Before I launch into this, we're not done counting receipts yet. A couple of the CSTS markets don't yet know how much money they've raised, due to theatres' accounting, and other obstacles. That said, being able to make this little statement early with money left to be counted is a real treat.

A lot can happen in ten months.

You can get married.
You can take the reins of a global charity event.
You can make friends with a writer you've held in high regard for years.

You can make a difference.

The primary reason I asked to take the helm of the 2007 Can't Stop The Serenity events was simple: I wanted to make a difference. I believe in the power of the Browncoat community to affect positive change in the world, and wanted to help out in any way I could.

This morning, we've announced meeting the stated goal of raising over $100,000 (usd) globally for Equality Now. For those who like to crunch numbers (like me), that means we raised fifty percent more money than we did in 2006, with fewer screening sites.

A big reason we were able to pull this off is the great design from Adam Levermore-Rich ( http://BlackMarketBeagles.com). The t-shirts and posters created using his design were irresistible, and became a really hot commodity. That's why I'm happy to report that Adam has agreed to provide a design for the 2008 events, which we'll be rolling out into the public eye around January 2008.

Each organizer has a wonderful story to tell about their event: the couple who got engaged; the birthday celebrated on another continent; the Big Damn Hero who came out in her hometown to introduce the screening. We'll have those stories up at CantStopTheSerenity.com in the next weeks.

We already have a few markets that are talking about holding CSTS events in 2008. And keep your ears to the ground for a special, non-June screening in the works.

Someone remarked in June that The One True B!X and I belonged to a really exclusive club. Ain't that the truth. I'm truly grateful for the experience of working for the organizers in 2007 -- it's an experience I'll cherish for a lifetime.

Someone else gets to join that club in 2008.

Later today, we'll be asking for bids to organize the 2008 Can't Stop The Serenity global events. While I will continue to work with CSTS in any capacity asked (and organizing the North Texas event for a third year), I'll be handing over the keys to someone else. There will be more details coming, but it makes sense for a lot of different reasons.

This has been one wild and amazing year. With every fiber of my being, thank you.

OUT2THEBLACK

Great News about 'A Job' Well Done !

At the urging of the Independent Spaceborne Forces , Browncoat film and entertainment media composer Austin Wintory created a tune called :

'Browncoats Rising'.

First listen went to Browncoat Astronaut Steve 'Swanny' Swanson , and the crew of
STS-117 !

In celebration of all the great folk who work to keep us in the spotlight , while doing 'good works' , we're inviting the wider world to visit Austin's website and give this tune a listen . Do some browsing while you're there , and hear some of his other works , too .

Austin promises more Browncoat compositions in the future !

REDHEAD

Devin,

An excellent fund raising job! I am proud to be a Browncoat because of you and the Can't Stop the Serenity Screenings. Before Firefly, I had been a little bemused by the thought of any grownup actually being a fan of anything. When I fell in love with the series, I slipped online like a pedophile but when I discovered the amazing work Browncoats did for Equality Now, I realized that fan was not synonymous with airhead. I realized that many fans use the passion that the show gives them to create new works and, most especially, to pass around a little good in this world. Thanks to you and all the volunteers this year and to The One True b!x who made the idea run last year.

Out2theblack,
I enjoyed Wintory's piece. I loved the mix of the big western sound and then the sweetness of the flute which added the clarity of the stars.
