*ahem* Not sure how to start this post, but here goes...anyone notice that from the side Serenity looks like...a...ummm...penis?

I hope I'm not the only one, because my wife and I laughed out loud when we first saw it in the first episode. I paused the Tivo and asked "What the ? What does that look like?"

Not until you said something!

Seriously though, I thought it looked more like a bird. Its got a beak and everything.

You must have the world's most seriously deformed/mutilated one ever, for there to be any resemblance at all.

Well, hey, it's traditional. Check this out.

This one (below), believe it or not, is from an elementary school site!

Of course, starting with Star Trek, priapic imagry sort of disappeared from space fiction. (That, along with the Eunuch Look on TNG, was the big appeal to our friends at Heaven's Gate:

Trust Joss Whedon to restore tradition, and return space fiction to its, uhm, roots!

JOSS, WHERE'S MY CHECK???!!!

Well, officially, that angled thingee is supposed to make Serenity look like a Firefly Beetle, even when the aft end isn't glowing.

But yeah, you look at it from the correct angle, and the ship looks like, you know.

I saw it straight off. I didn't say anything, because, well, people might think...

I see the bird thing. I see the beetle thing. But this penis thing... that's a stretch.

My 2 cents.

A stretch!? Look at the picture just above. If that isn't phalic, I don't know what is.

Remember the launch of the Phœnix in First Contact? Just a plain old cylinder, thrusting straight up out of the ground, with a bulging semi-conical section on top just a bit wider at its base than the rest of the rocket. That was the most precise non-statue recreation of a penis I've ever seen other than a giant balloon sticking out of a window of a car parked at a sorority house.

OK, now that you posted that picture, I can stretch my imagination to make this work as long as we're only talking about PART of the ship, not just THE SHIP... but I'd still be mighty upset if mine really looked much like that. It not only looks out of proportion, but just too sharply angular.

That's probably an innocent coincidence. The Phoenix was supposed to be an adapted ICBM, after all. (Suddenly I'm struck with the imagery President Kennedy and Premier Kruschev pointing thousands of phallic ICBMs at each other. "Mine's bigger than yours!" Oh dear.) If Rick Berman, who has the creative courage of a cockroach, had noticed this, he would have insisted on something less, uh, you know.

In contrast, Joss Whedon loves a sly, subtle joke, and probably did his Freudian space ship on purpose. And even if he didn't, he'll certainly insist that he did!

Yeah, you're right. But it's close enough to make you laugh, isn't it?

And I'm pretty sure the South Park movie had at least one flying penis.

Very cute. But it doesn't explain Xander Harris's erotic fixation on linoleum!
