Guess I didn't understand your question.

Re-read and based on different comprehension I would say:

People are leery of motive of the question? Really, how many people are really asking what you make in order to suss out career salary ranges? Many are asking to compare their's to your's. To see if THEY think they should be making more based on their assumptions of your education, intelligence, work ethic, etc. To make themselves feel better about themselves (if they make more) or be indignant if they don't. It provides drama.

And sure, people are ashamed of what they make. I am. I should be making more, I have the skills, abilities and education to make more. However, I have NO ambition and I don't want to work too hard. So I make a pittance that sustains me, but compared to people my age, it's a paltry sum.
