There's no way I could explain what's pissing me off without being excessively offensive, so I'm just going to keep it to myself. The short version is, people who with my job on days when my pain level is over 7 should fear for their lives. Or at least fear my scathing emails.

Morning, all. Oh wait, it's afternoon. Stupid clock.

Officially have three days left at awful job, and then I can go on summer vacation. Video games and DVD watching galore. Yay!!!!

*ahem*

Sorry 'bout that. It's just that I haven't had a real break in almost a year. My mom always tells me how I can only be this age once, so this time, I think I'll actually listen to her advice. At least for the next month. Then it's back to the drudgery.

Enough about my sordid life. How's everyone else? Any luck yet, Mav? Oh, and happy anniversary Fly!!!

Edit: Sorry about the work situation, CK. Hope things get better (or that something really evil happens to the person in question ).

Thanks guys. *Hugs* My job is safe for the moment, this is actually more of an industry-wide thing. People who wouldn't last a day in my job trying to tell all the people with my job title how they should do that job. Um, 'scuse me, wtf qualifies you to tell me how to do my job? Oh that's right, not a goddamn thing. It's changed from a "you should listen to us!" thing to a "we're going to lobby the government to make you listen to us" thing in the past few days, and that's seriously pissing me off. One of the major problems being that because this particular grouping of people is so completely clueless and worthless, hardly anyone in my profession pays any attention to them -- and because no one is paying attention, they might actually get some lobbying done that will screw us in the long run.

That, and I'm generally fairly irate when I'm in this much pain.

I just sent you a shout at the Pub and you were here. Well hugs anyway.

(Fly, I also wished you a happy belated anniversary somewhere around here...)

CK, pain makes cranky alla time as I'm sure you know. It's just heaping coals on the fire when stoopid sh*t makes itself felt on top of it. The brainless are at the core of most of the working world's ills. I hope this irons itself out to the best of its ability without capsizing on you. You're too pretty to capsize.

Is the flare up keeping an even keel at least, or is it tending toward major?

Hey JQ. You shouted at me in the Pub? Bah? I've only ever posted in the Pub once, and I don't think anyone even noticed... (Or maybe you mean Mavs or HK? I will admit that we're a bit like the Fates -- I don't know if I'm the spinner, the weaver, or the cutter, though -- but we do each have our very own bad days.)

The pain does make me cranky, that's for sure. I'm able to handle up to a 5 (on a scale of 10, with 8 being crying from the pain, 9 being screaming, 10 being shock or passing out) with a clear head most days, but we've definitely surpassed a 5 today. And the pain with breathing is really messing with me.

It's difficult to see which way a flare is moving while I'm in the middle of it. The health journal helps, since I can start to see the long-term patterns. This one didn't start out like my big flares have, with a fever over 100°, so I'm hoping it won't get too bad. But it doesn't seem to be getting better yet, either. Appointment with the new doctor in two days. Here's hoping I'll be able to drive myself.

Thanks for letting me bitch a bit, guys. It really does help. I luvs you all!

Honestly, I don't know how you do it. My tolerance level for things that don't work like they're supposed to--including my own body, after the panic subsides--is next to nil. I admire you for being able not only to stand it all, but to keep your wit and wits about you, rages notwithstanding. I wouldn't off myself, but can easily picture myself going off in the woods to live by myself and enjoying my misery alone. *Big hugs*

Don't let the maybe interfere with the what's-happening-right-this-instant. Go out, have a good time, forget about later. If there's a later, it will come about of its own accord. If there's not a later, there could still be a later on. Let it happen, Joe. Don't think, just do.

Hey, I'm quite loopy right now, but I think I get what you're saying. Why are you worried about "later"? I will admit that I'm pretty aggressive when it comes to relationships -- I would rather have a flash-in-the-pan romance that ends in a painful explosion, than months of uncertainty and slow pain -- so I might not be the best person to listen to (plus, did I mention loopy?). But it might be worth it to examine what specifically you're worried about. What's the worse that happens if it comes up and you say yes? The worst if it comes up and you say no? If it doesn't come up at all? Answer those and then see how you feel. *Hugs*

Fear. Kinda dumb really. I've always loved her. She's always loves me. But the fear of losing each other is what kept anything from happening between us. We are not afraid anymore regardless of what happens. But I fear I may have fallen. There is always osmething really bad that happens when something good happens to me. I'm not sure what I am willing to trade for something this great, but I can say it is of infinate value. That is what scares me.

On the other hand I need to quit being such a puss and accept that this is my life and the happiness will not subside for anyone or anything.

Our relationship was on and off.

She liked to play a LOT of mind games, It was like the Joss Stone song "Snakes And Ladders".

For those of you who don't know, here are some of the lyrics:

99 1/2 it just won't do
You gotta give me all of you
Not asking too much of a heart that's true
So tell me...

Chorus
What's the name of the game that we are playing
But whenever I think that we are winning
Then you roll the dice take a slide
Right back to the one from 99

Is it gonna go on like this forever
Are we gonna to take that last step together
Going round and round and up and down
Feels just like snakes and ladders

Baby don't it feel like a carousel
Where all the world is rushing by
But when it stops you realize
That you're right back where you started at
I need a little more than that
It time for us to face the facts

Whether to be or not to be
That is the question so it seems
We're going nowhere in between
So tell me...

Chorus

Don't wanna play this game anymore
I gotta know right now for sure
What am I giving my heart for
Baby I need a little more
Don't leave me hanging on a string
Now that I gave you everything

Still I don't see him becoming a fanboy of anything.

Now I'm all curious.

Oh fine, make me explain while avoiding specifics...

(Had to re-write this. Fell asleep reading a Tim Powers novel and woke up writing oddly, heh.)

PhDs can be fans of lots of things, both pop culture things and otherwise. The degree itself is usually focused on a very specific area, so the person who got the PhD could be called a fan of that specific area, ie, someone with a PhD in Film Studies (if there is such a thing) could very well be a film-nut. From what I understand, as someone who decided against getting a PhD, PhDs tend to do a lot of reading, studying, and pondering, and after they are awarded their PhD, that studying may branch out into related topics, and they could potentially become a fanboy of those topics as well.

But here's the thing: with the exception of some sciences, every single thing a PhD could study was created by someone else. In the above example of Film Studies, the PhD didn't create the films he studies, he simply studies someone else's work. That was what made me decide against a PhD: down one career path I could create things, and down the other I could study and write about the creations of others. By nature I am a creator. I can't stand to go 24 hours without creating something, whether that's knitting or writing, or the creating I do for work. I get fidgety if I don't.

I don't have any problem with PhDs per se (and this was the confusing and offensive bit that led me to leave all this out earlier). I have worked directly with several people who after getting their PhDs moved into a creation role, and I certainly don't hold their education against them. I have also worked indirectly with PhDs whose research has produced either something tangible which aids the creation process, or some bit of knowledge that advances the state of the art of creation.

What I have a problem with are PhDs who write, research, and/or teach, and who have never created anything on their own in their entire careers, telling those of us who create every single day how we should go about our creating. In their opinion, we should listen to them, The Big Brains With The Big Degrees, because we are lesser, obviously stupider because of our lack of education. Research that helps the creator understand his art is one thing. Jumping up and down and saying "listen to me, I have a *doctorate*!!" is something else entirely.

Getting into my line of work is a cut-throat business, and only those who can hack it make it in the long run. I'm not saying that to sound better than the PhDs, but because it's the truth. If they think they could do a better job than me and my colleagues, they should give it a shot. Most wouldn't last a week. Hardly any would last a year, but those who did could have a career in it, if they could continue to hack it, continue to be better than everyone else gunning for their job, every single day until they retire. That's the job. And if they can't do it, they need to shut the up.

Edit: Was just looking at my profile, and realized that today is the 1 year anniversary of when I joined FFF.net! It seems like way more than a year, heh.

Hi CK. *waves above her*

Sorry I don't have the brain wattage to read what you've written about PhDs.

I had a 1 hour phone interview with a local company that is rapidly expanding and needs people yesterday. Sounds extremely promising - and puts me more at ease about the job interview (that in comparison, I really don't want despite the buckets of money). I think I'd prefer to work at the second company. Much more laid back.

(And sorry to hear about your ex-girlfriend, Zero)

Morning, Coolerites.

What a difference a few hours makes. The anguish of waiting for that gorramn phone to ring has been replaced by a nausea in the pit of my stomach at this upcoming (3 hours from now) job interview. And of course, it is in downtown DC, and it is expected to be about 95 degrees and humid today. . I'm going to be wilted by the time I get there.

My stomach is in such a knot I've had to stop drinking my One True Love, and switch to Iced Tea.

I'm a tad nervous!

But we wants the specificses. Bah I'll just guess at what they want you to do and if I'm right then tell them to cram it.

The thing I'm thinking of so is not an issue. Yet I see plenty of articles out there trying to make it an issue. How's that for avoiding specifics?

Now that everyone's confused...how's everyone else's day going? Mine's going sleepily.

Good luck at the interview Mavs. Just be honest and confident. That's what always seems to work for me. Which is usually the way I act in an interview for a job I don't really want. It's the ones I want that get me all nervous and trying to make myself sound super awesome.

My stomach is in such a knot I've had to stop drinking my One True Love, and switch to Iced Tea.

I'm a tad nervous!

Eh, I've said as much as I can. It's a fine line to walk, but I signed the NDA and I value my job. And it isn't so much the specific things that the PhDs want us to do, it's their constant, constant harping on the issue that gets to me -- along with this new escalation of inserting themselves into our work by making themselves the de facto lobbying group for my profession, despite the fact that none of them have worked a day in this industry. But I finally managed to put together a post that was both civil and sharp, and just sent that out, so maybe that will move this thing somehow. And if not, I'm starting to organize a lobby group made up of real professionals, which would make these guys look like the bloated jokes they are. So there's still hope.

*Hugs*, Mav. I am quite confident that everything will work out for you. HK had a good meeting with the boss, I just put the smack down on teh n00bs, and I'm betting that you'll find the perfect Goldilocks job -- not too much, not too little. If not either of these two jobs, then the next one will be just right. I'll be thinking good thoughts in your direction all day. *Hugs*

NDA & lobbying? I thought lobbying was a very public activity. Or is this non-governmental lobbying of some kind?

Reposted from the bar:

Well, I went in there Zen, and came out discombobulated and realized I wasted a morning.

I Metro downtown in this blazing heat, walk a few blocks to the building and everything is good. I am a few minutes early when I arrive at the reception desk. They ask me to fill out some forms, which I do. Yada, yada - I sit down with the interviewer. (Picture in your head a 50-60 y.o. woman, very thin, straight gray hair cut in a pageboy, with her glasses pushed up as a headband.)

I have now been there about 6 minutes.

She shuffles the papers around, looks at my resume very briefly, and asks me what I made at my last job. She asks me if I have a car (Illegal question, b*tch!). She asks me one or two other things, then as she shuffles papers asks where my test scores are. (Now, I had been under the impression the woman who contacted me was going to forward to my email some sort of test on MS Office / Powerpoint/Excel. It never appeared, only a confirmation email for my interview, so I assumed it would be administered at the interview.) The woman throws up her hands and proceeds to yell at a woman "Beth" in the room for about 30 seconds. Then she turns to me and says "Thanks for coming. I can't determine if you are suitable without those scores." and she gets up and leaves. And then to drive the knife home, as she walks out of the room she said "Pretty hair, though."

I've been there maybe 7 minutes. Interview is over.

Beth comes over and apologizes for me not receiving the email from her, and for the woman (I never did get her name) - She promises to send me the email (which is now in my email box) and asks me to call her this afternoon both when I get home, and when I've completed the testing.

I had been so worried about this interview, and I am a more competent office professional than those two combined. Figures.

I haven't decided whether I'm going to take the test or not.

You hit the nail on the head with PhDs - generally only important to themselves, they are. I really enjoyed your post.

That, and you know Python. You're making me fall in love with you.

Take the test.
Take the interview.
Get offered the job.

Man Zeek, you're making me do some seriously creative editing here, lol.

My work is all under NDA. I've done both government and private sector work, but I can't say more than that. Almost all work done by people with my job description is private sector. We don't have a lobbying group as yet, because we don't really need one. We have a loose professional association that speaks up if a politician tries to pass a law that would hurt our industry, but that's about it. But these academics, after being told that no, we won't let them view our work that is under NDA, and no, they can't jump to the top of the food chain by virtue of their PhDs, are now saying that they will put together a platform of the industry's needs and take those to politicians, on our behalf. Not only do they have no right to do that, their idea of "the industry's needs" are beyond laughable. So if they actually send out that platform, I'll have to do something to counter-act it.

Gah, sorry to be so vague, but it's necessary. We could just drop it now. I was pissed, I vented, and now I've put the smack down on the academics. Let's just forgot I brought it up.
