Why do we women love Mal?

That's an easy question to ask and complex one to answer.

Of course there are the obvious ones. He's one fine looking man. Tall, just the right amount of muscles for his frame and do I need to mention the tight pants. And the naked scene in Trash.

Beautiful hair, incredible blue eyes.

Then there's Mal's personality and there's lots of contradictions here. He's so devoted to his "family" and his personal code of honor, and despite his occupation he is a good man. He also seems to show that he would give as much as he got if you could get him into bed. What woman wouldn't like that?

He is also complicated, frustrating, troubled and more than a bit lost. It seems to bring out the side of us that want to try to help him with his demons and make him whole again.

I could go on and on about each of these characteristics but I'll let you do that.

I love Mal's character....

(But not in a "I want to do him!" kind of way. More a "What a beautiful piece of humanity" kind of way.)

... because he is a adult man. He's not a "youth" on a journey, he's not an unentangled, boy-ish creature like, say, John Crichton. He's not discovering a new world and defending his ideals.

He's not about adventure - although he enjoys it occasionally - but rather about responsibility.

It's so rare and so so so so so so so so sexy.

It seems like every male tv hero has to be Peter Pan. Mal is not. Mal is a father, if anything.

He makes tough choices and owns them and will be the "bad guy" for it. He is tied to his own self-imposed duties and he likes it that way. He's almost a committment-phile. His relationships on the show are all centered around the theme of family, not sex or power or Being Chosen.

But yes. It's the sense of responsibility and his giant paternal streak. That's what I LOVE about him.

You were busy trying to get yourself lit on fire. It happens.

I can't help myself. He's just so pretty.

And, and, and... he's not afraid to cross-dress! He tried his best to help Yo-Saf-Bridge even after she knocked him out and almost helped kill his crew. He's mean, he knows it, and he's not afraid of it. But, he's also sweet, and... I think, when he carries out River in the movie... that's why I love him most. He may be lost, but he still does the right thing.

He's got character, he's got flaws, and he does the hard stuff.

Speaking as a man, I like Mal because he is loyal to a fault, kind to the people he respects, and he takes care of the people he is responsible for.

And he is a good lookin' man!

I think he's the most ambiguous character on the show, and it's a real question whether he's a good person who sometimes does bad things or really is a bad perso.

I really, really don't mind looking at him while he makes moral choices, either.

Gosh. I could get to lovin' on him my own self.

I find myself bein' alot like him before ever discovering Firefly. In turn I've been given the chance to see what other people see. For that I'll be eternally grateful for the character of Malcolm Reynolds.

I'm gonna have to agree with AgentRouka here. (It feels like I do that quite often.)

There were a few "Firefly" episodes where someone addressed Mal as "boy." That always threw me for a loop, because there's nothing particularly boyish about him. He's not trying to grow up, because he did that on a battlefield where men looked to him to keep them alive. He has no interest in finding himself, because he's busy with the immediate business of living. He doesn't want a mentor or a father figure, because he'll figure out his own damn way, thank you, and doesn't want you telling him how to live.

His strength is attractive, too. Another man might have been completely crushed by the loss of the war, but Mal's still flying. In a torture situation, he looks after the guy next to him -- keeps him sane, like he did for his troops. He can endure a lot of pain and he takes danger in his stride. That's kinda sexy in a cowboy-hero way.

He also steals things and kills people. And he can get really dark and scary and just radiate menace when he wants to. Which is sexy in a bad-boy way.

But then there's all that pain and that lost quality that make people want to save him. Or at least give him a hug. Anything to get a smile out of the man, because he's charming as anything when he does that.

I think that's my favorite shot in the whole 'Verse.

I think part of it is the thought of the noble pirate. He's technically a criminal, but with none of the really bad personality traits. As mentioned before, the GOOD bad boy.
You can't get any more attractive than that. Jeez! Just *LOOK* at him!!!!

I think that the most attractive thing about Mal is his inherent decency, his tendency to look out for the weak and helpless. I'm not sure that Mal always knows this about himself, but it's a quality that obvious to the other characters (and to the viewers as well).
Notice that when Saffron plays him in "Our Mrs. Reynolds" she doesn't go for an out and out seductress act. Instead she affects an unworldly, innocent persona--the kind of woman Mal would, in spite of himself, leap forward to protect. In "Jaynestown", Inara has Mal pegged when she says that he thinks of himself as a hard-hearted criminal, but he really has this "idiotic sense of nobility". It's this same sense of nobility that impells him to carry the unconscious River back on board Serenity even after he's kicked both of the Tams off and seen point-blank evidence that River's out of control.
Mal has no answer for Jayne when Jayne asks why the Tams are back on board. The bottom line, of course, is that Mal simply can't leave a helpless girl to the tender mercies of the Alliance. It's got nothing to do with River or Simon. It's about who Mal IS--whether he knows that about himself or not.

Well yeah, that too, but LOOK at him!!!!!

I agree that he might not even know about that aspect of himself. There are parts of the series and the movie where his darker side is explored, but there's a flicker of decency that won't let him be totally overwhelmed by that darkness. He might have even wanted to give himself over to it when he lost everything, but he just can't.

LOL! Yeah, my first response to the thread title is... Have you LOOKED at him??

But that's certainly not all. There's lots of pretty boys out there, but only one Mal. It's the good bad boy thing, and the little touch of vulnerability you see now and then. *sigh*

We need more Mal pictures LOL!

BTW - who called him boy in the series? I can't remember that. Seems wrong - he's such a man! Except that I've called him boy twice in this post... but you know what I mean.

When I was going through my RAF training we were shown "Twelve O'Clock High" (Gregory Peck was in it) as one of the classic films dealing with the problems of leadership.

Joss has clearly thought about the issues and keeps coming back to the problems of leadership. One of the strengths of Captain Mal Reynolds is that he deals with the problems of leading a crew as best he can and as a flawed human. We love him deeply because he always tries to do the right thing, whatever the cost.

Apart from that he is so darn cute that I almost wish I was a girl. Luckily the female characters are just as strong so I will stay male. Sigh, was there ever such a cast, anywhere, in the verse?
