my report on gen con indy (which just happened); I'll try to keep it to the ff-related aspects.

ok, so the first night (before the actual day) I'm walking to dinner, wearing my jayne hat. on the way, someone compliments it; i didn't actually hear him, my friend pointed it out. so i kind of wave vaugely, and mutter a thank-you; the guy was a few steps behind by now, and i didn't want to delay my friends (i know, i know, lame excuse- you'll see what i mean in a minute).

so the next day, as soon as the exhibit hall opens, i march up to the autograph area, where sits, as advertised, Mark Shepherd (badger). no line to speak of (i felt kinda bad for him, both times i saw him there was either little or no line), so i walk up to him.....

...and he says, "hey, i told you 'nice hat' last night, and you just blew it off! what's that about?"

i cannot BELIEVE i did that!!
what the hell is wrong with me?

so i say something like, 'excuse me, i have to go find a hard surface to beat my head against'
anyway, he was really nice, i chatted for a minute and got a fair shiny autograph on a 7x10 of him as badger. came back the next day to get one for my friend, who couldn't go (i figured if i waited a day, i'd get to show off a different shirt).

also, he waved at me later that day as we passed in the hall, and i was pleased to not repeat my previous bungle.

that was the major ff-related story, i guess; i played a couple ff-RPG's, twas fun.

also, gamer-browncoats are friggin confusing;
there seemed to be a few fairly fanatic 'coats (i.e. costumes/jayne hats), but then there were ENDLESS hoardes of... i dunno, quasi-'coats? i mean, i'd see people wandering around in blue sun shirts, or the official ff/s shirts, but some of them gave my hat a very blank stare...
what gives? i guess i was just expecting all firefly fans to be, y'know, browncoats, all fanatic and such, but there seem to be just as many casual fans. who knew?

it was also really great finding 'coats via the hat who couldn't be otherwise identified; a guy dressed in bluejeans and a blank shirt told me my hat made me look like an idiot; he said it with a smile, so i assumed he was quoting.

i guess thats all; kinda turned out to be more of a rant then a report, but hey, thats me.

Poor Mark S. When you blew him off he must have thought you didn't know what kind of hat you were wearing.

The "idiot" line has to have been from a true 'coat.

Your hat was the only one there???

The guys in FF/S gear who don't recognize your hat can't be truly familiar with the series, though they could be big fans of the film.

I'd have hung out around Mark and asked a million questions if there wasn't a line...

Yep, he was quoting. That is the line the Fed lawman gives Jayne after the showdown in Serenity's cargo hold.
