So I've been in the habit lately of going to my local Borders and moving all of the Firefly DVD's from the bottom shelf up to the top (they had it stuck between Felicity and Friends, ick).
Except I can't anymore because they now put all of their DVD sets behind a locked glass case. Why would they do that? It's not like they're easier to steal than any other DVD.
Anyone else finding troubles with their guerrila marketing tactics?

I imagine that box sets tend to be worth more than most standard movie DVDs and are therefore more likely to be stolen.

America loves a winner!

You mean you've actually SEEN Firefly DVD's in retail stores ? Wow! Everytime I go to check up on 'em, they're no where to be found. What other stores do you find them in, besides Borders ?

They don't like it when you shoot at 'em.

Bummer about the glass cases. Haven't encountered that obstacle before, and I've done a fair bit of pro bono display modification work for my local DVD retailers. I suppose it's an understandable security measure for these typically rather pricey box sets, if the place can't afford a security tag and sensor arrangement. But a vexation just the same.

Might I recommend that you print up a copy or twenty of the DVD tag over at serenitymovie.net (downloads). Such a thing could be taped to the outside of a glass case, and so direct people's attention to the pretties within.

Keep flyin'!

Hah! That's kind of funny -- I've done the same thing, and almost mentioned it dozens of times!

Wal-Mart usually has them on the bottom shelf in a little stack; I spread 'em out on the top shelf. My wife -- a big fan of the show -- normally disapproves of my boyish urges, but she's willing to look the other way for my little act of product-placement sabotage.

Don't squat with your spurs on.

Maybe they moved them because someone kept messing with the display.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

One problem w/ moving the DVDs: if they are out of alphabetical order, people may think the store is out & leave. If Borders has it between Felicity & Friends, it is because it is in alphabetical order.

Personally, I leave one in the alphabetical order on the shelf and put several up at eye level. I usually face them out so they are easier to see.

Also, if I see anyone looking at Sci Fi in the DVD section, I will strike up a conversation and suggest Firefly to them.

To stop people messing up their carefully arranged alphabetical displays?

I'm surprised that they were out in the shelves in the first place. All of the Borders that I've been to have boxed sets in the glass case.

Annoying when they have no one working in that secion, and you want to buy something from the case, and they have to call a manager over to open the case 'cause they only have ONE FREAKIN' KEY to the case.

Sorry, venting. The above happened a year or two back when I decided to pick up Band of Brothers as a gift, and it took about 15 minutes to get my hands on the bloody thing.....
