Morning Penguin, Tina & Kel!

I'm looking forward to having another small block of free time to finish it.

I knew you'd like it. I don't know one Serenifly person who doesn't like this series. And it has nothing to do with space/traditional scifi. The official classification for these types of books is "Urban Fantasy" which is fitting, but odd.

Quote:

No good deed goes unpunished - I'll recommend a book for you: I think you might like the character "Hutch" from the McDevitt books I've read. Priscilla "Hutch" Hutchins is a starship pilot. Her first appearance is in "The Engines of God" by Jack McDevitt. I've read almost all of Jack McDevitt's books.

Quote:

By the end of the twenty-second century, Earth's ravaged environment has become a time bomb ticking down to global self-destruction. Despite the fortuitous arrival of faster-than-light space travel, the search for a new home has so far located only one candidate--Quraqua, a desolate planet scheduled for terraformation within a few months. For interstellar archaeologist Richard Wald and starship pilot Priscilla Hutchins, the looming renovation threatens critical research on the enigmatic alien ruins on Quraqua and its moon, which include a bizarre false city dubbed Oz. Rousing little interest on Earth and facing an unyielding terraformation committee, Wald and his team undertake a last round of life-threatening expeditions to decipher Oz's secrets before they are swallowed forever by an emerging new world. With plenty of startling plot twists, a heavy dose of intrigue, and an unusual amount of character development for science fiction, McDevitt holds us fast right through to a thrilling finish. The yarn's less pure sf, though, than a rousing archaeological adventure transplanted to another star system.

I'm familiar with McDevitt, but have never read him.
I've put his name in my Palm Pilot "Authors to read" file so that next time I'm at B&N I'll remember. Thanks for the recommend!

I don't like the fact that EVERYTHING ends up jammed in sci-fi. Buffy? No. It's fantasy. Xena? No, again. Harry Potter? Not SCIENCE-fiction. Fantasy. Dresden - fantasy.

But I don't want to make this an argument about that. Not at all.

Heck of an idea! As dumb as it sounds I have a Tungsten C that I DON'T CARRY WITH ME. I have reasons. But now that I also have a Treo (Cell Phone and Palm combo), I should use it effectively. (But then perhaps that would seem obvious.)

I'm open to more book suggestions. Last night I got out of B&N after only $28. Previous trip was... *looks for statement*... $351. .

HUGS the ever impressive smoke free Kelkhil!!

Flyvote...oh the whole series is so lovely!!

( psst Mav have you read the most recent one? In which case we must chat!)

Oh I am so very glad HK had renters insurance...ALL of you listen if you are renting, get renters insurance. It's not terribly expensive, but it's so very very important! Like HK we found this out the hard way. Our apartment complex caught fire and we were the only ones in the whole building with renters insurance. While we were whisked away to a hotel and had all our belongings and our apartment professionally cleaned, everyone else was stuck scrambling for places to say ( many stayed in the building despite the smoke damage and the fact that the power was cut off) and had to clean their own apartments. Those who had actually lost their apartments in the fire were SOL. They just had to start over. We felt so bad for them and all. I was just stunned that no one else had renters insurance. 'Cause the building owners have insurance , but it only covers replacing the building, not any of the stuff contained within...so get insurance if you don't have it!!

They actually force us to have it at my apartment complex. Not sure why they do that though. I don't know if it actually protects the apartment owners for anything or if they're just doing it cause they know we'll wish we had it if we need it.

My son is also a book worm. He has broken the school record for the reading program points. And he still has a month to go.

I don't have renters insurance because I don't really own anything of value. The most valuable thing I own is probably my Tailored Sportsman hunt coat.

But, I do worry, especially now that a 79 year old gentleman lives next to me. I don't completely trust him to not burn our duplex to the ground because he forgot he was making a grilled cheese.

I say start simple with Sense and Sensibility.

Then Emma

Then Pride & Prejudice

Then Mansfield Park

Then Persuasion

Then Northanger Abbey

If you're doing the whole collection.

My least favorites are Northanger Abbey and Persuasion. Mansfield Park is my very favorite.

Nope, not at all. I could hardly get past the cruelty of the Bertrams. I had total sympathy for Fanny. She was always the outsider looking in at what she should aspire to be and yet she was the only one with true decency, compassion, humility, refinement and strength of character.

The offer still stands. I'd want you to go 10 days smoke free, then get some reading material. Then while you are enjoying your reading you can be thinking to yourself after turning each page "Hey - I'm reading this book because I stopped smoking." Then when you are done, the book goes on your shelf. You can look at it and always remember that that book was the first book that you earned for quitting smoking.

Offer still stands. (Not trying to be creepily persistent, but I wouldn't make this offer if I really didn't mean it.)

AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Er. *Ahem* It's as MsG said: it's not just possessions. It covers liability and property damage, should you accidently start the fire (and chances are, you will be sued if you start a fire that causes any damage). It covers the fact that you won't actually be homeless, should you be forced to vacate the apartment. And the things you own may not individually have much "value," as you say, but try replacing or cleaning absolutely all of it, and the cost adds up pretty damn fast. It's a $10/month security blanket, well worth every penny.... *looks around sheepishly...* /end lecture

As it stands now, my nearly $23K personal possessions coverage on my policy won't actually cover everything that needs covering, so I'm now scrambling to find a moving van and a storage facility to get a good portion of my schtuff out before the movers/cleaners come in to pack and clean the rest of it.

Um. Anyone else think Nitinol, materials science, and "face-centered cubic structure" when Ma said "Austenite"?

*HK is such a nerd...*

i don't think i've ever read any of Austen's work, even when it was required in skool

*speedy-ninja-stealth-hugs!*
