Folks,
BBC covered the results of a poll done by SFX the previous month; and they started this poll:

http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/6517155.stm

The poll on SFX poll yielded a win for serentiy:
http://www.sfx.co.uk/page/sfx?entry=the_best_sf_movie_ever
And generated huge sales of Firefly and Serenity DVD's
http://www.sfx.co.uk/page/sfx?entry=sfx_poll_result_sends_serenity

SFX is a major SF periodical in the UK, available for sale on most newsstands. BBC... is distributed world wide; if Serenity wins here, it is possible it would yield some major PR.

It is my hope/concern that the poll will close after one month; this means the last vote day would be May 1 or May 2. So, I ask for the next few days to vote like crazy for our beloved show. We are only 960 votes out of first place...

(11:30 US ET (GMT - 5) today)
Serenity 31.60%
Star Wars 34.53%
32762 Votes Cast

With rounding, this works out to about:
10353 Serenity
11313 Star Wars
or a difference of 960. We can close this in the time available! Will you help?

Not that I haven't been voting and I loved how the article says Serenity jumped from 144 to 15 on the Amazon ranking chart but... When I look at Fireflyfans.net Amazon chart it doesn't show anything of the sort. What gives?

To paraphrase Kaylee: Whedon's Firefly is just so lush. I want to take a bite out of it all over, you know?

I'd love to come in first place and I am voting like crazy--I have my timer set to get in maximum voteage.

But even second place will warrant good PR. To beat out all those other titles behind Star Wars is no mean feat.

True; 2nd place will not be an embarassment by any means.

But 1st would be shinier!

The Amazon Chart on FFF.net is for the US Amazon I believe. The article is referring to the UK Amazon.

That happened over a matter of hours on Friday, I believe. Serenity had been making steady progress with no response from Star Wars or Blade Runner until that time.

Most of the response was from Blade Runner, with some from Star Wars. It seemed like the vote count was increasing by hundreds of votes in a matter of minutes. I assumed that the vote was coming to an end and there was a final push by Star Wars and Blade Runner to assert themselves.

I considered registering on this site to inform you Browncoats of this situation. Fortunately, by the morning, the flurry of new votes stopped and there has been steady progress made with the occasional 0.01% setback. I believe it took over three weeks to close the Star Wars gap from over 20% to about 3.5%. Star Wars and Blade Runner have shown that they can make a change of 0.5% in a matter of hours, if they are so inclined.

Was the activity before the weekend a warning or a test of their voting capability? It was too much volume in a short period of time for just a few voters without doing things such as changing IP connections. If I remember correctly this activity took place sometime between about 10 PM and 6 AM PST, so perhaps the origin was not in the United States.

So, Browncoats, if you care about this front, be vigilant.

Hail and farewell. My coat is now brown, but more of an old, faded navy blue. Never been much of a "joiner", particularly for voting. All this talk about SciFi Alliance just sounds creepy to me for some reason.

I don't know if it was a cheat gone bad, or suddenly a thousand folks decided to participate and quit. It was strange. Seen nothing like it on this poll. Votes started trailing off... boom ... then back to like it was before.

I'm also not sure what happened to my previous post; I was playing with fonts and styles and it went zocko. Perhaps someone posted while I was editting and the site merged the posts together? In any case, the site will no longer let me edit it (even though it indicates I own the post). I didn't write this and the stuff after "That happened over a matter of hours on Friday,"

Well, heck. While it was a reasonable supposition that the poll would close May 2; it is obvious it did not. BBC site does not have a "uniform" policy regarding polls (at least, I couldn't find one). It may be they intend to leave this open forever, or might yet close it(but when is anybody's guess). In any event; this thread now has a misleading title. I see two courses of action; one, we merge this effort back into the TV_vote thread, eg:
http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=28464
which is where much "vote related" activites take place; or we open a new thread with a better title... thoughts? Other ideas?

Barely 2% behind. 32.06 to 34.32

In the scheme of internet polls, this is an important one for us - Serenity Now screenings in June, SE DVD in July, sequel contracts expire in September and probably a bunch of other stuff besides. All could benefit from this - ergo, see how the DVD sales peaked on the SFX poll news.

*Mainstream* publicity is gold for our little piece of the 'verse, & you can't get much more mainstream than the BBC. Heck, if we knock Star Wars off again, we might get on the BBC news, major newspapers, a few sound bytes on movie shows and such.

Then again, we might get nuthin' - in which case what do we lose ? Nuthin'

I'm going to keep voting as I wanna see what happens when we hit the front.

Yeah Leadb, I think a new thread would be appropriate. Perhaps "Serenity closing in on Star Wars in BBC poll - *xxx behind* VOTE NOW." Update the title daily. ??

How often can you vote on this ? I've been doing it before I close any browser window or when Flyvote pops up to remind me.

*************************
Browncoats, are you content to see Firefly in 2nd place or would you rather see it at #1. It won't happen unless you vote.

Today Today's" votes based on the total from today less the total for the show reported yesterday; internally fixed point, displayed as integer. Rounding will occur.
Today% Value of "Today" / total votes for today

Summary line has three parts; the Poll reported "Total votes in the poll", the fixed phrase "Votes Cast", then a "total votes for today".
Total votes in the poll - the integer provided by the site for the total votes in the poll since inception.
Total votes for today - the summation of the various shows "Today" votes. Internally fixed point, displayed as integer. Rounding will occur.

Well Roy, I vote hourly; I believe though it only counts one a day. The problem is, it's hard to tell if a particular vote was counted. I figure if I vote when I vote for TV_vote, then I'm pretty sure to get my vote in each day.

Given I'm voting TV_vote typically 8-12 time a day, it's hard to explain only 36 votes; on the other hand, if it's only counting one a day, 36 suddenly becomes very believable.

A new thread; we can do a new thread.... tomorrow ;-) (unless someone beats me to it; feel free to just throw a pointer here, I'll follow along :-) )
