I know I don't post here often and I hope you don't think I'm out of line saying this here, but I think that's the whole point of the project.

Of course, that's just my interpretation of it. I'm certainly not trying to say that anyone who doesn't view it as I do is wrong.

I agree with Malgal here and think Mr Firrell has in a way already achieved his objective which makes me wonder whether his choice of Nathan Fillion as the first 'hero' is as random or complimentary as it may appear. Perhaps the choice was fueled somewhat by the artist's awareness of what has been achieved by Firefly/Serenity fans through the use of the Internet and knowing that the moment he brought Nathan into the project our boards would be a-buzz with every little snippet that could be gleaned about the project to the nth degree. If nothing else he has assured himself of a audience.

Someone, somewhere will be nit picking each word, image and nuance to death. As for the actual message I have to say my concern is with the polarisation of the sexes, men and women are not rivals, nor is one good the other bad, one right and the other wrong etc. They should compliment each other. The concept of Equality seems to have grown beyond that of its' meaning in the dictionary ie the condition of being equal; sameness; evenness. Men and women are not 'the same' and like the French I celebrate our differences as well as the things we may have in common. I would rather that we strive to be fair and treat each other with respect. We can practice on each other, every soul we meet, because we are a work in progress - all of us - until the day we die.

I think Mr Firrell's message might have been more meaningful had he chosen an unknown face as his hero because then he would have a blank canvas upon which to present his point of view. I love Nathan, he is a gifted actor and truly lovely human being. The more interesting choice for Mr Firrell however, would have been if he had chosen Joss Whedon. Joss after all champions Equality Now so what better icon?

This thread alone proves that whether we like Mr Firrells' project/art or not he has already succeeded in promoting discussion and debate and that alone is no bad thing. I would be interested in hearing Nathan's view on how this project was pitched to him and what it means to him.

I'm not here to enter the debate about who should represent Martin's vision- as a woman surrounded by men on my farm, in my business and in my family discussing this in any form and bringing it into meaningful conversation is a plus - no matter who represents the face of this art project.

Since I'm such a fan of Nathan's - it's all the better ( for me ) that it's him.

I did want to point out that Nathan does talk briefly about his opinion of this in the opening segment of the scenes at the site. Perhaps it's not expanded upon, but he does speak about it.

I'm also here to post some more links and information about this for the BSC ( Browncoat Signal Corps ).

That post follows.....

Something beautiful has entered our 'verse. A brilliant art exhibit featuring our hero, our captain, is being previewed on the web. It is entitled, "Hero: the future of gods, icons and heroes." This is the long illusive, super secret, super cool London project that Nathan Fillion has been taunting us with over the last several months. Its masterful creator is artist Martin Firrell, known for his provocative, word-based public art pieces. The social statement of this new work is "heroism without violence." It is an "attempt to define a new kind of heroism." Martin chose Nathan to exemplify this new breed of kinder, gentler hero.

At Martin Firrell's website, you are invited to see a preview of the piece, watch behind the scenes footage, and to contribute your ideas on heroism. Martin will incorporate some of these ideas into the project as he develops it. What a wonderful way to contribute your voice to something so beautiful and meaningful. Not many artists offer the public an opportunity to be a part of their work.

Some fabulous, officially sanctioned banners have been created to help spread the word of this exciting work of art. Please add them to your websites; MySpace, Facebook and LJ pages; as well as your forum signatures, so that everyone knows they can see this preview and add their own ideas about heroism without violence. You will find them at the Hero Command Centre, along with press articles and future multi-media support:
