Too bad the gorram fool doesn't get it. The Firefly theme song is one its' most enduring and beloved components.

Amen browncoat! Not the only thing I disagreed with though. The original BSG opening sequence? Pssh...how about the new one? And Trek? I see this as a trekkie and I like the original series but the original theme song is the worst of the entire franchise IMO. I'd replace that with TNG.

It's a hard call to make trying to judge shows from different generations. I grew up watching the original Battlestar & Buck Rogers....at the time, I can tell you that both show openings were awesome & exciting....looking back now on the DVDs, not so much. As for Star Trek, I agree with you, but I would go with the theme from Enterprise....has sort of a catchy, uplifting spirit to it.

Oh, and how could we forget Cleopatra 2525...the opening theme song sung so proudly by none other than Gina Torres...." In the year 2525, three women keep hope alive...."

And here's a rebuttal from John Brownlee at SciFi Scanner!!

Colors... Pretty has posted up a fairly decent list of the best and worst intros in sci-fi television. But one inclusion in their worst television intros really honks my hog: Firefly? Dubyoo Tee Eff, Interrobang!

I realize that the folksy crooning of the Firefly theme song isn't everyone's cup of tea. it's probably just as widely reviled as the Enterprise theme song. But there's a difference: Firefly's theme is not only good, but it serves a dramatic purpose.

The main theme of the song is the unconquerability of the spirit coupled with the sense of loss associated with exile from your home after military loss. In the thirty seconds of the intro, the whole show is explained: the music evokes the western genre, even though new viewers would surely come to it as a straight sci-fi show, and it perfectly explains not only the universe in which the characters live (in which they are voluntarily exiled from their homes after a failed rebellion that was ruthlessly quashed) but their indefatigable, restless spirits as well.

But more than that: it's a good song. Unless you have an irrational hatred of anything that smacks of instrumental country, it's hard to think of a song that is more perfect for Firefly's spirit of explorative loss. Would a hard rock theme really have been more appropriate?

Oh God, I couldn't disagree with you more. The Enterprise opening would be on my 5 worst list. The original is great because it's the original, although I do like the TNG theme better. I'd rank the ST openings as TOS,TNG,VOY,DS9..............ENT.

The rebuttal says it all. I LOVE this theme song. I usually skip past the theme songs when I watch shows on DVD, but Firefly I watch it every episode. (Except with my wife, who has little appreciation for theme songs in general.)

If I'm home by myself watching it, I will typically close my eyes and sing along, just immersing myself in it (Yeah, dopey, I know.); it just sums up a loss and yearning that I'd been feeling for years and could never put into words.

I always open my eyes for the last shot, though, of Serenity flying over the herd of horses (wild horses, I like to think). It just sums up the show with such a poignant visual; truly a picture worth a thousand words. Not only that, but horses and spaceships in the same view is what I hope Heaven is like for me.

I think the Buck Rogers opening being referred to is from the original pilot and not the one that would show at the beginning of each episode (at least, after watching the Youtube clip, not what I remember). Mute the sound while watching that clip and you're basically watching one of those late-night commercials for a "chat" line.
