From tvguide.com:

"GO-TO GUY: It's official: 20th Century Fox TV is producing at least 22 new episodes of Family Guy, which, thanks to cable reruns and DVD, has turned into a cult phenomenon since its cancellation two years ago. According to Variety, Cartoon Network has signed on to air the fresh segments, although Fox can exercise an option to broadcast them first."

As far as I know, this is a first for a show that has been cancelled for so long. Hopefully, after the movie does well this'll help a network in their decision to revive Firefly the series.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Can't wait to see this same announcement for Firefly, sans the part about Fox exercising any option to air the new episodes first.

Good news for Family Guy though. I did like that show while it was on the air.

Why is every one assuming that Firefly's going to come back to TV if the movie does well?

If the movie does well you know what we're going to get? Another movie!

I know Joss has always said that he was into TV because the writer is God were as in movies the writer is a pimple on God's ass. (Clearly not a quote).

But Joss is a movie director now - I'd be amazed if we ever see proper TV show from him again - I'd say if we get any at all they'll be in the Jim Cameron, Dark Angel kind of way - or at the most they'd be run like Buffy season's 5 to 7 (i.e. Bad Buffy).

I remember reading that Joss rewrote the Firefly movie to be more of a "series springboard". they WANT it back on cable, not movies (though it's not a bad deal).

Could be because the original news release about the movie stated that Universal had Joss rewrite the script so it would act as a "springboard" into a TV series.

Perhaps, but I think Universal is looking for a TV series as well. Keep in mind they own Sci Fi Channel. With Stargate SG1 ending its run in 2005, Farscape off the air, and not much else going on over there, they will be looking for a show to draw the fans. Firefly will do that. A successful movie will mean Universal invests the money to get Serenity on the small screen again.

I wouldn't bet on that. Firefly is Joss's baby. He loves this show, and has fought his tail off to get it back on TV, then failing that, got it done up as a movie. I think the man can work miracles.

Sure Joss loves this show - but it's not a TV show any more - it's a movie now. Could it go the Stargate SG1 route? Of course - but I think that it's more likely that Universal will try and turn out a movie franchise over a TV one (don't Fox still hold the TV rights?).

It really is down to what Joss wants - and there's a pretty big part of me that thinks that, for the sake of his career and his creativity, he'll jump at the chance to make movies as a director that he never could have made properly when he was just a screenplay writer.

Besides his own ideas that he's been sitting on there will be companies looking to hire him for their projects (Remember Ironman any one?)

And so we're back to the situation of Joss setting up Firefly mark 2 - and leaving a Marti Noxon type to run things, which he will believe is the right thing to do.

I'd prefare a Firefly TV franchise over a movie one - but I'll take what I can get and I'm looking forward to the new career of my favourite TV writer/director.

Not sure I agree w/ which way you think Joss will take Firefly and his career will go. Guess we will have to agree to disagree.

I do agree w/ you there. I would prefer TV episodes to movies, but I will take any Firefly that Joss & cast are willing to give us.
