A bit of history I learned while watching History Channel last night ..

There was an episode of Heavy Metal concerning the Tiger tank the Germans had ...

In amongst everything there was a quick mention that there was a Firefly tank .... which was said to be a variation of the Sherman tank

I just a moment ago looked over at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherman_Firefly#Service

Quote:

The Sherman Firefly was a British variation of the Sherman tank, fitted with the more powerful British 17 pounder anti-tank gun as its main weapon.

The reason for the nickname was

Quote:

The turret had to be altered to fit such a big gun by moving the radio to a new bustle on the turret rear and by turning the long-recoiling AT gun on its side. A distinctive overhang at the back of the turret was added to give space for the recoiling weapon. The bow machine gun position was sacrificed for the storage of the longer shells.

The Fireflys were used during the 1944 invasion of Normandy hence the mention in the TV show about the Tiger tank ...

I'll leave you interested folks to research the topic on your own

I'll leave a link where you can see better pics of the tank ... http://battletanks.com/sherman_firefly.htm

heres a pic to whet an appetite or 2

BLINDOUTLAW

yeh i remeber that tank from call of duty 3, plus from the history channel. Those crazy Brits and their add ons to American armour.

Oh and speaking off Call of Duty, with the first SAS mission the two characters walk up to their gunned up jeep and the commander says,
"This is our raider, we call her Vera"
I just started laughing, hehe
