Jayne Cobb is portrayed as being unnaturally strong. It is also mentioned more than once in the series that he is unnaturally heavy. i.e. In "The Train Job" the crew CAN'T move him from the bridge to the med lab. It would seem that he is unnaturally dense!
But I guess we knew that.
The boy has got to be on some kind of futuristic steroids! Or "Space-roids" if you prefer.

Am I alone in thinking along these lines?

i dont think jayne is on any "sproids" i just think its a mix of his huge muscle mass (which he got from just lifting alot of weights alot of the time) and his skull

Nope you are alone in this! Lol.

Where would Jayne get the coin to buy these 'roids? Why haven't we seen him go into bits or 'roid rage?

Cuz he got his body the natural way- good Genes and lots of weights

and the fact that he eats so gorram much doesn't help.

Yeah, he's just a really huge guy. If you ever tried to carry that much dead weight, I'm betting you couldn't move it very far either.

But a normal man Jayne's size couldn't be that much over 200 pounds. Should be able to be carried by Book and another one of the guys fairly easily. (Even if he was 250 lbs. and Adam Baldwin's not that heavy I wouldn't think.)

But hey, I've been wrong before.

I don't remember anything saying he was unnaturally heavy or strong.

And the crew had other more important things to do than move him to the infirmary at that specific time.

I have wondered before whether he grew up on a planet with a slighlty heavier gravity than Earth norm. Would give him a head start on all those lovely muscles!

^thats a pretty good theory, even terraforming cant fix gravity

Jayne's size? You mean 6'4", broad, covered in muscle, plus a little layer of fat? He could easily weigh more than 200 pounds. Even if he didn't, I'll say again, that much dead weight is hardly anything to sneeze at. One member of the crew could not move it, and two members would need a stretcher and a few breaks to move it any kind of distance.
I'll have to ask my stepdad, who's slightly shorter but of a similar build, how much he weighs. I'm quite sure he was about 230 at the height of his fitness, and at the height of his fitness he had less fat on him than Jayne seems to have, so I would think Jayne could be 250 or more without stretching the imagination too much.
And actually, there are several references to gravity regulation in the terraforming. Maybe there was a quirk and it was slightly higher on the world Jayne came from, but then I have to think he wouldn't have grown nearly as tall.

Yeah, PR is right he could easily be that heavy. Also physical looks are not always a good guide to weight. I'm on the slightly chubby side but people constantly underestimate my weight due to my height, (no they are not just being polite), even here on Earth people's skeletal mass and muscle distribution can vary even with people who look similar.

Out of curiosity, does it say anywhere how they modify the gravity when terraforming? As Gravity is down to mass the only way I can see for them to do it is to either take away mass from the interior of a planet or add heavier elements in very large quantities.

I checked and even when he was extremely fit (I think his body fat was 4% or something) my stepdad weighed 225, so someone a few inches taller than him would definitely be... difficult to haul around. Even someone his size would have difficulty hauling someone his size around if they were passed out.

No, there's never specific mention of what they do aside from "gravity regulation". Firefly has always been kind of light on the 'science' part of the science fiction.

KAYNA

I love my captain

Plus, a human being is an awkward size and shape to be carrying. My high school had some weighted, life size dummies (not sure why) and believe me, they were real difficult to move around, even for the muscle bound types. And don't bother with how much Book can bench press. There's a difference between pushing a couple hunred pounds up and down and trying to haul it around without dropping it.

Besides the fact that Jayne would honestly be heavy, keep in mind the humor involved in the scene. Dude was lying on the stairs half looped. The reason, Kaylee *whines* that he was heavy as if he were a crate of parts as opposed to a man.

If he weren't *whine* heeeeeaaaaavy he wouldn't be crumpled on the stairs being all drugged and funny . . . and he wouldn't have been able to save mal with his half looped shootin'.

I don't think Kaylee calling him heavy was too terribly deep.

Likely the exagerated reaction of an old (in shape, but still old) man hit but the awkward dead weight of a 230-ish pound man with heavy clothes and equipment in the bargain....

Also, muscle tissue has a higher density than fat. It weighs more... hence the solid ton. It's just confirmation that Jayne's bulk really is predominantly muscle.

In the "Serenity" movie during the heist Jayne clotheslines a guy so hard he flips completely upside down and then catches him by the feet...
When something that seemingly silly happens I look for an explanation. The crew talking about Jayne being so heavy was my in to explaining that kind of strength.
Gravity is a good theory too, I like that. You might end up with very dense muscle mass in that situation.

so does my 6 year old brother, that doesn't make him unusually heavy for his size.

I remember once, we were on vacation and me and my brother had to share a bed, and sort of sat up in the night and flopped back down across my ribcage my exact thought was "this boy weighs a solid ton"

I seem to have ramble on a bit, but my point was the phrase "a solid ton" is extremely relative to the situation in which it is used. like for instance having 220+ lbs. of solid JAYNE dropped into your arms and having to haul his bulk half-way around the ship, or having my 6 year old brother draped across you ribcage in the middle of the night.

Why is the rum always gone?

I like this guy's explanation:

Quote:

Jayne’s fighting style mirrors his direct and brutish nature. In Serenity’s bar fight, an anonymous patron takes a swing at Jayne, who, annoyed, blocks and then executes a visceral hammerfist to the crown of the head, all without missing a beat. The instinctual choice of such an inefficient technique emphasizes that Jayne’s fighting style owes more to brute force than precision training, since a targeted blow would have required less force while delivering the same result (1). In “The Train Job” episode, Jayne again eschews formal technique, opting instead to explode out of the saloon swinging a large metal stool at those unfortunate enough to be in his path. Direct, effective, and very much in character.

Jayne is not a completely one-dimensional character, however, for it is his sly humor (and his love for his momma) that endears him to the viewer. When describing how he would kill a man “in a fair fight…or if I thought he was going to start a fair fight,” his glance and subtle grin muster a likable charm that tempers his otherwise offensive demeanor. That whimsical side is mirrored in Jayne’s fight in Serenity’s payroll robbery. As a guard bursts into action, Jayne clotheslines the guard as he runs past, then, as the guard rotates in midair from the force of the clothesline, Jayne grabs him by the ankles and bashes his head into the floor, rendering him hors de combat. The movements are executed through sheer power, from the initial clothesline to lifting the guard by his ankles, but Jayne’s humor slips through because of the patent absurdity of the gravity-defying technique.

(I added the bold.)

Now you're getting a bit literal .

Jayne ain't a literal 'boy' , either , and Book's comment was an exclamatory observation...Wasn't intended by the Shepherd to be anything else...

Most folk here seem to get that already...But it has been previously pointed out that muscle is more DENSE than fat , etc .

I believe this thread was intended as just good fun . That's really all it should be...

But a normal brain contains a lot of fat , fatty proteins to be well , literal .

Some folk tend to lean toward muscle-headedness , more than others , though...
