SCHOOLBOYSWINK

I got my wife to watch Firefly! Just Serenity and the Train Job so far, but I think it is starting to get under her skin a little bit. She has a short attention span when it comes to watching TV, so she usually works on another project at the same time and mostly listens. I made sure she saw Mal kiss the cross around his neck in the battle, since I think it is critical to our understanding of Mal NOW to know that once upon a time he used to be a man of great faith. (Not only in God, but that belief represents the faith he used to have in everything, in himself, his cause, in the inherent tendency of the Universe to turn out for "right.") It is important for us to understand that this faith is something he lost, not just something he never had to begin with, and there are very few other clues througout the show to that "former Mal."

Anyway, I made sure she caught that, but after that I told her she was on her own, and I caught her looking up more and more often as the show progressed. She was absorbed enough in Serenity that she didn't even realize it was double length. When it cuts into the cockpit the first time and shows Wash playing with the dinosaurs (Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!), she pretty much lost it. I think that was the moment when she figured out I wasn't just dragging her through another same-ole' same-ole' sci-fi show. She was also fortunate enough to be looking up when Simon gives River an injection and she sticks her tongue out at him.

Anyway, thanks all for your suggestions. I borrowed numerous of them in subtley altered ways that I thought would work on her. Apparently it was effective.

More YAY!

I got my daughter hooked on Firefly slowly but surely too. By the time she got to "War Stories" she was hooked fully.

She's a doer not a sitter...but how could she resist?

SBW, I enjoy your insight into Mal and our beloved show, it's always a pleasure to read your posts.

TRAVELER

One of our honcho engineers walked up to my station and recognised Jayne as my background on the screen. He can not believe a movie was made from a TV show that only lasted ten episodes. I told him to get the set and see how great it is.

So I hope I have planted a seed.
