Thought for a second that maybe this should go in "Other Science Fiction Series", but then I got a look at #6...

SF Signal: The 7 Coolest Scenes In Science Fiction Film And Television

• 6. - The Mal engine kick (Firefly, 2002) - [Sorry, I couldn't get a decent pic - ed.] Perhaps the one scene in Firefly that made me decide it was definitely something worth watching more of. When faced with an unyielding foe who vows never ending vengeance, Mal did what we all would wanted him to do, what we all would want to do, he kicked the guy into the engine, thereby gaining a much more agreeable opponent who really understands the seriousness of the situation. Pure gold. With one kick, we see Mal isn't just a loser, destined to skirt the edges of the Alliance, but a person who does have a sense of right and wrong and isn't willing to put up with crap when that sense is encroached upon.

Tim - Mal is the character we really wanted Han Solo to be but never got there. He is rough but knows the difference between right and wrong. He also has very few qualms about removing somebody that may wish to come back and hurt him or those he feels are under his protection.

Scott - I don't agree with the Mal & Han comparison, but this scene is already a classic. Another scene that got a great audience reaction when seeing it live. Strangely, I've always seen Mal as very human, but with a questionable morale compass.

John - A character-defining moment. This was the first indication we had that Mal was one of the best characters in sci-fi. I'm not entirely sure I agree with the Mal's priorities (RE: Serenity...it's not OK to verbally threaten Mal but it's OK to kill Shepherd Book?) but damn, I love the character.

Whoo hoo! Love that scene! Thanks for finding this, although where in Serenity did Mal ever say it was ok to kill Book?

Yeah, I was a bit mystified by that as well.

Actually, SF Signal has a whole Firefly section in their archives...

I think he may be referring to the fact that Mal doesn't say anything along the lines of "we have to get revenge because these guys killed our friend". His other point may have to do with Mal laying down the law about his plan to head for Miranda. Anyone in the know realizes the two are connected, while Mal doesn't verbalize his anger about Book, his actions afterward reflect what he is feeling.

This is actually the scene that has *hooked* the majority of people to whom I show Firefly.

It shouldn't really be funny. I mean he's killing someone. But that "Damn" just before he delivers the kick.....priceless.

John, when did Mal say it was ok to kill Sheperd?

By letting The Operative live. And don't give me this "he was no longer a threat" nonsense. My Mal would've capped him.

But, the Operative did die, spiritually, right? His view of reality, his goals, all the things he'd worked for his entire life. Besides, too many people had already died for Miranda. At least, that's how I look at it. ::shrugs::

Skip to scene next morning where legions of black birds gather to pick up what’s left of Mal’s antagonizer the night before. This leads a new phrase created by the locals, “Crows eating Crow”.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

That was the scene that hooked me on the show.
