We are all just a bunch of side-show freaks.

Although Mav's and MSG's undemonstrated talent has the significant appeal of sexual innuendo, perhaps more Cooler members will admit to odd anatomical abilities.

Good Monday morning folks.

Busy weekend. Yay. NOT! Well kinda.

Anyhoo. I wanted to follow up with CMH and the competition ponderable.

I personally will not compete for affection. There is something disturbing about a world and people who need to compete for the most basic and neccessary human emotion. Someone who expects others to compete for their affections has serious mental and emotional issues. Anyone who subjects themselves to such a game also has severe issues. Not to say that I don't have issues, but that is one I refuse to have. Either folks click or they don't. No point in trying to force the issue.

I can understand competition for sex, but not love. It has no place in a stable, healthy human life.

I thinks I want to bitch slap folks who cannot discern the differance between sex and love or who expect one with the other. It is childish to consider the two to be the same.

So I worked on the "shed" half the day Sunday and now have my own shop/armory. I'd put my locker out there but the boom booms are better left in the house. Just really stoked about having workbenches and lights and tools at my disposal. Not to mention having all the PB gear outta my room made for space I sorely needed. Thinkin' I might even reassemble the bed and actually sleep on it.

ADD: I'm laughing and my staff is wondering about the f-ed up smile. Are you doing all three at the same time Fly? ('Cause I didi and realized how idiotic I musta looked)

Hey did you know the ability to curl your tounge into a tube is actually genetic... like having fully or semi attached earlobes.

Yes indeedy MSG. My room is the warmest in the house and it sucks. I do have to find some mosquito netting to hang over the door (gorram bugs). As for the girl at the fetish shop: I actually got a little jealous the other day. One fella from high school that annoyed me with his pretntious genius wash discussing gaming with her. Since he just annoys me with his presence I completely stayed away with the fear I might dislodge his cranium from his posterior just so I could punch him in the nose. Instead I dug through old Sam Keiths The Maxx issues in the hopes of finding the Numero Uno Foil cover I shoulda bought YEARS ago.

Jimi, oh what a big thank you I gotta give. Enjoyed the last bottle last night with a little barbeque. Assembling a care package to show my gratitude.

Good morning Imponderables! I'm back, I survived the wedding -- mostly because hubby decided to get the rental with a GPS navigation system. That thing saved us more than a dozen times in two days!

Ok, tons and tons of replies, somewhat out of order but hopefully in the order that makes the most sense.

Why are people so secretive about their income?

I read through yesterday's thread, and I think several good reasons were brought up. But I agree with you, there are times when it should be appropriate to talk about it, quietly between a few people, but we're still quite bashful about it. There's a movement in my industry to start talking about these things more openly, so that we can negotiate our contracts more aggressively. The funny thing is that we all talk about it behind closed doors anyway, so we have a rough idea of paychecks and bonus checks anyway -- but not enough of a solid idea to be able to take those numbers into a salary negotiation.

Honestly I think the reason has more to do with The Old Boys' Network than anything else. I think most industries have them, in one form or another -- the guys who play golf or poker or whatever together, and mysteriously get promoted way ahead of their skill-set. If talking about salaries openly was acceptable, it would cut the legs out from under the OBNs. You can't promote your golf buddy to a position making $100,000/year when he has 5 years less experience, a lower grade education, and worse performance reviews than someone who has been working for the company for 3 years longer than Golf Buddy (to quote an exact situation that I witnessed) if salaries are out in the open. The rest of the company would revolt! So to keep themselves in power, the OBNs make sure that from the top down, it's rude to talk about salary in our culture.

Quote:

Originally posted by Rugbug:
Really, how many people are really asking what you make in order to suss out career salary ranges?

See that's one of the things that I think *should* be appropriate to ask, at the right time and of the right people. In the tech field, if you've been working in Texas and are considering taking a job in California, where the "cost of living" is a lot higher, I think it is (or should be) fine to ask about a salary range, so that you can compare that against rent costs, food, gas, etc etc. Getting a generic "oh that position usually gets a salary between $70,000 and $85,000, depending" is a lot different than asking a person what they personally make. IMHO, anyway.

More importantly, how do you know your company isn't completely taking advantage of you because the fair and decent wages topic is so hush-hush?

I definitely agree with you on this, and that's why I think salary ranges and anonymous salary surveys (per industry) are a great idea. There's a group within my industry that every couple of years publishes an anonymous survey that breaks down salaries by job title, by years of experience, by area of the country, etc. Of course you have to make some mental adjustments with regard to your own job title, experience, and location, but at least it gives you an idea of how many zeroes should be attached to your paycheck. And knowing that can help you decide to leave your c**ksucker of an employer and seek out a better salary elsewhere.

It's similar out here in SoCal (have I mentioned that I live in Orange County, aka "The OC"? yeah, flaunting is a big thing here ), but I really think that most people aren't flaunting what they do have, they're flaunting what they want everyone else to think they have. So they're in debt up to their eyeballs, buy houses they can't afford, cars they can barely keep repaired, large TVs on credit, all so it can look like they're making a lot of money. Personally, I'd rather live in a smaller house and drive a less pretentious car, if it means not being in debt. But I understand the pressure to fit in around here, to look like you make enough money to live here in the first place. But it's all about appearances, and rarely about actual cash flow.

So as a ponderable, or as a category of ponderables, which group should the man favor?

Completely depends on the people at hand, I think. I married an older guy, mostly because I've never been able to stand guys my own age (no offense Jimi, lol). I never dated anyone less than 2 years older than me, and I like I mentioned last week, I married a guy 8 years older. I *still* have more in common with him and the guys his age than I do with the guys my age, so I don't think it was just an issue of the maturity of 21 year old guys when I was 21. But I don't think there's anything wrong with an older women and a younger guy -- in fact, we have at least three such marriages in my family (my mom's parents, my mom and dad, and my brother and his wife, possibly more if I were to go through and count off each of my 12 aunts and uncles, and 34 first cousins), though those are all differences of less than 2 years.

I say, if you have enough in common, and you make each other happy, why the hell not? It's not like most of these marriages are about the guy bringing home the bacon while the woman has babies, which is one of the reasons that older man/younger woman marriages have been favored in centuries past. And I think women in their 40s are going through a huge cultural awakening right now -- the whole "I finally feel like I know who I am" thing -- so why not?

Wow CMH, I think that's one of the first things you and I have ever agreed on. If a person can't see your worth, see how great you are, then they aren't the right person for you anyway. I think a little bit of trying to impress a person is a normal part of dating and it's great when it's mutual between two people, but if it gets to the point that you're competing against other people of the attention of a potential mate, I say screw it and walk away. Either you've already caught their attention and they'll follow you and ignore the crowd of idiots, or they were more interested in the attention than in getting to know you anyway. And as far as impressing the person you're dating, I think that should also stop pretty quickly, so you can get to know the real person, and not the person they're trying to convince you they are.

Hey, if I could have some padding under that cammie, I could probably pass that test! My one experience with paintball (I hope that's what you meant here, lol) was a rainy January day in northern California. Most of my stuff is orange/mango and/or strawberry smelling, though I tend not to wear much smelly stuff outside of shampoo. I have been thinking about getting smelly lotion though, because I like the mango-strawberry smell so much.

Check, check, and check. Apparently raising one eyebrow is the only thing that makes me look like my father, so we've been known to do it at parties just to prove that we're related (no one believes he's old enough to be my father, and he only barely is, heh). I can also grab my wrists between my shoulder blades, and rotate my arms 270 degrees with my palms flat on the table. And I'm the least flexible of all my siblings, lol.

List, hands down. Hubby is allowed to wing it, but only because he a) has really good taste in everything, including jewelry; b) knows what I already own; c) knows better than to buy me clothes without having me try them on first; and d) knows how picky I am about weird things like picture frames. But I have five siblings, a sister-in-law, and two parents whom I talk to several times a week, and yet couldn't buy me a shirt that fits if their life depended on it. So for them, I make a list. And since we live in different states, I try to find where the things I want can be ordered online, to make things easier. Course, I don't have any gift days until Christmas.

Lordy, did I finally make it to the end?? Sigh, it's good to be back.

Edit: Why oh why don't we have a preview thing on this board?

Wha? A list? ... I only ever heard of that for little kids. Of course, most of my friends just end up buying me gift cards anyway (whereas I get them really cool, and person-appropriate, little things), so maybe I should try it. Or I could just tell them to give me the money they were going to spend on me so I can put it to better use.

::shrugs::

I can do the tongue thing, though! It's about 50/50 for everyone, I think is how it works genetically.

Genetics... which reminds me... do people sleep through that part of biology class? Are they just old, and never had the class in the first place? Because if I hear "Where/who did you get your red hair from?" one more time, I'm gonna eat that person (though they won't taste good, I'm sure).

It's called recessive genes, people. Sheesh!

Oh, and I heard somewhere that on the average people are getting smarter, but I'm not seeing it. Maybe they should try taking the median instead. Those work better when there are outliers.

I've always wanted to answer, "Aisle 5 (or whatever). The color number is 666."

Lol, that's where mine came from the 7 years that I had red hair. But I had a great-grandmother who was a natural redhead, and I inherited some of her coloring, including green eyes. So it worked.

Man, I should really try to get some work done.

Lol, Mav, so can I! Hmmm, I wonder if HK can too...

Yay CK! HK? Can you do this, too???

Ok. I hate the banking industry, and everything they stand for! Still can't open that stupid checking account for my Uncle's estate. Gah! Gorramn money launderers have made the laws too hard to get around!

And yingyang? I get that "red hair question", too.

Really? Does it get better or worse as you get older? 'Cause that's the other thing that bothers me about that question - random people just coming up for no reason except to ask that question. Creepy and rude.

And, piffle on the bank. Meanies.

Anyway... how goes the job search? Or are we not talking about that because it's too frustrating?

It actually gets better as you get older. Very few people come up to me today with those types of questions. That was more when I was a teeneager. But occasionally... It is bad when the random people touch your hair while talking about it to someone else. THAT has happened to me and I nearly died!

And the job search...goes. My next door neighbors (and MsG) have all urged me to look into my local school system to see if they are hiring. I may be going to my sister's house in a few minutes to use her printer to print out the applications -

edit: Forgot to mention, I have solved my Itunes vs Windows Media downloaded tune thing.

To import a "protected" WMA file into your Ipod: Burn the offending tunes to a disc, open Itunes, and have Itunes read the disc and it will rip the song into aac format which Itunes can read.
(So far, I've scored 3 songs from the Buddig download promo that I can't use - until now. Now I gotta go find an empty disc. I have none!

I have been told that all hair is red on a very basic level, then genetics or whatnot cause it to be brown or black or blonde or what have you (I didn't really pay attention to genetics because it was in biology, and I could never get into that as much as the other sciences because there wasn't enough math in it).

All hair is black on a certain level. It is only the excitation and interaction of photons that makes it appear... *HK is such a nerd*

I think I've had the hair-touching thing happen to me, except I was really little. Ew.

If the school systems are anything like the one I go to, they probably are hiring. Anyway, I hope you don't have to send out too many more applications, and that you find a good job with good pay (although I realize that last part may be a bit too much to ask for, given the job market).

Actually, I think there's a red/not red gene (not red being dominant, of course) and that there are other genes that control the shade. It's complicated.
