accordin' to the blueprints FF has solar panels... but I was always under the impression they were somethin' else...
did the guys behind the blueprints take too much liberty with their imagination?
solar panels ? on a ship that can go 1% of speed of light? maybe they just look like solar panels but that doesn't mean they are....
anybody know of another source that states otherwise?

The blueprints, 10 18″x24″ full-color and insanely detailed pages, were carefully crafted by Geoffrey Mandel (graphic designer for the movie) and Tim Earls (who created the original drawings of the ship for the TV show CG models and was set designer for the movie).

I don't think these two needed to take liberties on something like solar panels.

Firefly Talk has a three-part interview with Geoff Mandel and Tim Earls, two of the guys from QMX who were responsible for the blueprints ( http://fireflytalk.libsyn.com, episodes 48, 49 and the second half of 50). I can't remember if they mentioned the solar panels or not, but it's something you could listen to. Personally, I always figured that's what they were.

Oh, those are solar panels alright!
They always kinda bugged me, especially when Serenity enters atmo.

I posted a thread about my issues with drag in the Firefly design...

I think they realized their mistake...
