the movie is not the Series. Only the facts have been changed, to irritate the innocent; the names of the actors and characters remain the same

Just received an email with that title, from Amazon.com (USA). Their "Biggest Surprise" is Firefly.

Hey I love that we're consistently in the top 100 purchases of dvds and when you think about how many tens of thousands of dvds they have...we rock

Hey, YT, you should edit your original post to put the Sleepers and Keepers link at the top.

More people should read this and casually pass the link on in their email communications: "BTW: Remember that Firefly TV show I was telling you about? Its box set is No. 2 on Amazon's list of all-time top sellers--just behind Star Wars. Funny though, Firefly has more customer ratings and a higher average rating than Star Wars: all five stars."

The Amazon page
http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=pe_fe_exp_1/?docId=100008448
1

includes this: "These DVDs are our perennial top-sellers, consistently selling the most, month after month, over the last several years. They're all keepers, of course--but some, like Firefly: The Complete Series and Love Actually, have been quiet hits, selling copy after copy since the day they were released without ever having made industry headlines--those are our "sleepers."

Why do you suppose that Firefly is atop the list of those sleepers when you follow the "Biggest Surprises" link? Seems like no surprise to us.

Hate to be called a "quiet hit," though. Gotta keep on plugging.

Done. And thank you for the suggestion. Took me awhile because:
1) My main hard drive died. I waited a couple of days before buying a new one, to be sure it was really dead, by which point . . .
2) my computer guru was out of town for the weekend. I needed his help to setup my email service.
3) When I saw your post, I couldn't remember what email address & password I'd used to logon to Fff.n

Now that I've spent about 50 hours installing & setting up the new drive, my computer can once again find the previous one.

We've known it for a long time, but it's good Amazon is getting people to see the light. This kinda (not really) brings up a question that's been bugging me; At what point is a show coming back not a viable option? I mean, I'm not talking Star Trek/TNG type comeback. It's been like five years since our BDMs were on the air. I'm wondering how long is too long?

I suspect that most of us would prefer there not be a long gap betwixt the timeline of the original series and a continuation. So long as Summer Glau can convince me that River Tam is no more'n a year (mebbe two) older than she was in the series, I won't give up hope.

If Joss wants to bang out a script that involves having the words "Five Years Later..." appear on the screen early on, that's fine by me.

Why are people always so 'surprised' by this kind of thing? Seriously. The high DVD sales were a 'surprise'. The movie was a 'surprise'. The turnout at conventions is a consistant 'surprise'. Serenity being voted best sci-fi movie over Star Wars was a 'surprise' (and according to those who have never seen it, an outrage).
What the hell do we have to do to make people stop being so gorramn surprised?

Thing is, there is no "this kind of thing". Firefly is unique.

It was a TV show cancelled in half a season. Are there any other shows cancelled in half a season that have sold as well on Amazon.com?

Adam Baldwin knew that the DVDs had sold well, but even he was surprised that they had reached #2 on Amazon.com in 2005 July (Signal, season 1 #4 http://signal.serenityfirefly.com/season1/ ), more than a year & a half after the DVD release. And let us not forget that he was the one who said they all knew at the time that they were creating something great. Still, he was surprised by its level of success.

There's also what I call the Tracy Hickman effect, after his annecdote of finding Firefly (Signal, season 1 #15, same link as above). After he says he'll get the DVDs when he gets back home, the punch line comes, "Oh no. We have to send them to you." Has any other show ever had that effect on you? I've given away 7 sets; nothing else has affected me this way.

And rather than berate Amazon.com for being surprised, let's thank them for putting out that list, with Firefly at the top. I just looked it up http://fireflyfans.net/amazon.asp

Firefly is back up to #18 (from #80, when Amazon.com put out the list),
3 & 1/2 years after its DVD release,
4 & 1/2 years after the show was cancelled.

That's astounding; it's fantastic. And ain't it cool?

Notice how Star Wars Trilogy (Widescreen Edition with Bonus Disc) at no.1 has a three and a half star rating while Firefly has a five star rating, nice.

No, there aren't, but Firefly does it and continues to do it and that so many people continue to be surprised by it irritates me. That's what I meant. "This kind of thing" happens to Firefly all the time. It's frustrating to see it happen over and over, and then see all the people standing around scratching their heads as to why. It's like there's a ring fog around this show, and once you get past it, you see it, but otherwise you're going "But what's so interesting?" and a whole lot of people haven't seen past the fog, and don't care, and are always surprised by how many people are coming in and out of it. Even other geeks, professional geeks like the people in charge of DragonCon, don't give it the attention it deserves, even after all the browncoat panels and parties and guests were overbooked last year, they still couldn't guarantee a larger room for the shindig, and have yet to book many Firefly guests. They still don't see it. And that's why I asked what we would have to do for people to stop being surprised.
