knowledge appears to be vast, especially considering the criminal element of the 'verse. We saw he can handle a gun (shooting people in the kneecaps ain't as easy as he made it look in "War Stories") and he is a fair hand in hand to hand combat ("Serenity" pilot). Was he a criminal? A lawman?

We may never know, but it sure is great to speculate and discuss it, no?

SHINYED

The single biggest clue to Sheperd Book's past is revealed in Safe. His IDENT CARD is used to get the Alliance Cruiser officers to provide him with the surgery he needs.

The reaction generated from the card's readout indicate that Book was "something high-up" in the Alliance....as to what exactly, there have been thousands of posts speculating on that. We do know that he:
a) Knows how to fight
b) Knows how to shoot
c) Knows about all sorts of illegal things and people.
d) Knows much aboutr how the Alliance operates.
