Hey, think of it this way guys. People from older generations got to have a lot of experiences we never will. My mom tlaks all the time about traveling to California on Route 66, or dressing up like a hippie and walking on Haight and Ashbury when she was little. Newer generations miss out on that type of thing.

I've a question that's always plagued me, so I thought I'd pose it to all y'all.

Why are people so secretive about their income?

I mean, sure, you don't want your employees telling everyone what they make, cuz then you'd inevitably have people complaining and whining about "fair" and blah-dee-blah. But, outside of the company... are people embarassed about their salary? Are they ashamed of it? Do they feel guilty about making too much? Or do they feel that if their salary is too low comparatively, that they'll seem like a failure? Should I be ashamed or embarassed about how much I make and I just don't realize it? Why's it always seem like such a taboo thing to discuss openly?

Well 'cause it's rude to talk of money. You never know if someone else is in terrible financial straits or something and if you're over there talking about your big raise and how you make $150,000 a year it could be upsetting...basically I think it became a rule so as not to emphasize class/wealth differences among people.

It's not necessarily the nicest thing to go around randomly proclaiming your income to strangers. (E.g. our c**ksucker COO was in the front lobby at our previous building on his phone, as people were walking by, and he was telling whomever to give all the directors a $30,000 / yr raise... and that was, naturally, after they just got done telling us that our bonuses would be tiered from now on, meaning we'd be getting a significantly smaller bonus and the managers and directors would be getting a significantly bigger bonus.)

But when people ask... when they're trying to get an idea of the job market... etc. ... why all the dancing around the answer?

Maybe I'm just stupid.

Hmmm, I'm not sure, but I think it's because it's personal information. Good morning folks.

(Plops down in thread, very glad to be home)

Spent 1st day of ICWA (Indian Child Welfare Act) symposium fighting the nods and the second day taking notes and considering presenting some policy to council for sponsorship of non member children with member siblings and policy items for tribal enforcement of custom/culture for the same children. Lots of ultra fun rollercoaster loopty loop stuff that really is not that fun but still loopy nonetheless.

Income HK? With us it's just good policy. I don't make much more than the people I supervise. They think I get paid "The big bucks" but it ain't true. Hell, now that I'm paid salary there is no overtime and I get reimbursed with more leave time. More leave time and the load of two jobs. More leave time and too much stuff to do leaving me with little time off. More leave time and crappy pay that won't allow me two weeks to tour the country meeting Browncoats on the road to D*C.

F-it. I love my job and the people I work with and for. Despite the fact I only make just over twelve dollars an hour.

If that ain't a self imposed punch in the junk than I don't know what is.

Hmmm I make a pitiful sum, but I'd happily tell you if you wanted to know:)

NV- I feel your salaried employee pain..I'm in the same boat. We actually figured out that based on the number of hours I work I make about $8.50 an hour....sigh and I don't even get the extra day off compensation as we are obligated to be there for every contract day and we get a total of 6 sick days and 2 personal days a year and you can only save personal not sick leave.

I think it's just a cultural thing. I mean back in the day, talking about someone's income was like asking who's on top. Nowadays, either question could/should be fair game, were it not for the fogey's among us. Like me. (I like it both ways, and my income while not a secret (I work for the State and for $10 you can look it up yourself on the internets), I don't publish it in the Town Crier.

I think it's a combination of things. I'm not sure who deemed it rude to speak of money matters, but it's always been ingrained in me.

On the company side, you would get unionization if people openly discussed salaries. If you know Joe Bob is making twice as much for the same job, you gather everyone else doing the job and get together, tell the owner you start paying us what Joe Bob makes or we're leaving. Thus, employers are rightfully scared of their employees knowing how much each one makes. Scared enough, that my business owner uncle told me 'if I hear of an employee talking salaries with another, they're gone. If an employee comes to me and asks for a raise because Joe Bob does the same job and makes more, they're gone.'

I actually almost got fired recently because in the course of my daily work duties I happened across salary information. Now, I did nothing with it except stew over it (co-worker who was hired just months before was making almost $400 a month more than me...and I've been here for 7 years...plus I have experience and a college education, she didn't. Add to that, she was bad at her job and I was doing most of it. So bad, in fact, that she became only the second employee this company has ever fired.) but I still almost got fired when I pointed the accessibility of the info out to management. They were pissed I didn't do it right away. I didn't think any thing of it. But that illustrates how seriously companies feel about the sharing of income between co-workers. It breeds ill-will as well as possible revolt.

This happens in the horse world too. You NEVER ask how much someone paid for their horse. There are many reasons, some to hide barely legal acts (agents will charge double commissions or will tell owner horse sold for $50K when it sold for twice that and then pocket the rest), and some to keep your interest secure...(no one wants to know they just paid $50k for a horse the owner bought for $5k a year ago).

I think there's also a bit of truth to what you alluded to earlier about the income disparity. Richie Rich ought not to tell Orphan Annie how much he makes because a) she can't even think in those kind of numbers and b) she can already tell there's an obvious difference and doesn't need her nose rubbed in it. Likewise Annie (not your Annie, MsG) probably doesn't feel any kinda need to exposit her income because a) she feels ashamed by its paltriness and b) because she would probably have to reveal the source of the income of which she might feel ashamed or at least if she feel's pride about, realizes that someone else might not share that view.

Maybe that's where the silence is golden rule came from.

Regarding moolah, I've never felt uncomfortable discussing my own pay (which currently is 6.95/hour; last year around this time it was still 5.15), but I can understand if others like to keep it under wraps. My brokeness is kind of a banner of pride for me. Every time I see those VH1 shows about wealthy celebrities, I shake my head. Those people have seriously lost all common sense.

Interesting you say that. Despite the fact that 3 counties in my general vicinity (including my county, Montgomery County) are on the top wealthiest counties in the country, many of those McMansions hold a secret.

Husband often goes to very wealthy households either for carpentry work or his gas stove gig. He's told me that many of those homes have whole rooms, whole wings, with no furniture in them. The owner's can afford to furnish them, apparently. (Yet another death knell to the furniture business!

Mav isn't not even been a week has it? I did have a thought though...you're so good at management stuff you should check out local schools/private schools and see if they're in need of the managing secretary ( which sounds like being a secretary, but isn't) it's the person who literally runs the school, handles all payroll, and controls all incoming and outgoing money, etc...

I was downsized (sounds kinder than laid off, I guess) on Monday, so it hasn't been a week. i just get antsy sitting around. I want to work. I need to work.

That's a good idea, MsG. I will look into it. Would schools hire me during the summer, though? I guess the first place to start is the school system website.

Mav- yeah right now is when schools do their hiring so it's the perfect time. Staff don't say whether they're coming back or not until the last couple days of school so it's likely they just found out how many they are short by and would really welcome someone with your qualifications... check your district's classified postings.
