will it happen? Right now, it seems kind of improbable. Joss said that it depended on the success of the movie, and it was a hit, right? I feel like something would have happened by now if it ever was going to.

I heard that a series of compic books were released to fill in the time gap between Firefly and Serenity. Since thay can't pick up the show after Serenity because major characters have died, it seems as if they've closed the books on bringing Firefly back as a TV series.

Don't get me wrong. I loved the movie. I realize just how amazing it was that a movie was made from a cancelled TV show, but it wasn't enough. I don't know if I will ever be uninterested in Firefly.

But it's the show, the movie, that I like. I don't want to read comic books. I want to see the actors and the writers up there on the screen making the same magic they made before. I love that show.

I would INTENTLY watch the commercials if the show was brought back. I would buy every product that was advertised. I would pay the price of a movie ticket to see each episode if need be! I need to know: is there really any chance that it will ever be picked up again?

I would appreciate it if people more in tune with firefly news could appraise me of the situation.

I don't believe that Joss ever said Firefly coming back was dependent upon the success of the movie. The only thing the success of the movie would have brought was another movie.

Diety,

First of all, you're sure not alone in missing the show and wishing for more. I've been here for almost two years and I still miss Firefly.
Not a day goes by I don't wish for it to come back.
So I feel your pain.

You're right when you say that the show coming back is improbable.

I think that Joss and the folks who helped him make the movie both crew and actors and Universal and absolutely the Browncoat fandom hoped that the movie would parlay us all into more Serenity. But the box office take was dismal despite the critical success of the film and the fact that it won numerous awards. So right now, we're all waiting to see what the sales of the Serenity DVD plus the sales of the Collector's Edition of the DVD will bring us if anything.

There's some folks in the fandom now who will tell you there's absolutely no hope of anything at all.
And it does look desperate, it truly does.
But...

I'm not much on giving up, never have been.
I still believe there's a chance for something... maybe a direct to DVD movie, especially if the SG-1 direct to DVD movie does well. It's a slim chance, but I'm willing to hold.

While I'm waiting I have all the FF/S goodness that IS here now. The show, the film, the boards, my friends, the many activities that BC's are up to. Have you checked to see if there is a charity screening close to you?

Check out Bix's signature banner link, maybe you can meet up with fellow BC's and share in the joy of a screening and do good works at the same time.

@deity:

There's actually a fair bit going on in the community right now that you might want to take a look at. In FollowMal's sig, you'll find one such group.

Also, there has been a website launched (see my sig) that is working at keeping track of things Firefly/Serenity.

Personally I'm pessimistic about the chances of getting more. IMO, the only thing we'll get is more comics and possibly novels and that's it. Anything more will have to be a fan creation.

This isn't necessarily a horrid thing though. The fans of FF/S tend to be quite creative. We're just going to have to start putting more time, energy and organization into these pursuits*.

* Please note that I'm NOT saying that we should abandon promoting, etc. Just that /more/ energy should be put into other things.

Good morning DEITY

First of all there’s no way of knowing what Hollywood or movies companies are thinking or planning next. That is unless they tell you and they usually do that as promotion to what’s already been made. The movie and tv business are trend driven meaning that what is working for one company is usually copied by another one. It is rare that groundbreaking new shows happen. FIREFLY was that kind of show.

Anyway I can’t tell you that right now there’s firm proof that more film material of our beloved show are in the plans of being made. Whether for the small screen or big screen. All I can tell you is that I have a feeling that there will be more. I’ve got a couple of links I’m posting here also that may help if any information comes the way of the browncoats. That’s about all I can give you for now, and HOPE. Just hang in there. Hold the line and tell everyone you know about this SHINY show.

BROWNCOAT1

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

First off, welcome to the board Deity. Glad to have you here posting with us.

I think the probability of the show as we knew it ever coming back is remote. It is going on five years since the cancellation and I have been here for all of it. We got more than anyone would have ever thought possible. The movie was great, but the only thing it's success would buy us is a sequel. Granted, we all want a sequel, but I disagree that I would not take any continuation of the series I could get. I enjoyed the first comic mini-series Those Left Behind and I am looking forward to Better Days which is due out this year. The comics are a valid continuation of the story and one that I am very happy about.

With the release of the Special Edition dvd of Serenity this summer, the browncoats are given another opportunity to show why we are the best fandom out there. We have the chance to push the SE dvd and drive sales past expectations. We can send a message to Joss, Universal and the world that we are still here, with more browncoats joining every day, and that we want the story told.

Don't give up hope Deity. Some of us have been here since the beginning and we aren't quitting. It's been a wild ride, but it was worth every second of it.

I don't want comic books though. I love the show itself, as a whole, not stories about the show. I want to see the whole thing brought back, or nothing at all.

This isn't about you or what you want. It's about what we'll get. If you don't like it fine. But, let's not bet on a pipe dream. With the series in the hands of F*X, just let that one go.

Here's what's reasonable (said above as well):

- We're getting more comics.
- We're getting a SE of the BDM.

Buy them. Large profits == large community == better risk analysis for more FF/S projects.

This is good for another movie. But again, don't bet on this one for a while. I've head that Joss himself has said that he wants a few years before doing another movie if at all.

This is actually good for our BDH's as well. It allows them to get a better rep, with more experience, etc. This also lessens the whole type-casting thing.

Basically, we of course all want more. And we might have a "bigger picture goal" of what that more might be. But, in the end, we have to pick our battles and pick what is reasonable for the near(er) future. This way, we create a foundation for latter success along with growing the fan base.

Very well said SigmaNunki. Don't think there is much that can be added to that.

Deity, I know it is not a perfect scenario. I don't think there is a single browncoat that doesn't want the series picked back up and on tv, but at this point I simply can't see that happening. We ain't got to like it, that's just the way it is. So, we deal with it.

We focus our efforts where they will do the most good and that is spreading the word, expanding the fanbase, pushing the dvds to boost profits, and the continued efforts with charities to bring some positive press to the community.

I hope you will assist with these efforts. We need every browncoat we can get. If you choose not to because there is no guarantee of a renewed series, well, I'll wish you well. Don't necessarily agree with your reasoning, but I'll respect it.

Well said. I have only a little bit to add. Back in the Day (yeah, I am that old) when Star Trek Fandom was crushed when the original series was cancelled, there was much effort even before the series went away to bring it back.

That series never did come back. There was a long gap where the only thing that kept it going was motivated fans. There was fan fiction, and then several books that ran from pretty good to terrible, and then Saturday Morning cartoons that were pretty bad. Through all this on college campuses, SF Conventions, etc.... the fan base grew. Being young and in an underground fan movement was WAY fun.

It brought on the movies and the new series. They, quite rightly, didn't try to recreate the old series, they used that as a base and wrote new fiction.

THe same thing can happen here. Joss and Gene Rodenberry have several parrallels. They both had several TV series under their belts, they both had a cause that they encorporated into their work and they both were charismatic men.

So IMHO, do this because the people you meet are good people, do this because there are good things like the charities, the fan fiction, comics and books coming out of it, do this because this strikes a chord in your heart.

I the old series is gone. May it rest in peace, but much new and good can come from it if we join in this and celebrate that community. Good things will happen, and they will be new good things.

Getting off my soap box now ;-)

If these goals interest you (or anyone!) at all, please go to the Guerilla Marketing Forum and check out "Operation Signal Boost". It's a Summer-long list of Activities to help folks do those very things Browncoat1 said

We Hold... and we GROW as a Fandom. Those are our primary tasks to keep the Sereniverse Alive.

I just hope nobody ever tries to make a spinoff of Firefly with new characters and a new ship. If it can't be Serenity and her crew, I'm going to feel very sad about it.
