Ok. Right now, Firefly is suffering some bad ratings. I know we ain't getting a second Season, hell we probably won't even get a 22 episode Season; but what do you guys think our chances are for a 13 ep Season. We all know that show's can get cancelled after three episodes and how many has Firefly had?

But i seriously think we'll get a 13 episode Season. The Reason? Money! First of all we are up to Episode 7 production wise. Fox only has to pay for 4 more episodes due to the fact the original pilot 'Serenity' are episode 12 and 13. Fox is gonna wanna make as much money as they can off of 'Firefly' quick. The best way to do that, selling it to other countries, and no network is gonna buy a Five episode show. DVD sales will help and so will merchandise, Of course knowing my luck by me posting this it will be announced tommorow Cancelled.

That can't happen. I need to see this show, even if it is a Half Season. What do you guy's think of Firefly's survival rate?

Oh come on! It's been on the air for precisely two eps! One of which was delayed or pre-empted in many markets by baseball. Let's give the show a chance to find its audience before we start writing the obits.

JOSS, WHERE'S MY CHECK???!!!

I think a lot more about Firefly's chances will be known after we see how episode 3 does. Despite the low ratings, I think Fox might be inclined to be patient with it if there is an upward trend. Given Joss's reputation, there would be some reason to suspect that the show could build a decent audience as word of mouth spreads. But if the third episode loses viewers from the second, I would think the outlook would be pretty bleak.

Hard to say, but here are my pluses & minuses:

Plus
(1) Joss Whedon - talented, proven, big $$$ deal
at Fox
(2) Quality show - critics like
(3) "OK" ratings - in the demo Fox likes (18-49)
(4) Not too much competition - Providence,
Americas Funniest Videos, uh, news magazines,
uh...the WB
(5) cynical plus -As far as I can tell, not much
in the Fox hopper for midseason replacements
shows -- Andy Ricter (pretty funny, though),
Septuplets, Time Tunnel???

Minus
(1) Friday night death zone
(2) Expensive show
(3) "OK" ratings - not enough for (2)?
(4) cynical minus - Quality show - critics like

Overall, I'd say slightly more + than -, but then again, I'm an optimist.

so then, would you watch the if they reduced
cost and clipped all SFX. Better yet, while
they are at it, pare down the number of chars
and have simpler sets. The story will still
be the story, just without as much flash.

What the heck, how about just pretty much
a plain 'ol western? That would work here
would it?

I'd have to add another minus. Somebody as Fox doesn't WANT this show to succeed. It's not about money; they'd want it gone if it had great ratings and profits. How do I know? Because they were working to destroy it BEFORE the show had ever aired and demonstrated its ratings/earnings potential (or lack thereof).

Shortly before the premier, some Fox bigshots were doing some interviews to promote their new shows. There aren't very many of those, so inlcuding at least some comment on them all would have been easy enough, but they pointedly NEGLECTED Firefly. And then, somebody had to have decided to go with the pathetic advertising strategy of bad ads seldom shown.

It's sort of like Apple's strange non-marketing decision not to advertise on the Rush Limbaugh show. He'd give them a cut rate and has occasionally even been known to give them free advertising by talking about their products and leaving in them in plain view of his booth's web-cam, he's so enthusiastic about his Apples; but Apple's bigshots won't advertise on his show because avoiding being associated with a conservative is a higher priority to them than profit. That's the kind of oddity I'm talking about with Firefly; they want to find an excuse to kill the show, for some unknown reasons unrelated to the usual show-biz motivations.

I would. I watched Buffy when they had no $$$ to make the show and it certainly wasn't the (at times) laughable creatures-of-the-week that kept me watching. It was the characters, ongoing story & humor that got me hooked. I think the same thing applies to FF.

And, sure, I'd watch a Joss Whedon western, but I'd think that would be a tough genre to sell Fox or any network w/o the SF and VFX.

All and all, if you can make me care about the characters and what they're going through, it usually works for me.

How many episodes did The Tick get? 8 episodes aired. How many did Profit get? Approximately 4 episodes aired. How many episodes did Bob Patterson get? 3 or 4. How many episodes did Pasedena get? 2 or 3. What do 3 out of the four shows that are on this list have in common? With the exception of Bob Patterson all of the above were Fox show that had roughly the same ratings as Firefly. So a reasonable reading of the historical data suggests that the ax will be falling very soon.

"It looks like a great adventure...That's what it is; that's what it feels like. When I saw the pilot, it was really engaging. It was exciting. It was unusual. It threw me off every now and then. I think people will be grabbed by it." - Ron Glass, on the pilot, during an interview with the Indianapolis Star

Trends are at least as important as ratings. Push, Nevada premiered to an impressive 9.5 overnight. It's third episode got a 3.5. If the episode airing tonight is below that, it will most likely get cancelled.

If Firefly this week shows a decent gain from last week, Fox will most likely be patient to see how long the improvement will continue.
