Previous thread:

NBC is premiering a reality show called "Age of Love" ( http://www.nbc.com/Age_of_Love/). Much like The Bachelor the show centers around a single guy picking a woman out of a group of women. The twist this time is that half of the women are in their 20s, half are in their 40s. The man is 30.

So as a ponderable, or as a category of ponderables, which group should the man favor?

Edit: I'm not sure if I will even view the program. I don't watch a whole lot of TV and I really don't like reality shows. But I've seen the commercials and the concept is interesting.

W00t for you, NV.

Well, there's another show I won't be watching.
Personally, I would think he'd have trouble with either group...but imo he'd have better luck having a relationship with the "more experienced" women.

Reminds me. I gotta go worship my TiVo. The more I see of network tv, the more I worship at Tivo's stubbly little feet.

Depends on the guy, really. If he's less mature, maybe he should favor the 20-somethings; more mature, the 40-somethings. But, then, that also assumes that 20-somethings are less mature, and 40-somethings are more mature, when it really depends on the individual. So, I guess it depends on them all, really - though, because it's a reality show, I expect they'll have selected the two groups (and him) to fit the maturity assumptions.

With the genders reversed, I can tell you that I have more to offer in the older group than I would when I was younger. (Not that I'm doing any offering.) I'm not sure that I could even be a friend of the 20 year-old me.

Sorry, but I'd make it real easy. Dress 'em all up in cammies, hand 'em a mask and marker and watch the paint fly. Not that I would choose any of them. It'd just be entertaining. After all is said and done the ones still standing, wanting to keep shooting and smiling might have a chance.

Okay, really. Isn't the idea of the show just as asinine as so many already on the air. Like trolls, if we keep giving them attention then they'll keep coming back. Hmm. Maybe the programmers are really trolls trying to take over the 'verse.

Boycott "reality" TV.

I look at it this way: As much as I love my almost-the-same-age-as-me wife, I don't know if I would be attracted to the 20-year-old version of her (other than physically). And I doubt that the 20-year-old version of me would like my wife.

At 30, which way would I have gone?

She is still the same lovely woman, but also not.

I would say I'm very very different from when I was 20 ( though I'd really like to have my 20 year old ass back) but I definitely like myself at both ages( I'm 33)

One more show I don't need to watch.

Age thing seems like a sorta personal choice, all depends on what you're looking for. Personally I can think of plenty of better things to worry about than her age.

I don't see anything wrong with cucumber. In fact fruity/veggie smells have a great freshness to them that is different from the "usual" flowery smell.

I know as a show the concept is lame, but the adverts made me think a bit about the past 20 years with my wife and how we have grown together. Now I wonder more what the next 20 will be like.

MSG, I've been banned from B&BW by my wife. They had a sale where you could buy 3 and get 1 free. She sent me there with a list of body wash scents to get. So I got 3 mint-whatever and got the 4th free. And 3 vanilla-whatever and got the 4th free. And the same with 2 other scents. I thought I was doing good until I came home. She only wanted four TOTAL bottles. So no more B&BW shopping for me until she takes about 1600 showers.

Vanilla, when *cough* intimate. Nice and earthy. ("Warm, dark" vanilla, not sweet candy vanilla) Berries at other times.

Much nicer smells for women than the harsh perfumes that make my eyes water when I walk by a perfume counter. Or get close (or not close) to the type of women that bathe in perfume.

But when people ask... when they're trying to get an idea of the job market... etc. ... why all the dancing around the answer?

Read the question, read the answers, re-read them both a couple times more to try to suss out the intent and here’s my (multi-part) answer:

1. Incomes -- even if researching starting salaries by asking -- tends to be taken completely out of context. (eg.. Teachers’ starting salaries: $33k for licensed and certified teachers with a BEd in Hawaii, when compared to anywhere else is a hella lot.

2. It’s a number…and (my experience) people get hung up on numbers…

3. Depending on where someone is, that number might be telling people even less than most people think. (eg. Where I am the starting salary is about $33k. Taking the cost of living where I am, that’s probably equal to $23k on the continental US.)

Sometimes I think this is why the school system I work for is able to recruit so many people -- they see the big numbers for a salary, but seem to miss the fact that everything here costs up to three times as much as the continental US. (That might also be why there’s a lot of people who cycle out -- go back home -- after a year or two.)

4. Feelings of inadequacy -- for example: “I’m 35, I’ve got a bachelor’s degree, and I’m making $12k. The kid next door is 23, dropped out of school at 12, and makes $100k. WTFH is wrong with this?”

…and since I’m posting on the new thread…

Another show I won’t be watching, I guess. (Actually, I can’t catch NBC very well on my tv, so I rarely get to watch anything on that station.) Do I care what age group a 30-year old guy picks to date (much less whom the guy chooses)? Nope. Does it even matter to me? Only if I were competing with someone for another person’s affections…and the likelihood of me doing that is about the same as it spontaneously snowing on Tahiti.

RIMG: Hope I wasn’t part of the reason you got into a situation this week with Ami…and this still hasn’t really changed the likelihood of my continuing to post -- just felt the need to try and answer HK's question.
NVG: I think I like the hero-type that’s humble (too much of that ingrained as part of my culture/growing up).
MsG: One week down, two more for me to go…This week has been mostly slug-type of behavior. I need to start getting geared up for the end of July soon.

Read the question, read the answers, re-read them both a couple times more to try to suss out the intent and here’s my (multi-part) answer:
I understand what you're saying. Completely.

Information - like salaries - can be misleading and detrimental if not taken in context and metered with perspective and alternate views.

I guess it still leaves me wondering, though. If you take out the competition aspect, or the guilt aspect, or any of those wacky emotions... how do you know what you "should" be making if you have no input? And by "should," I do mean compared to peers, not compared to random people in various jobs around the country. More importantly, how do you know your company isn't completely taking advantage of you because the fair and decent wages topic is so hush-hush?

Example: there was a college student working her way through college at my company. She was barely scraping by. Fast forward 4 years, and she was still barely scraping by because Company didn't want to give her much in the way of raises. At the end of her rope, she started talking to me about it - she has a great deal of experience in her job, and had taken on tremendously more responsibilities... moreso than even her manager... but she just wasn't making enough money to keep everything afloat without some serious stress and magic. I tried to give her advice while completely avoiding the "how much are you making?" question. She finally told me on her own, and my jaw nearly hit the table. I know for a fact that she was making a little less than half of what anyone else with her experience in her position in any other company in the area would be making. I even showed her the job listings and gave her the phone numbers of people I knew in the same job position. She just didn't know any better because no one was willing to lend perspective to the issue, and Company sure as hell wasn't going to tell her that they're grossly under-paying her. So, she found a new job at a wage she "should" be making and is putting herself through school with much less stress and hardship.

I guess that's why the issue bothers me so much. To me, it's not about how much you make, it's not about making others feel bad or stupid or "less than," it's not about bragging. I simply see it as a valuable source of information to help people gain perspective in order to assess whether or not they're being taken advantage of or if there are better opportunities out there for them. Really, how can you make any sort of informed decision without information?

...

*shifty eyes*

OKAY. And now that I've rambed oh so very much, I think I'll just go away now. I don't even know why I typed that all out. Could just maybe be I'm under a wee bit o'stress. Heh. Hee. Hee hee... XD

Hug for HK.

I found out verified I was underpaid by shifting employers. Drastic, but beats trying to get blood from Turnip Co.

Edit: Industry engineering rags often publish salary averages and the such. Yes, this is vague, but some extrapolation can be done. Medical device companies, for example should attract just about the best of the best and pay appropriately. Should. :-) But there is no accurate measuring device. Just sleuthing and finding vague answers. (Like this one.)

Edit 2: I had a co-worker mention his salary in conversation once. It was about 10k less than mine. Frankly I thought his skill set was on par with mine, but that he had much more sh*t to manage. I told him point blank that if he were to go to management and ask for a raise that he might get 5k more, and more sh*t to manage. After a couple months I finally talked him into working for a better company. He got a $15k bump. He mentioned this and then said "Sorry" as if making 5k more than me hurt me or something. I wouldn't have helped him if I didn't want him and his small family have a chance at making ends meet.

Edit 3: For the life of me I can't even recall how much money I was making when I was in the medical device field. The older you get the more... Oh hell.

Heya ya'll I need some love or less love depending on how you look at it. So anyway last week was my birthday. I went out had fun and all was well. Untill I got home and remembered why I hate my birthday. Reminds we of the craptastic way I grew up. Oh after drinking my through an ocean of vodka I was informed that I did very bad things. Overly friendly guy friends and my boy whom I love desperatly walking in and promptly hitting a tree in the park. Now his hands are mangled and I feel like breaking up with him just to save the poor boy any more pain.

I might watch that. Like American Gladiators meets the Bachelor. Of course, everything'd be better with a little more violence.

Are these shows any different than real life? I don't partake in this silly bullshit myself, but I've witnessed males going as far as to do handstands and backflips to compete over a female. MONKEYS do that. I'm sure women do similar things, although I'm not privy to it and it's no doubt much more subtle. Does the entire concept of competing for a mate not strike anyone else as primative and unevolved? I personally feel like if I was ever put in a position where a female expected me to impress her more than other potential suiters, I would feel incredibly insulted. Why should I be made subject to someone else's interpertation of my worth?

Ride down from Asgard to the battlefield,
Bringer of the valiant dead who died but never yielded,
Carry we who die in battle over land and sea,
Across the rainbow bridge to Valhalla,
Odin's waiting for me.

At least you get Doctor Who Hobbleit...we still haven't gotten season 3...sigh

Morning all...HUGS Jimi and all the other dads

HK- hey sometimes it's nice to have a girly moment...throws attackers off as it's so unpredictable

Edit- CMH oh absolutely I think it's pitiful and sort of strange. Why would you want to choose a mate from a group of people so desperate for attention that they'd utterly humiliate themselves to get your attention.. good way to eliminate the nut jobs from the dating pool...
It's kind of creepy. I've always thought any guy that did something dumb to impress me was basically too insecure and stupid to be worth my time... I'm pretty much impressed by confidence, intelligence, and a dark sense of humor.

Overly friendly guy friends and my boy whom I love desperatly walking in and promptly hitting a tree in the park. Now his hands are mangled and I feel like breaking up with him just to save the poor boy any more pain.

This didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Can you clarify walking in and promptly hitting a tree in the park? Is he blind? How did he walk into a tree? What were you doing drinking vodka in a park anyway? And are you blaming yourself for him getting hurt?

Never break up with someone because you think you're not good enough for them. That's their choice to make.

Nice! But:

1) Almost any woman can touch my nose with her tongue.

2) The nose isn't the favored protuberance.

3) Tug on your earlobe with your tongue and your job search days are over.
