Saw Leonard Maltin Today at the Book Fair!

I had an absolute blast at the LA Times Festival of Books today!

Nothing Browncoat-y happened until I was leaving.

I was crossing one of the "streets" at UCLA, and coming the other way was Leonard Maltin.
I acknowledgingly said "Mr. Maltin" as I passed, and he smiled and said, "Hey, how ya doin'!"

Then I stopped and said, "Oh, hey!" and turned around and walked after him.

"Can I ask you some'n? Did you ever see a movie called Serenity?"

"Yeah, I did."

"And... What'd you think?"

He seemed torn, and sighed a little.

"I liked it. I think it went on a little too long, though."

"Fair enough. Did you ever see the TV series it was based on?"

"I have not." (I open my mouth to speak) "But, but I understood it. I 'got it'. And I liked it. I just think it went on a little too long."

Noddingly, I say, "Yeah, you should really watch the Firefly DVDs if you have a chance."

"Hmm, okay!"
His expression said, "There's an idea!"
Almost as if I'd just reminded him of something he'd been meaning to do, but always got sidetracked from.

Whether or not something comes of it, it always feels good to have done my duty as a Browncoat!

That is shiney, well done. I only wish I had the cohones to do that.

And long? I'll tell you what was long. LOTR Two Kings was long. It just kept going and going and going. At one point I'm like, enough already Tolkien, end the damn story. And now with the extra's it's an added half hour or more? Lord why?

Serenity was a good normal length, but Two Kings was like watching two movies with no intermission (they used to do that during the Silver Screen era)

Joss Whedon has an enviable track record as a TV writer and producer, having created Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, but his latest series, Firefly, was abruptly canceled during its first season... so Whedon recycled the concept as a feature film and promised fans that he’d tie up all the loose ends. That feature, Serenity, came to theaters several months ago and arrives on DVD today.

You don’t have to have watched the show to digest the film, as I can attest, but if you are a Firefly loyalist you’ll probably enjoy it all the more. It’s a kind of low-rent Star Wars with Nathan Fillion as a Han Solo-ish mercenary who’s inevitably forced to take sides and protect a telepathic young woman from the clutches of the evil Alliance.

Serenity is lively and fun to watch, but I wish Whedon hadn’t stretched out his story to two hours in length. It sags along the way, but it does have the loose, irreverent quality of the original Star Wars movie that’s undoubtedly a big part of its appeal. Whedon introduces the DVD on camera and provides a full-length commentary along with a variety of bonus features.
