or an old folkie, anyway.

Tommy Makem, the Irish folk singer, of the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, died the other day, an old man , of an old man's illness.

I went looking him up on YouTube, and there's a lot of his music there, sad music, sentimental music, Irish music, old folk songs, drinking songs, love songs, funny songs, songs about fighting and pretty girls.

And I was surprised how much of his music was part of my childhood and my years as a young man, tho' I'm only an American with 1 Irish grandparent.

look him up if ya get a chance.

May he rest in Peace, and in some of the Beauty he brought to this World...

old folkies are the new rock-a-billys.....no? ok

yeah, saw Tommy's obit in the Dallas Morning news today - the guy could make the place puddle up that's for sure -

a young Bobby Dylan knew and listend to the Clancys and said that "Topical songs weren't protest songs...as much as rebellion songs..."

i suppose there is a difference.

BTW being an old folkie - how much did you appreciate (and laugh at) A Mighty Wind - Christopher Guests great folk music parody??

almost as good as Spinal Tap

I flat-out *L*O*V*E*D* A Mighty Wind. And ya know the funny thing? The songs from the movie, even with their satirical and parodying intent, are so correct that some of them would be worth singing.
And now ya got me thinking about it, gonna hafta dig out my DVD and look at it again over the weekend.

You don't havta be old to appreciate good Irish music(we're early thirtiesish, or is that old now?).. Me 'usband and I love to turn on the Celtic Radio Music Hour on at 8 o'clock Saturday nights (we sometimes will get up and stomp around with the little 'un!). I'm sure the host will have a word or two to say about Tommy's passing, so I'll be sure to tune in ...

Ok, just finished the program, and while the music was exceptionally good tonight, there was not a peep about Mr. Makem (although sometimes I think they play pre-recorded radio shows)
Oh well. I'll drink a toast of Wild Irish Rose to 'em anyway!(I'm out of Bailey's)

I read somewhere that when the Mighty Wind
guys took the stage to open for Spinal Tap
(concert date and venue not mentioned) there
were many in the audience who had come for
Spinal Tap, objected to the folkies, and got
really hostile, not knowing it was the same
group.

I would be very surprised if that reaction isn't exactly what they expected and wanted.

I once attended a concert that had Taj Mahal opening for Foghat. Taj came out on stage and tried to play, and the stadium full of rockers jeered him off the stage. Since my friends and I had driven 80 miles mostly to see Taj, we were a mite perturbed.

(Off the point, but when Foghat came on and tried to play, the power blew out. Tried three times, no go. The whole show was canceled.

Worst. Concert. Ever.)

I'm pointin' right at it!

Worst. Concert. Ever? Awwww, poor DonCoat.

Probably the oddest combination we ever saw was The Rubber City Rebels opening for The Knack. Lots of fun, both of them. Worth the 90 miles!
And no power failure, thank heaven.

As for our friends the Tapsters, they are clever
devils we can count on for fun, and who knows what they expect to happen?
