I need advice. I am working on a Alliance inspired Operative Costume.I have a prototype( see the pic in my sig) already but was wondering several aspects

1. What would be the motivation of an Operative? Would it be money?Sport?Justice.

2. What what he/she wear or accesorize with?Would it be practical?uniformlike?

- I have some ideas but Wikipedia, the RPG book and word of mouth are giving me several diffrent ideas.

Oh and the The 76th Independent Battalion-couldn't be bothered because they are busy with thier own costumes

Why do i wanna be a bad guy? Well for one Whats more fun playing a Jedi or Boba Fett. I mean not everyone could have been at Serenity Valley, not everyone could have been on the losing side-why not bring some balance..Also the Operative in the movie was far scarier (using a warped sense of Justice and Morality to justify his actions) then any monster.

So does anyone have any advice especially
Costume-wise?

You asked a question and didn't even wait a day, and besides, our costumes are already done.

As for inspiration, I would say that the Operatives are some of the most base people there are, possibly a sadist, to actually get enjoyment out of work, and possibly even a bit brainwashed to be able to follow orders blindly. Money, power, and fame wouldn't enter into it, because if they had wanted that, they would have been bounty hunters or contract killers or something.

I cannot see your sig pic, nor do I have the RPG book, so everything that I am basing my arguements off of is from the BDM. It would seem that the accessories would be practical, and nothing more than what they need to get the job done (why carry 5 knives when you use the same one all the time?). They would keep it very simple, so there wasn't anything distracting them from getting the job done.

My $0.02. Hope it helped.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

The Operative, as we saw him, was consumed with honor. He was part ninja and part samurai. He was cold, nearly emotionless (even when he was angry his voice was calm, which is the scariest kind of anger, so it works well) and his main weapon was a sword. Discipline, control, belief. High quality weapons without too much flash. Nothing all that striking about him. Simple, drab, high-quality clothes. Simple, drab, calm expression. Average looking (aside from being fit as hell) a chameleon who could vanish into a crowd. One sword, one small gun, some serious combat training. End of story.

And BTW, I would wanna be a Jedi

I like her the way she is now, especially her coat is now a grey/silver instead of brown since she's Alliance though you need to stick her Katana on her back like a Ninja like PhoennixRose said the Operative was part Ninja part Samurai or maybe just trash her current look and go for a Pirate-Ninja look

A huge improvement over your last pic of Scorpion

None of the above. It's a vocation. Think Nikita, Bond, agents. It is simply what they do. There are no moral issues for them, at least not job-wise, because they are given a task and they complete it. An Operative is good at her/his job. Takes pride in what s/he does: clean, efficient, dedicated.

They have emotions. They feel. They just don't apply feelings to the work. Lots of folks do that. I don't think Operatives are brainwashed either. They are intelligent, skilled, and deadly if needed. Operatives are not sadists. An Operative does not get joy from causing pain. They take pleasure in a job well done. They believe things must be done and they may be the only ones capable of doing them. Belief. Strength.

That's how I see Operatives.

Practical, yes. Simple. Comfortable. Perhaps even a little stylish but not overstated or garish. Neutrals or darks. They don't stand out in a crowd at first glance. Once you lock eyes with one, you feel unease.

Perhaps glasses on occasion. Good shoes/boots for lots of walking, comfort, and stealth. Not many accessories because they don't want to draw unnecessary attention. Perhaps a favorite weapon. For a particular mission, one would dress or arm appropriately.

Have fun.

Important people don't do field work.

Glasses...yeah. The script refers to him sporting reading glasses. Then again, The Operative in the script was very different from the one in the movie. He seemed to be an older man, to me.

And, didn't Chiewetel sport some glasses on the bridge?

Badass with glasses...He, Hiro, and Clark Kent should form a softball league or something.

I thought about this yesterday as well:

Not sure if you plan to make the costume for a Con or just to wear around the house, but you might want some kind of small Alliance markings visible on the front of the outfit, so that some people might actually get what you are.

Sorry to nitpick (but I feel the need to display true geekishness). The gun was only picked up off a dead trooper when he was abandoning the ship during the big space battle. So while his only weapon he normally carried was the sword, he (or any operative, regardless of gender) would be well-trained with all weapons (standard and improvised).

As Book says, they're more liable to "sidle up to you and smile" then come charging towards you weapons drawn. Thus reinforcing the points made by previous posters about them blending into a crowd, rather than having any flashy outfits.

Following that line of thought, an acceptable costume would be comfy clothes that don't impede movement.

My impression is that the Operative's body is his weapon. He only bothers with a sword when he needs something pointy, but it's a tool, nothing more.

Puttin' together my own Alliance costume for CSTS.

Combat trooper on the city ship IAV Dortmunder (seen in the Serenity TV pilot.)
aka "Purple Belly".

[

The hat is a modified Confederate sailor's hat, the helmet and armor are, of course, Starship Troopers pieces waiting to be accented in purple and the pin and patches are a little bit of mix and match between the series, the BDM and my input. The gun is a piece I made for another project, but it will serve as a fill-in so I can have the costume ready for the Can't-Stop-The-Serenity showing in Philly.

I’ve thought about this too…dunno. It would be great for folks to recognize the costume and the universe, but I don’t imagine Ops wearing identifying markings. A cool ass ID badge or something, maybe. This is a tricky one. I’m not sure which way I’d go if it were me.

You’re on the path to a nice costume. Well done!

I think you’re both filling a void that needs filling. Thank you for being willing to work for the establishment.

Make sure to post a picture in the BSR of you in costume at the event so we can all marvel at the handiwork.

Was Jubal an operative? i thought he was a mercenary/bounty hunter.

A uniform is usually a garment, or set of garments, worn by more than one person to denote their function/employer/allegience (that sort of thing) unless all operatives wore the same clothes as The Operative or Jubal, its not a uniform.

Which actually made me realise that an operative would never ever wear a uniform because why go to the trouble of removing yourself from the history books then going around distinguishing yourself with your outfit?

So civillian dress - anything goes!

Which makes me wonder if someone hasn't already covered this up there and i missed it - sorry!

I never thought of it quite like that, but i always thought that they didn't actually have a 'title' anyway - like they don't have a name or rank or anything like that. Its not like bright but emotionally devoid young things can get packed off to operative school. So maybe operative is just a euphemism - a name given to something with no name, just for ease of talking about them.

Which, in an evening of wondering, makes me wonder what they put on their wage slips...

Sorry to pour on the cheese, but Dr. Mathias also reffered to him as an 'Operative' as did the credits.

And Jubal Early wasn't an Operative, I don't think, though I think the characters are similar. I can see how the concept of Early evolved into the Operative in Joss's mind, but Early was a bounty hunter. A smart, intuitive, sadistic, scary bounty hunter with some obvious combat training, but a bounty hunter. I don't think he would have had the mental stability that the Operative program (whoever it may be run by) would desire.

Also, our movie Operative had no name.

As far as the credits go, they had to call him something, and XXXX was already taken With regards to Dr. Mathias, what's to say the euphemism isn't a common one? Not much point using them if no-one understands what you mean, Although I know people who don't let it stop them from using the most incredibly obscure euphemisms...

Yup, Jubal was a bounty hunter, through dint of hunting bounty, having a name and being three fruits short of a basket.

Oh, and he was a Confederate Civil War General, and a 'Handyman' played by Pat Morito in Inferno - I wonder if Joss knew?

But hey, who cares.

What I was actually back here for was the fact that i've been toying with recreating The Operative's costume for a while now - I mean some of it is buyable, but his pants and jacket are of a very interesting construction (sorry I did a costume construction degree and I tend now to watch seamlines and hair do's instead of movies!) and I always thought it would be fun.

Whats stopping me however is the fact that it would look terrible on me,I'd never wear it so i'm unwilling to fork out for the materials. So if someone out there would like an operative costume, i'd be happy to do it for them.
I could do it for pennies or the family fortune, quality of fabric variable of course, but if anyone is interested, pm me.

And by the way the Purplebelly costume is stunning - I really wish I had that kind of expertise with non-fabric materials. Its brilliant.

The hat is finished! I'm no seamstress (esp. what with being a guy and all) but it'll hold together. If you look at the pic of the two officers from "Bushwacked" you can see the hat I was doing. I can't get the little emblem pin so I painted my LEIASKY pin to the more subdued TV series look. I think Geoff Mandel's designs were beautiful, but I interpret the Alliance as the ultimate nanny state. So while things may be all shiny for the rich, I see the beauracracy and the life of the "commoners" as very gray. The soldiers would tend to be rather cookie-cutter not individualistic or "independent". "We're making a better world; all of them, better worlds."

Please don't take this as a personal attack, but I despised the "upgraded" costumes, including the Alliance, in BDM Serenity. Mal's Browncoat got some rubberized doo-hickey on it, Simon looked like an escapee from Star Trek, the suits had lapels (Shawna Trpic made a clever and bold fashion statement in eliminating the lapels and collars from men's dress suits in Firefly) and the Alliance Troopers looked like Chrome-plated Motocross riders! Their body armor looked klunky and contrived, much like Captain America in the Schwartzenegger flick, "Running Man". The armor and weapons of the Alliance were chrome plated; might as well put a big glowing sign on your chest saying "shoot here!". The Starship Trooper uniforms at leastLOOKED like combat uniforms, even if they were lifted from another property.

The Firefly troops looked like real, gritty, combat troops.

The uniforms went from the arch, militaristic gray of Firefly to bright purple dance club clothes with, so help me, huge pieces of bling on the hats! Simon's River-breakout uniform didn't bother me cuz he was supposed to be a higher up big-shot; but the bright colored bling-clothes were inexcuseable on the average troops. Mercifully, most of the scenes featuring these purple abominations were massively cut.
(The rescue team at Lilac, the hand grenade scene, and a lot of the on-board Alliance ship stuff.)

Bottom line is, only Inara, Jayne, Kaylee, River and the Operative looked right in this movie. The rest had there looks removed from their Firefly roots to look less western and more sci-fi to appeal to a broader "mundane" audience. That audience didn't show anyway, so I feel our beloved characters' look was needlessly compromised. And that includes the all business, rather detached, fish-out-of-water-on-the-Rim Alliance troops and officers.

Thanks For Listening, rant mode OFF.

I agree! I loved the costumes in the show more then the movie, hence the reason why i am going with the concept outfit as based on the officer from "Bushwacked"

The funny thing is, the Operative did come off as belonging more on the show, because of the subtlety of his clothes and uniform.

And I did like Simon's uniform as representing a nearly Parliment level inspector. Think Russian Generals and troops. The Russian generals had the flashiest, showiest uniforms while the common soldiers had uniforms that bordered on crude in the "Peoples Proletariet Army"!

I also had a problem with Wooley looking Jayne but that is neithe rhere nor there... I got a BDM so i am happy about that.

I really REALLY liked/hated/feared the Operative character- So simple and yet so dangerous. And would have been devistating if on the show

Just a bump to put this back in view for the Purplebellies Under-represented thread.
I thought there was a lot of good info and discussion, here.

Also, I'll add some updated uniform pics tonight/tomorrow morning.

I remembered this thread because I just got my second (partial) SST Purplebelly outfit.

I have an "A" grade helmet that needs finishing and the shoulder and stomach pieces of armor.
Now I need to find or cast a back piece.

But oddly enough, my biggest challenge is that I CANNOT find the right color purple in a spray can!
I have this horrible feeling I'm going to have to try having Lowes or Home Depot mix up a batch of paint to my cloth color sample and then airbrush it on.

Have you checked hobby stores? There's quite a variety in model paint. It also works well on styrene (assuming you're using a plastic of some kind). Model paint, not craft paint. I don't know how craft paint would hold up long term on armor.

Yeah, well, guess what.
In re-watching the show, every time I saw the Feds in SST armor, the color looked almost lavander.
So the heck with it, I'm using lavender.
I'll post pics soon, here and at my main collection thread

In the meanwhile another project done; my Simon baton.

I finally got around to finishing my Simon Tam baton.
I started with 800 grit paper from the automotive store and sanded lightly along the length of it to knock the high points off.
Only a few times with the 800.
I then did the same thing with the 1000 grit.
But I purposely did NOT remove the turning marks completely gone.
I then used the rubbing compound; first end to end, then around the diameter.
Last, I used the cleaner wax only going around the diameter, never end-to-end.

and, WOW! The faint turning marks under the deep polish make it look like turned, anodized aluminum rather than a simple piece of shiny plastic!

I cleaned up the Alliance hawk using the usual assortment of knives, files, sanding sticks, sand paper and some automotive bondo to fill in a couple of low spots.
I then glued in the rings and painted it with bumper chrome (tho' I masked off the rings to keep the original stainless steel finish.

I drilled and tapped mine so that it screws together, but epoxy would work just fine, I'm sure.

All in all, this is a satisfying project that turned out as good or better than I hoped it would.

And some of the elements that will go into my River Breakout Display:
(The graphic is the screen-used piece held by Dr. Mathias, the pins and pistol are fan-made replicas, both of excellent quality.)
Needless to say, Simon's baton will be a major draw!
