I posted this in my blog, but thought it worth a thread.

Why doesn’t Serenity have a cook? Who cooks for all these people? Food is an important item when you are far from civilization, and who has time to cook for 9 people? Supposedly, Kaylee does the evening meal, but is that reasonable for a ship's mechanic?

This may seem trivial (ok, it is) but I would like to see a real cook on board Serenity in the movie. You talk to any ship-board cook and they will tell you that it is a full-time job, not something that the engineer does when she has time.

Think about it - who buys food in port? Who fills up the little food boxes on the walls in Serenity's mess (so that people can eat breakfast and lunch by themselves)?

I think that Book should become the ship's cook, since he already showed some skill at it in the pilot. Otherwise, why is he still on board the ship 6 months later (when the movie takes place)?

At least Simon found a job as ships' medic to justify his presence. I think Book should too, otherwise, why would Mal would keep him onboard for so long? Right now, he is the only passenger left (and often states that he has nothing to do), and how long can that last.

Yes, I vote for Book to be ship's cook. Hey, that rhymes. Anyone else like/dislike this idea?

I think that Book earned the captian's respect early on when he helped out when help was needed. In The Message Mal tells Wash to stall the bad guys and Wash comes back with the hand puppet comment. Book steps in and takes charge. Mal might think that Book is a valuble asset on the ship so he gets to stick around. That said, I agree that it would make sence for him to have a 'job' on the ship other than 'helpful'. Cook makes perfect sence...nice work. :)

Just as Inara's position as a companion opens doors for Serenity, so does Book's position as a Shepherd.
He does a lot that we don't see. He assists everyone every day. He is their Shepherd and guide. He listens, counsels and consoles. Not to mention, he takes out an excellent kneecap.

I think it's a darn good idea--in my own mind, I've assigned Book the job of ship's steward/cook, based mostly on his original contribution in Serenity, his mention of "mystery meals" in Shindig, and the way he's seen prepping food in Jaynestown and Objects in Space.

It's fairly obvious by Shindig that he's found a way to "help" (his concern in The Train Job)and pay his way by pitching in with various ship chores--garbage, dishes, waste clean up, etc. I think a lot of these tasks go by rotation anyway--including cooking and shopping.

He also lent a hand with taking care of the cattle (as implied in Safe), and despite his more spiritual concerns in Bushwacked, he was perfectly willing to help stash the goods and stay loyal to the crew (though that may be in part to the mysterious connection/interest he seems to have concerning the Tams).

Of course, all that non-preacher-like knowledge has come in mighty handy too!

In several of my stories I have Book cast in this role, and in one still unfinished, I do have Mal acknowledge that Book is pretty much their steward/provisioner.

It will be interesting to see what status he has in the movie.

Problem with that is...Mal isnt religious so I dont think he would make a sheppard part of the crew and on payroll.

sorry...that was in responce to:

The only payroll is when they successfully pull off a job and get their split. Whoever helps gets a cut of the profits.

Other than that, Mal is the source of fundage when they're planetside. We saw Jayne using Mal's money (and trying to scarf the change) in "The Message". In "Shindig", Wash asks, "Captain, may I please have money to buy a slinky dress?".

I don't think there's an abundance of cash on anyone and mostly, Mal pays the bills. There is no 'payroll' only a fair percentage of any job.

Book would actually bring in money through services or labor.

Mal's not religious, but he's the right kind of not-religious in that he doesn't try to influence anyone else to believe what he believes. By the way, not being religious doesn't have anything to do with whether or not he believes in God. My opinion is that he still does, but he's pretty pissed at the Almighty and does what he can to spite Him is all.

Folks in need of a Shephard out in the black might go so far as to pay a nominal fee for services rendered. Ain't no pastor in the 'verse that just performs weddings for free, you know. Sometimes it comes under the title "marriage counseling" but we all know what it is right? Chances are they'd get paid in barter with foodstuffs, but I couldn't see Mal turning down a bushel basket of real tomatoes if they were offered. Point is, if there's profit in it, Mal would give it a go.

And let's consider the backwater folk in Safe for a second, shall we? They can't be the only religious nuts in the black, and just about any bible-banger would rather talk to a Shephard than a smart-mouth captain.

Don't want to forget that mysterious magic-key ident card Book has either. Opened the airlock door right quick on the Magellan when they needed it - could come in handy in the future don't you think?

Just some food for thought.

I don't think the captain would turn a paying customer (Book is a passenger) into a crew member unless there's money to be made from it. I think the crew take turns...

Zoe makes spicy caribbean and south american dishes.

Wash makes the standard american fare. Sandwiches, burgers, mac and cheese.

Jayne makes simple easy dishes that only take 5 minutes by opening cans and heating it up, or just meat and potatoes.

Kaylee is stir-fry asian style.

Mal does soups, stews and casseroles just like grandma used to do.

Simon doesn't know how, his family had a cook.

River will be revealed to be an accomplished french gourmet chef, ala jacques pepin.

And of course Book... everything has rosemary in it.

Mal is plenty religious. He's just mad at God.
