Inccubus, that definitely describes me (well, the energy feeding part, not the traditional physical traits that are associated with them). I am a sadist as well.

There are two men standing at the junction and both know the correct road. One man always lies, and the other man always tells the truth, but you do not know who is the liar and who is the one who tells the truth. You can only ask each man one question, but it must be the same question for both. What is the question that would allow you to get the information necessary to choose the correct path?

Answered by PR: The question that needs to be asked is, I think, "If I were to ask if this road leads to where I want to go, would you tell me 'yes'?"

Response by RIMG: The answer I had was similar, ask each one how the other would respond.

*blink, blink*
Um. Asking each man about their own path wouldn't provide for the logical conclusion that asking about how their counter-part would respond provides; regardless of which man is on which road, their answers will be the same and no conclusion can be drawn. You need to elicit a different response from each in order to reason through the scenarios.

However, instead of sorting through all the IFs, THENs, and THEREFOREs, my question would be this:

"Can I borrow your f**king map?"

Unless I am way off (which is entirely possible), Rose's answer works out too (I did it in my head for 10 minutes trying to make it wrong, and couldn't). If both men tell you opposite paths, there is no way of knowing who is the liar and the truth-teller and which path to take. Asking the liar a question is like multiplying by -1, but she imbedded a question within a question, cancelling it out. Asking the truth teller is like multiplying by 1 (if that makes any sense at all). I do like your solution, though, ask for the f*cking map.

Logic is like math without numbers.

Gee, if you say you worked out the problem, I believe you.

Ok, well assume it's true:

1 = 0.99999 ...

Then multiply by 100:

100 = 99.99999

subtracting, we get:

100 = 99.99999
- 1 = 0.99999
--------------
99 = 99.0

Which reduces to 1 = 1, so it must be true.

The "proof" of 1=2 is fun too.

Can you find the fallacious step? :

Step 1: Let a = b.

Step 2: Then a2 = ab,

Step 3: a2 + a2 = a2 + ab,

Step 4: 2a2 = a2 + ab,

Step 5: 2a2 - 2ab = a2 + ab - 2ab,

Step 6: and 2a2 - 2ab = a2 - ab.

Step 7: This can be written as 2(a2 - ab) = 1(a2 - ab),

Step 8: and cancelling the (a2 - ab) from both sides gives 2 = 1.

Anyone's brain go 'splodey yet?

see this is why I hated pure maths as you can't apply it to something and so whilst you say that and it makes perfect sense, I don't see it until someone points it out.

I'm not sure how 1(a2-ab) is different to a2-ab and you don't need it to council it out on both sides or do you, argh, see this is why I did lousy at a level maths, too much of this and not enough mechanics modules (physics).

I maintain step 6 is a poo head however

mornin' Fly. LOL

Gee - I am with you, the stuff needs actual application (it's why I am an engineer and not a mathematician). I still maintain that step 6 is just combining two like terms left from step 5, and the reason for the 1(a2 - ab) in step 7 is to show the cancellation, just so you can be sure to understand the flow. To find the fallacious one, look at what is done between the steps to get to the next one instead of the steps themselves, then ask yourself if that is a valid mathematical operation.

lol, I think we might have scared the others away!

I agreed with you on step 6 from teh moment you wrote it and was just being difficult because I wanted too about it being a poo head.

The step 7 query is again me being difficult, stems from an arguement with my maths teacher as I saw a lot of this as showing off with numbers rather than something practical that could be applied to real numbers and whilst I enjoy this stuff to a point, I like to be able fit it into an application.

So my theory is step 5 is fallacious for introducing random subtrations for no apparent theory.

Enough of the maths (let me know by pm as I still want to know!), let see if we can entice the others back, anyone want to throw a ball round in the beer garden, or mayber some skinny dipping in the river?

I'll just post and be done with it, in case any lurkers care about it. The final step is fallacious, as you remove (a2 - ab) from both sides, but from Step 2 it can be seen that it equals zero. Basically the proof says 2x0 = 1x0, then it divides out the zeros, which is impossible, because you cannot divide by zero.

OK this is Mr. Jensen whom you all so generously emailed. He wanted to reply
Here it is.

Hello my Fire Fly friends.

I have now finished my investigation of the Fire Fly content and have come to some very concrete conclusions. I will get to them at some point, but in reading this thread, I hope you do not mind, I can understand why you discuss such random things.... YOUR SHOW HAS BEEN CANCELED!! You are out of things to discuss about Mel, Wash, Jane... Even my favorite character, Saffron. They are in effect dead *traces cross over heart in memory of Wash*...

MSG here has turned to discussing episodes that have never even been made and I catch her trying to slip in facts about Fire FLy that only exsist in her head. I origanally belived that there were 27 episodes and now after my research, I realize there are only 13. You should ask MSG to share with you her imaginary 14 episodes. They are rather fantastic.

Ok back to my study of the Fire FLy phenomenon... It is truely a well made series. The episode lost in space felt very Stanely Kubric with the director letting us feel River's experience as she walked around Serenity. She would observe a conversation and in that, we would see the thoughts jump out of the people who she was observing as she was reading their thoughts. Fire Fly is a well done producion.

So this brings me to the question that I can not solve... There are many great series... Star Trek, Star Gate/Atlantas, and many others... I still do not understand this... Why do people still worship this canceled series?

I mean I really enjoyed the shows and may even concider it one of the best Sci Fi series I have seen on TV, but what do you expect will happen from here.

Are you all making up pretend episodes like MSG here?

Do you really want to see older vesions of your favorite characters running around with canes and missing teeth?

Where does it go from here...?

I truly wish you the best, but I worry for the sanity of my dear friend MSG. She really needs to let go...

/thoughts

OK it's me again and yes he's crazy...love you guys

No, actually, it doesn't. You trick a 'truthful' answer out of the liar with a double question. I doesn't matter if you know which one is the liar or not, they will both give you a truthful answer to that question, and you'll then know which road to take.
Okay, so say road A is the right way and road B is the wrong way. You ask person A "If I asked you if this road led to such and such, would you tell me yes?" and, whether it's the lair or the truth-tell, he will say "Yes." You ask person B "If I asked you if this road led to such and such, would you tell me yes?" and again, whether it's the liar or the truth tell, he will say "No." The question tricks the liar so you don't have to work out which is which.

Good morning folks. It's yet another cold, miserable day outside (which means my walk to the gym can be counted as the initial cardio session).

I haven't been on much lately because our house got invaded by ants, who conspired with the weather to turn the mortar holding a brick wall together, into sand. As a result, part of the house looks like it's ready to collapse outwards with minimal provocation. Given that it's now winter, and we get strong winds more often than PirateNews posts in RWED, we may have a pile of rubble land on the hot water service any day now.
