I was watching Thank You for Smoking, and I realized that Aaron Eckhart reminded me of Nathan Fillion for some way. Both actors have the broad-faced, square jawed look. A quick glance at Google image search shows their hairstyles look kind of similar as well. Though it's certainly not as startling as the Zach Braff-Tom Cavanagh connection.

I'd say that Eckhart's character could be a big-city lawyerly type figure with a past either as an pro-Alliance non-fighter or as a neutral during the war.

Would it make any lick of sense to cast him as Malcolm Reynold's quick-talking elder brother, had Firefly continued on the air (or if Serenity received a sequel)?

And who else would work out well on the show?

Monica Bellucci as Inara's mentor.

Christian Kane as the captain of a ship doing basically what Serenity and her crew does but with an evil take on things (banks, murder, kidnapping etc).
The crew could include Sophia Myles as a toffy nosed Doctor (much like Simon) who catches his eye and pisses Kaylee off, but turns out that she is a psycho and experiments on her patients as much as helps them - and she wants River.

I can see someone like Michelle T. playing Kaylee's sister (I imagine her having a big family, don't remember if that was ever established or not) and someone like Paul Newman playing their Dad. Someone who could scare Simon!!

Bruce Campbell as an old friend/acquaintance and shifty trader who tries to worm his way into Zoe's affections, but she has none of it.

I agree with your liking Aaron Eckhart. As Thank you for Smoking proved he can be totally snarky with the best of them. He can also turn on the charm like he did in Erin Brockovich.

In my fic verse Mal's Pa was from wealthy, success oriented Londinium family and Aaron would be perfect as a long lost Core bred cousin who seeks out his Browncoat relative and is up to no good.

BTW I don't think Mal (in canon)has a brother, older or otherwise.
