Methinks we hit the mandate, somewhere within the geekiness of the last thread ( http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=28937) so it's time for a new one.

OK hey now wait a minute...I have dibs on Rose's purple top!!! I know I'm not in the room, but I think I'm just down the hall and I am so there for the clothing fight!!! I shall bring my bestest jewelry and shoes to add to the fray...oh and my super cute floaty jacket ( which I think will look smashing on rose ) and this floaty black and white top for Magda and many other items...we are going to have entirely too much fun. We're all going to have to just get an apartment and live there...you do know that right???

Oh and a diet coke and some duck feed please. I have to go trap some ducks and move them ( they got into the enclosed courtyard that has no water and we have to move Mama and 10 baby ducklings back to the pond area so they don't die.

As for the schooling level of 'i', I can't speak for America, in Scotland it's the last year of school, but in Scotland the last year of school is pretty blurred with the first year of uni (traditional degree's tend to be a year longer) and they cover largely the same syllabus, just in more depth at Uni. Or less depth, depending on the Uni.

They may think their sins are original, but for the most part they are petty and repetitive.

*Ahem* Yes, well...
I never got to the last year of high school. I snapped, dropped out, and got my GED when I was sixteen.
As for math, I barely passed Algebra, didn't pass Geometry on the first try (got a B my second try) and forgot everything I had learned in barely passing those classes in the years that came between, as evidenced by my acuplacer tests for college, which put me a few steps below college-level algebra and didn't even try to test me on anything higher.
I have to take two math classes before I can even take the course required for my degree

Grammar(ish) question: Why do people feel the need to go all cockney when talking about herbs, or herbalism? The H is there to be pronounced aloud, not dropped like one of Badger's apple peels.

From a google search:

"The word herb, which can be pronounced with or without the (h), is one of a number of words borrowed into English from French. The (h) sound had been lost in Latin and was not pronounced in French or the other Romance languages, which are descended from Latin, although it was retained in the spelling of some words. In both Old and Middle English, however, h was generally pronounced, as in the native English words happy and hot. Through the influence of spelling, then, the h came to be pronounced in most words borrowed from French, such as haste and hostel. In a few other words borrowed from French the h has remained silent, as in honor, honest, hour, and heir. And in another small group of French loan words, including herb, humble, human, and humor, the h may or may not be pronounced depending on the dialect of English. In British English, herb and its derivatives, such as herbaceous, herbal, herbicide, and herbivore, are pronounced with h. In American English, herb and herbal are more often pronounced without the h, while the opposite is true of herbaceous, herbicide, and herbivore, which are more often pronounced with the h."

Funny, I wince when it IS pronounced

Same way I wince a little when people say "acrosst". Really, what is up with that? And "warsh". Where do these extra sounds come from???

People axing me a question always irks me. I like to make some kind of remark about chopping down trees and completely ignore what they axed me.

I think folks are just lazy, and the language suffers for it.

hehehehehe:

Now I just wanna talk quickly about language, and then we can all go. Yeah, language. They do say Britain and America are two countries separated by the Atlantic Ocean, and it’s true. No, they say, “two countries separated by a common language,” that’s the line; it’s an Oscar Wilde line, I think. And we do pronounce things in a different way, like you say “caterpillar” and we say “caterpillar,” and… You say “aluminum” and we say “aluminium.” You say, “centrifugal” and we say “centrifugal.” You say, “leisure” and we say “lizuray.” You say “baysil” and we say “bahsil.” You say “’erbs” and we say “herbs,” because there’s a f*cking “H” in it... But you spell through THRU, and I’m with you on that, ‘cause we spell it “THRUFF,” and that’s trying to cheat at Scrabble.
“How can we get that “OU” sound?”
“Well, a “U” will work,”
“What about an “O” as well?”
“We don’t need it, we’re fine.”
“No, I think an “O” in.”
“Well, all right.”
“And a “G” as well.”
“What?!”
“Yes, a “G” would be good. We need a silent “G” in the background, in case of any accidents or something.”
“Well, all right.”
“And an “H” as well.”
“F*cking ‘ell! Hang on.”
“An “H” in case some herbs come along.”
“All right…”
“And a P, and a Q, and a Z(ed) ... Look it’s a word in Scrabble that’s 480 points!”

No, not entirely and no, not entirely.
My family got a lot happier once I turned 21 and my dad no longer felt any obligation to try to 'raise me' which he'd fought with a lot. That eased a lot of the tension. I had also made the choice several years previous that I was going to have minimal contact with his side of the family, which also helped. A lot of lingering financial tension when it comes to my mom has been eased lately (which is odd, as I'm not working right now) and the issues we had when I was a teenager eased because, well, I'm not a teenager anymore. I can admit that.
But it would be dumb of me to say there's never a clash and never a problem. It will get better as you get older, though. My theory is that, since the issue of who needs to control who fades away, a lot of tension fades with it.

Hehehehe, the one that really got me the first time I saw it was 'loured' (for those Americans like me who are totally confused, it's how they spell 'lowered')
There's also a thread somewhere (I think Blue Sun Forum) where the different meanings/usages of words like 'suspenders', 'braces', 'quite', 'fanny', 'thongs' etc are discussed

Well it can be confusing....fanny in America means bum and it most certainly does NOT mean that in the UK which can land you in some conversationally awkward spots...eg she landed on her fanny.

NVG - Good to see you. It's been a while. Why not have one of everything? You'll only get a virtual hangover.

Kelkhil - Bananas? Does this mean we have no Bananas today? Sorry... couldn't help myself.
