Now I am learning about scary.

This has been bugging me for a few weeks and I hope someone will have a helpful response.

I was watching the "Shuttlepod One" episode of "Star Trek: Enterprise" on SciFi a few weeks ago when I got a big surprise.

In one scene, the Armory Officer, whose name is Malcolm Reed, is having a dream that he's flirting with the Vulcan Science Officer, T'Pol. He confesses to her that he's never really liked his first name because it seems "stuffy." She responds that she likes it, because "Mol-Kom" is Vulcan for "serenity."

What?!

My S.O. tells me this episode first aired in Feb. 2002, so it couldn't have been a direct reference to "Firefly," but this seems like too much of a coincidence to be believed.

Can anyone provide me with any insight on this? I'd really appreciate it!

Google search did not provide any 'real' help.

This site:
http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Vulcan_language
notes that since it was a dream, it may not be a 'real' Vulcan term.

Someone else asked the same question in a blog...

No particularly helpful follow up.

It's a heck of a coincidence; might have been something Joss was not aware of, sub-conscious tie in? I'll put it in my pack of questions the next time I see Joss (which means probably never ;-) ).

Well, I guess I'm not very original, but I honestly hadn't seen the question raised before. It had occurred to me that Joss might have heard of it beforehand but he already had a good reason for using the name "Malcolm" ('Mal'), so I don't know.

Thanks for looking into it. Browncoats rule!

Good luck in getting to talk to Joss, and if you can ask him the question, that'd be great.

Until then, I'll just keep wondering.
