New Reality TV show on Sci-Fi (MAD MAD HOUSE)

I wanted to see "Tripping the Riff" (which was rather mediocre) on the Sci-fi channel, so I found myself watching their new reality tv show that preceded its time slot: MAD MAD HOUSE.

I know we here at FFF.net are not huge fans of reality tv show, but I thought this one was different than the others. Rather than teaching people weekly that winners are people that lie, cheat, steal, and backstab - to win this show the contestants must show acceptance of alternative life-styles. Voting is not done by contestants (except in a tie), it is done by the "alts" that they live with.

I thought it was a healthier show altogether.

That being said - alternative lifestyles are things like Practicing Christians (the good ones - not the zealots), Homosexuals, Practicing Jews, and other non-mainstream ways of thinking and living. With only a few exceptions, most of the "alts" are just freaks. Dressing in Victorian clothing, having your teeth cosmetically altered into fangs and then bathing in and drinking blood is not an "alternative lifestyle" - its at best a "cry for help" and at worst "a desperate need for Zoloft".

Aside from that - I recommend the show at least once; just because it is somewhat positive as far as reality TV is concerned.

A very positive way of looking at the show Zeke023, but unfortunately it is still a reality show. I will not watch any reality TV, ever! I find reality TV to be scripted, and about as "real" as an episode of Gilligan's Island.

Still the message you say it conveys is a good one. Tolerance and having an open mind is something more people should practice.

When did non-zealot Christianity become considered an "alternative lifestyle" in the States? Last I heard it was as mainstream as apple pie.

If you never watch them, how do you know they all suck so much?

A few are actually alright television.

At the danger of being ofensive to some, I'll explain this comment. This is just an opinion.

Mainstream culture is "hedonism" not christianity. Common media depicts what is acceptable and normal. That common depiction includes common drug use, casual sex, and a plethora of other hedonistic behaviors.

Not having sex until marriage, not doing anything to excess, treating everyone with love - even your enemies (not passing judgement on others), giving to the poor, and forming a loving and intimate relationship with the divine...

well, how many people do you know that do those things? and how many movies and television shows depict that kind of lifestyle and associate it with Christianity?

Seems to me that it's rather abnormal by societal standards, hence "alternative lifestyle".

Most "Christians" [sic] aren't really living a christian lifestyle, nor do they want to. They are what they are in name only.

People who live like Christians are supposed to, those who love and don't judge and quote scripture at people like Pharisees, are outcasts from the more vocal and prominant "conservative christian culture" as well as from the liberal culture who opposes it.

If your question was rethoric, then forgive my response. As I said, this is only an opinion.

I have always found the Christian message (as I read it) opposed to the conservative and liberal extremes of our society.

I watched three w/ my wife when reality shows first became the rave; Boot Camp, Joe Millionaire, & Temptation Island. I was kind of roped in w/ the whole "you never want to watch what I want to watch" arguement, so I thought I would give it a try.

Being former military, the Boot Camp premise appealed to me until all of the drama and back stabbing started. The way the show ended really left me w/ a bad taste in my mouth, and I knew I did not want to watch another reality show.

Along comes Temptation Island, a 90210, Road Rules, and high school drama mix that my wife subjected me to when it aired. After one episode you could tell it was scripted and the actors/actresses must have been starving because they were not believable. I refused to watch it after the 2nd episode.

Joe Millionaire killed it for me. I watched I think 2 or 3 episodes w/ my wife and felt more nauseated with each minute I watched. Again one could tell this garbage was scripted and the acting was worse than I have seen in my son's elementary school plays. I could not help but feel insulted that a network would actually think this sort of swill would be entertaining to someone.

Since then I have refused to watch or even discuss a reality show. I think they are a waste of time and have nothing but contempt for a network who relies on them to bolster their ratings. Fox should really just change their name to the Reality Network.

As for Sci Fi and their Mad, Mad House I felt repulsed that one of my favorite TV networks had found it necessary to join the other networks in a search for more ratings w/ a reality program. Sci Fi channel will not be watched by my household while that drivel is on.

Just a question, arn't Christians meant to live like Jews? I mean when you really get down to it, I always understood that Jesus embraced Jewish custom fully. He was a Rabbi, part of the arguing school of Rabbis no less. (In comparison there wasn’t an arguing school of Christians till the Reformation. Even still there isn’t a strong one.)

Wow - this thread really went off topic quick :)
I'll field this one.
(I'm a computer programer by trade, so I don't get to use my degree in religion very often).

Jesus was a Rabbi (sorta), but he didn't support the Jewish lifestyle of that time (which was much different that what it is today). In fact, the Pharisees (a sect of Jewish faith in that time) put Jesus to death because they feared his popularity as a threat to their whole way of life. They found him blasphemous, and immoral.

So yes, Jesus was a Jew, but he taught a very different lifestyle than the Jewish leaders of that time.

Please keep in mind how many times I use the phrase "at that time" - I'm not antisemetic. The Jewish religion now is much different than it was 2000 years ago - as is the Christian one.

For the dilly on this (if you're really interested) go see The Passion of the Christ. It's the only film version of the story I've ever seen that wasn't campy. It's also just worth it for the visuals and music, even if you don't like the story.

I've seen it.

But my question isn't about the split, it's about the lack of carry over. At the least I'd think things like Passover should be celebrated. If I remember correctly the Christian lifestyle was only solidified after the time of Jesus, and by then there was a mostly gentile Christian population. Still it has it’s roots as a Jewish sect, one would think that all that was not directly contradicted would still hold true rather than all that is not supported being ignored.


Actually, so long as we continue this tangent in The Passion Mary Magdalen is still represented as a penitent whore saved from stoning, this is a fallacy. I don’t know the exact date but I believe the church realized and admitted this view was wrong before the Catholic/Protestant split. I know for a fact that at the least the Catholics officially denounced the view.

There is absolutely no evidence to support that she was this prostitute.

Christianity was influenced heavily by a Zorastrian off-shoot religion called "Mithranism". You can do your own research on this one - or you can email me. I actually wrote a thesis on just this topic, and can send it to you if you like - the citations may be of interest to you if you are actually interested in this historical point.

However, the point of the matter is - cultural livestyles don't really matter to the Christian Ideal. The ideal is to be a loving human being and everything that this encompasses. Christ himself rejected the status-quo (unfortunaley many of his followers today embrace it). Therefore I don't see any problem in the religion following its own path--- until it starts to contradict Christ's message. This happens all too frequently, but not due to a deviancy from Jewish beliefs.

Also - there is a Jewish sect (I've heard them called "Jews for Jesus") that worships Christ as a deity. So you kind of run the gamut.
