You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

I resent the implication that I have "clearly not seen enough SF in film and/or is a very, very devout member of the Church of Whedon" as I have been a fan of Sci-Fi for at least a decade (that's half my life, folks!) and only became a member of the "Church of Whedon" after I saw Serenity. Which is of course the best sci-fi movie ever!
A lot of people saying it's not the best, but the "most entertaining". That seems odd, since there was much more depth to it than flash-and-glitter entertainment value.

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

I noticed the entertainment value in the thread, too (I clearly have not read enough of the thread...).

When I first saw Serenity (having no idea what Firefly was at the time) I was enourmously entertained. I reveled in the characters having such depth individually and such obvious history/chemistry as a group. I've said this before and it still holds true for me: Serenity brought to the screen what the first half of the Star Wars trilogy (which is actually the second half, right? I can never get that straight...) promised to be.

Why our BDH's never caught on to the wider, mass appeal audience, I'll never know. I'll never understand why the Fantastic Four has never resonated with the same appeal of Spider-Man or the X-Men(movies or comic books). It just reminds me, which is the original intent of the poser I think--ill-chosen though his/her examples might be--that we are the FEW and the proud. We are the Mouse that Roared in the big scheme of things. We might not notice it because it is so near & dear and Big to us.

I still ain't about to become a membera no church...

Isn't that what makes a good movie, though?
I didn't know what Firefly was yet either, but I was dragged into the 'verse by Serenity before I even knew what had happened.

Nobody hurt me, but I agree with those who rank Blade Runner above Serenity, as a movie. I loved Serenity, don't get me wrong, and it got me into Firefly, but it's Firefly that I think is worthy of resurrection, Serenity, on it's own (while excellent) is possibly not *as* sequel-worthy.

*Looks around nervously*

This is looking like the 'to arms' thread now.

Don't hurt me.

Please.

I have a Katana and two flatmates to support!

Well, cook for...

Maybe not the katana.

But it needs shinied!

They may think their sins are original, but for the most part they are petty and repetitive.

Plus she can cut veggies for the flatmates' meals.

You cannot imagination the excitement and elation (maybe you can) when I found out there was a series behind it. Was? Oh, yes, the frustration and anger, too...But no, we're not inclined to kill over such blasphemy (darn, and I was gonna get me an ear, too...). You are not alone. Just outnumbered.

Yeah, well, we're known for that.

I'm another Browncoat who fits neither category. I've been a S/F reader for a good 45 years (and that's a deal more than half my life, thanks!). I am not in any church, and specifically not that of Whedon. I watched Firefly from Day One but was never a Buffy or Angel fan or viewer.

I still can't figure how Serenity only places 49th on the Rotten Tomatoes ranking of S/F movies, below many films I don't even consider to be science fiction at all. I mean, really... "Bride of Frankenstein"?

And there I can't argue with you, because I haven't seen Blade Runner. Even if I had, you're entitled to your opinion. I can't imagine liking any movie more than Serenity, but there have been times in the past where I've said that about other movies (The X-files: Fight the Future and the Matrix both come to mind) so it would be silly of me to say I can't be swayed by a good film. Of course, I seriously doubt Serenity/Firefly will jump the shark as so many others have (likely won't ever get the chance to, and from what I've seen of the other fandoms Joss doesn't seem to have that pattern) so it'll never be 'cheapened' for me, but hey new stuff is coming along all the time...

I dunno, looks pretty SciFi to me:

Strictly speaking it's not a horror movie. It's SciFi Dystopia, told from a Gothic Horror perspective. Likewise "Alien" is more of a horror movie than it is SciFi...

I have never heard of this scalzi.com and therefore do not give a load of crap what is written there.

Perhaps the fans of this website (scalzi)are not vocal enough?

hmmmmmmmmm

And Blade Runner sucked! Like completely! Complete and total suckage on the suck meter.

But that is just my opnion.

You know, I've always thought of Sci-Fi as more of a theme then a genre, so many of the best skyfi's are very clearly horror, or comedy, or some other genre, always felt that the best are those that make the most of this.

Tombstone, The Outlaw Josey Wales, Unforgiven, and of course the 'dollars' trilogy.

Now I'm not much of a John Wayne fan, but the above are some damn good films, and, sorta western-ish really xD

BROWNCOAT1

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Scalzi.com is the site for author John Scalzi, who reportedly (from a browncoat on this site) is supposed to be a fan of Firefly / Serenity. Check out this thread:

http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=28456

Notice I did not say "browncoat". I held off on referring to Mr Scalzi as a browncoat since his discussion topic on his site would lead us to believe that perhaps he is not all that big a fan afterall. Makes one wonder.....

...yes, of course, we understand...flatmates and a katana (whatever a katana is)...

I knew I wouldn't have to lurk this thread long before I'd spot a post to which I could reply "Yeah - what he/she said!" (Thanks, Oddsbodskins ) I haven't seen Bladerunner - in it's entirety and me unimpaired - since 1982...but I do remember it as being a damn fine movie. My first viewing(s) of Serenity is a good deal more recent - bought it 3-4 months ago and watched it 2x back-to-back, and will likely watch it again at least once before the summer's out. It, too, is a damn fine movie, and worthy of all men, women, and Browncoats to be received. As far as one being better than the other...well, it may just be my advancing years and the early onset of senility, but, particularly after reading Odds' other post about sci-fi as theme rather than genre, I think the 2 movies - for all I think they're both part of the sci-fi wossname - are too dissimilar in other respects to be usefully compared on a "A < or > B" basis.

Firefly is da undisputed shit, I do agree. Took me a few viewings over a few months to get utterly hooked, but that's just 'cause I'm a little slow on the uptake sometimes. If the series were to go back into production, that would indeed be cause for some shoutin' and secretin' (I'd shout and secrete for a Serenity sequel, too...just maybe a little bit less )

Well, there's been a fair bit of confusion caused by the fact that the name of each poster is separated by a line at the bottom of each message, so a couple of folks (I was almost another one) misattributed a FF-hostile post to the person above.

For a minute there, I thought it was Scalzi himself ripping into us, until I realized what was up with the layout.
