what do we know about ships in the same class as Serenity?

Just re-watched Out of Gas and it got me thinking - Serenity's past is as rich for exploration as any other character in F/F

i read what i can but i realise there may be a heap of technical or creative lowdown on her that i'm missing...

show the old folk what the noobs can do!

I figure that Serenity was like lots of mass produced, easily fixed, utilitarian transport of any age. Think the Conestoga wagon, Model T, DC-3 etc.

Each one the carbon copy of the other but then made unique by their owners and with many many tales to tell. Why don't you use your imagination and produce some "Tales of Serentiy" for us to read.

BTW The RPG book has a lot of physical details and QMX has produced limited edition blueprints. I think someone posted them in the Blue Sun room.

Important people don't do field work.

In the pilot, the Alliance officer in charge of the IAV Dortmunder states that there are 40,000 Fireflies still in operation.

Beyond that, we know that the frame was around for some time given that Book says he flew in one long before Kaylee was crawling, and that he's never flown in an '03 with the extenders, which would point to what model of Firefly Serenity is. Also, there must have been a newer model or models, as Doug Savant says in "Bushwhacked" that Serenity is an "older model", and how they're prefered for smuggling.

That's about all I know off the top of my head.

Kaylee: "What's so damn important about being proper? It don't mean nothing out here in the black."
Simon: "It means more out here. It's all I have..."

cheers!

yeh - the idea of older models and different models made me doubt that the 40,000 number was strictly true... but hmmm... my cogs are turning in my brain now...

TRAVELER

As I watched the series I began to see Serenity as a magnet. I'm being believe she pulled people to her. I guess when I saw "Out of Gas" and how Mal responded to seeing Seneity for the first time. Then there was Book who was drawn to her in the primier episode. Was it just luck that Simon picked the one ship whose crew would be sympathetic to his and River's danger.

I wonder what other owners might have been like and what causes they took on.

Joss does call Serenity one of the characters in the show.

yeh... touching right on the some of the issues i'm thinking about... i may well use another ship/another crew to explore potential answers.

40/000 and then just the one...
all them slayers and then just Fray.

Teaser:

Tranquility:

“You call this Tranquility?!”
The Shepherd peered through the chicken feathered air into the crowded loading bay. One hand instinctively wiped his coat free from the dust and droppings falling onto him, another blocked the attack of a straffing, squawking hen.
Raising his voice over the din of the livestock, he asked the question again.

The Captain laughed brightly, extending a hand. “Well the air may be kinda fowl -” she grinned, “but yes, yes i do.Welcome aboard.”

It wasn't 40,000 and then just the one. In "Bushwhacked" Doug Savant (again) says "40,000 of these wrecks still in the air..."

I imagine the 'verse is a pretty big place and as such, it would be easy to not see Fireflies all on top of one another.

Pez sure knows his tuff. He's right about the numbers quoted in the show. If you want info, I bet the RPG has all kinds of stuff on Fireflies and crews. I've read fics about possible crews. A concept ripe for exploration.

shameless plug for a fanfic of mine. I wrote a piece called A Swarm of Fireflies, and posted it in the Blue Sun Room. ( I dunno how to make a pointer to it, but you can get to it thru my profile, or probably by alphabetical search. It was a while ago, probably almost a year. ) About the notion of a convention of Firefly owners, much like those car meets of Old Chevy owners, etc. It sorta turned into a story about the convention in Burbank, and the Backup Bash. Not some of my best stuff, but there are a couple of other Fireflys in it, and it's a great notion- there are a lotta ships, and a lotta stories possible.

oh oh oh....
Do ya think River could do like a dead zone kinda thing and "see" the past inhabitants? That'd be shiny!

Plus, hubby said that in the rpg book (not cannon, but still thought provoking) they imply that Serenity might've been a med. transport ship at one time?

River would see some awful bloody stuff, though...

They can't even run their own lives, and I'll be d@mned if they'll run mine!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This thread is a tiny example of what's GREAT about this site - everyone chipping in and helping out (plus suggesting intersting avenues to explore, material to browse).

How can we stop Manwithpez leaving??

Iremist - i have a gifty for you soon.

NcBrowncoat - you rule!
