There were heroes in the past who didn't use violent acts to accomplish their goals. (Insert ultra sarcastic smiley emote thingy here)

All I know is that I would love not having the option to use violence. And in recent years it feels really good to understand and employ non violent methods of crisis intervention. But realistically there is no chance of us ever seeing that wonderful place in our lifetimes. Human nature simply will not allow it.

As for the bastards who are big and violent in the name of macho posturing, I'd love to break them down physically with my own two hands. That seems to be the only language folks like that understand. But from experience I can honestly say that having the ability to influence a macho type without beating or breaking them is incredible.

The best gunfight you can get into is the one that doesn't happen.

ADD: Sorry I missed the good morning to everyone. I looked back and had to wipe tears away from the "phone conversation" post from HK. Still trying to lower the smile a bit.

Or better yet, you want an ideal? How about stoicism? How come the general populace feels obligated to associate death with tragedy? I think it's out of selfishness, personally. Maybe if we as a people started accepting certain inevitabilities of life as part of the cycle, learning how to COPE with them and not trying to avoid and cower from them completley, we'd attain a better grasp the reality that we live in.

We will always have indevidual desires and aspirations, and there will always be those of us that are willing to break rules in order to get ahead. It could be worse. Lord knows I'd really be hating life if the world were run by hippie (no offense to DTH)liberal hypocrites. What burns my ass is those folks who preach non-violence but insist on verbally attacking people with a different or opposing view. Even worse they find a non violent, non confrontational (read as pussy) avenues for their vengeance.

I love people who sue. Gives extra targets when their lawyers show up.

In all seriousness, people need to face the truth of life. You're born, stuff happens, pain hurts, pleasure is nice, there will be people that love and hate you for no reason, then you die. Some are not lucky enough to experience those things and others are lucky enough to avoid a few of them. But there is always a beginning and an end.

I have no issue with folks using whatever means necessary to protect their own. I don't think violence should be the first option in any disagreement. I don't know if a noble death is better than a cowardly life but I would like to think so. Likewise it seems that a noble life is better than a cowardly death. Only those who have actually died can answer that. I conjure a noble life trumps a cowardly one every time.

That said, every war in every age has always been about men too old to fight deciding to send men too young to decide to fight for them. "Where does that get fun?" It isn't Chess and it isn't Risk and it isn't Stratego or Battleship. It certainly isn't Life. And it's not a Monopoly.

I am grateful for everyone of you who has stood up and done your part for us back home. I am proud that we have people such as you ready to defend us. I'll will never and can never know what you've given up, what you've had to do, for us to continue on here in our various lifestyles. I just don't have those same feelings for the people who have sent you into the dust while they sit in the air-conditioned rooms deciding what losses are acceptable.

None are acceptable.

Some, unfortunately, are inevitable. I am glad you are all still with us.

Zeek, I have to agree with you on Nathan's super secret project thing, to some extent. I closed it after a few minutes. Just way, way too artsy for me. I like the message (and I love the messenger!), but it seemed like idealism for idealism's sake. There are artists and filmmakers out there who seem to think that it's enough to put the message in their art, and then just stand back and wait for the world to change. Good for you for speaking the message at all, but that's really not enough. Get involved in a charity that promotes the message. Give scholarships to young people who personify the message. Hell, put the message on a tshirt so that people can wear the message. But don't expect us to view your oh-so-post-modern art and be fundamentally changed as human beings. It doesn't work that way. To change the real world you have to act in the real world.

I'm all for new definitions of heroism, and new definitions of masculinity. The men in my family have always valued intelligence over strength, compassion over competition. Sure, as a family we suck at team sports, but I know that I could call my father or any of my brothers in the middle of the night crying, and they would not only take the call, but they would talk me through whatever crisis had prompted the call. I have a very close relationship with my dad now because he has talked me through crisises in the past. I love their compassion, their sensitivity, their loyalty, and their humor. I wouldn't trade that for anything.

My brothers learned all that from my father, and my father and uncles learned from their father. I think that's where this sort of movement needs to start: in the home, not in art.

Well I'd like to weigh in all profoundly, but sadly what I have is this...
I'm glad Nathan, in particular, and people in general always strive to become a better, more peaceful society. The problem with utopia is the same problem as communism. It doesn't take into account several millennia of evolution and instinct and the basic underlying fact that many people are just no damn good. Until every child is raised with love, support, and an environment that nourishes them physically, mentally, and emotionally and no child experiences any form of deprivation or unkind treatment or disparity between their needs and what they receive, we will never be able to prevent violent behavior, anger, or anything else. As long as this violence exists, we will need a response which defuses this. Sometimes this can be done verbally, but sometimes, it just has to be stopped physically. So frankly, the human race is simply not equipped , at this point in our evolution, to not be violent. Nice that we keep trying though:)

Edit- I would point out that stoicism is a failure for the same reason. Erase all emotion and you erase all humanity. If you don't love your child, you don't provide for it and everything decays into nothing.

Okay, I suck. I have time for movies but not for books. I'm re-reading Tom Clancys Without Remorse seein' as I read it in haste the last time with the wish to move on to Rainbow Six. Anyhoo I saw Children of Men with Clive Owen. The flick is a bit gut wrenching in terms of plot devices. Naturally there was a book before there was a movie that I haven't and probably never will read.

To the point. Theo, the main character, endures alot of abuse and witnesses some pretty horrific things. Watching the movie I picked out no less than four instances where he could have reacted violenty. As easily as it came to me in finding those openings I thought that maybe there is someone with a completely opposite view. I've found myself unknowingly looking for the options instead of the violence that ensues in of all things movies. I found Theo to be one of the most heroic characters I've ever seen in a piece of fiction. Not really making a point. Just stating an observation.

Jonny - There's been plenty of leaders in the past who went to war with their men. Alexander the Great comes to mind most immediately. It's a reason I think that having military experience should be mandatory for all potential presidential candidates.

MSG - First off, let me define being stoic as not portraying emotion. That said, I didn't intend on suggesting pure stoicism as a value above all else, only that it has it's place. I cannot fathom why being able to maintain composure in the face of adversity could ever be misconstrued as negative in any way. It should not only be a base ideal for masculinity, but for humanity as a whole.

I think the entire idea that heroism and masculinity need to be "updated" is based on a POMPUS assumption that we enlightened individuals are somehow ready to move on from our primitive connections. BOO-SHIT. Is anyone familiar with the so called "Age of Enlightenment" in Europe? They spattered the exact same type of gibberish, having the gull just like this guy to think that they can change human nature.

Did our lovely Captain not say similar things about the Alliance towards the end of Serenity?

Look, I'm not saying that men shouldn't be able to connect emotionally. I've held my brothers-in-arms while they cried. I've re-assured my mother. I've had battle buddies look after me when I couldn't handle it anymore. NVG, back me up here, you know how emotional soldiers can get. But we don't need to take it to the extent that we're doing it all publicly. Behind closed doors is fine, and in my opinion, preferable.
