Carnahan Surprised at 'Smokin' Aces' Sequel Request

Filmmaker Joe Carnahan is amazed his box-office flop Smokin' Aces became so successful as a rental DVD movie bosses now want to shoot a prequel. Crime drama Smokin' Aces slipped in and out of cinemas almost unnoticed upon its release last year - despite a cast including Ben Affleck and Andy Garcia - but became a hugely popular rental. However, although he will be involved with the film, Carnahan won't be directing the follow-up. He writes on his website: "Universal wants to move ahead with a direct-to-video prequel of Smokin' and asked me if I wanted to Godfather the thing and make sure we did a really cool story. "The DVD numbers Smokin' Aces has done are astounding and they want to strike while the iron is hot. Whatever reluctance I have is alleviated by the fact that we can really do this balls out, hardcore prequel and not be constrained by ratings or any other puritanical MPAA bulls**t. That I love. "I won't be directing. I will probably help break story - something lean and mean and nasty."

(two things about this, it either shows me terrifying space monkeys are in charge over at universal or there actually is hope of a serenity 2.) discuss amongst yourselves!

"And I think calling him that is an insult to the psychotic lowlife community."

I know, Serenity has done extremely well on DVD definitely up there with the big guns, but Smokin'Aces didn't have a huge budget or loads of CGI and big sets but then again neither did Serenity pariticly but still Serenity costed over 2x what Smokin'Aces cost. Serenity cost $39,000,000 & Smokin'Aces cost $17,000,000 & both made about the same at the Box Office but Smokin'Aces hasn't beaten Serenity in DVD sales, Serenity on DVD has sold around 1,000,000 now.

So Universal get your act together cause...
Serenity earning almost the cost of its budget at the Box Office + a humongous hit on DVD selling nearly 1,000,000 + continous strong sales of Serenity on DVD + plus a fan community almost twice the size since Serenity came out(me inculded) + a Serentiy DVD Collector's Edition = Serenity Sequel

For a film which didn't do great at the Box Office you can't get much better than this So wake up Universal

Please go to the Guerilla Marketing forum and check out Operation Signal Boost. It's a way to help get Universal's attention, and a way to help give folks things to do, to pass the Summer.

I think it needs to sell in the rejoin of 700,000+ DVDs for Universal to consider a sequel but we really all need to go for it, every Browncoat should buy at least 2 & plenty more for family & friends, ect

Cause if everybody on just ff.net bought 21 copy's each then that would be enough I think to seal the deal but seeing as we've got other forums, & people who aren't Browncoats but love Serenity and are definitly buying the Collector's Edition like my best friend AL, & you've got film buff's who will buy it, & on top of that you've got the average joe who might come across it and buy it, & then you've got press coverage in film magazine's & website's so I think its highly plausible that we can get to 700,000 DVDs sold let's say by Christmas

AND remember our Browncoat community must've grown at least twice the size since Serenity

i think the hopes of a sequel will rest on the two things the toal dvd sales including the special edition and the succes of Goners. Mary Pagent is clearly behind Joss but she needs to be able to say look the guy can bring in the numbers. I think, though I have no proof, that is the offtherecord conversation she has had with Joss. They need to have a "from the writer and director of ...", and Angel and Buffy isnt enough for movieland. I mean looking at the Sixth Sense guy that one critically acclaimed AND succesful movie has allowed him to make many more far less succesful projects in the hope of recapturing the same level of success.

I agree the serenity fan base is global now far more than universal realise, this is the plus and minus of illegal downloadng. I know loads of people who didnt watch this film when it came out but downloaded and now r fans, but they remain unregistered cause they are not a measurable statistic. before u ask i bought mine, and have the shiny metal tin version from austrailia.

sernity is akin to terminator in the 80s, that started small and grew in time.

TRAVELER

I have thought this for a long time. With the sales of the TV series DVD's doing so well to begin with and now the movie.

I was hopeful they may resume the series directly to DVD's if they could not get a network to take up the show.

A lot of sequals pass up the theater and go directly to DVD's. After all it now costs $9.00 to see a movie, here in the Milwaukee area. Then if you by popcorn and a soda you double it. So a DVD sounds awful good when you realise you own it and can watch again and again. This is of course the standard practice of Browncoats. My own DVD's will probably have to be replaced one of these days. Thank God they are not VHS. I would have replaced them twice already. So, yes, a sequel straight to DVD sounds smart to me.

Universal tune in and get a clue.

JIGMAN

Well, ah I kinda lent all of my DVD's out to friends and one day just told them to keep them as a gift, so I really HAVE to buy the SE if I want to ever see the movie again. If this sequel thing happens, it would have to happen soon though. No offense, but the actors are all getting older, and a ST:Motion Picture situation in the FF verse would just be wrong.

SLOWHAND

I know of a lot of Browncoats that never bought the Serenity DVD because they said they were waiting to see if they would release a Special Edition. So, I think that the Special Edition is gonna do well, cause I'm sure there are lots of people like that that waited to buy it. I own Serenity, but I'm definatly getting the Special Edition too!!!
