RE: the movie only- Okay, this gorram release was EVERYTHING I was hoping for!

No, this is NOT the same as in the first release- it may be the same transfer, but it definitely ain't the same picture!

My player has no bit-rate display, but I'm betting they upped it. Black levels are smoother and deeper, and overall detail has risen by 10 or 15%, by my estimation.
Evidence: The first shot of Serenity landing- notice lines and plates near the windows and the engines not previously visible...when Mal locks River in the 'pantry', notice the smudge on the window...also when the ship releases the decoys a LOT more dust and particles of crap is visible.
And all through the movie Mal's loose hair or two sticking out in funny ways caught my eye.

Also the sound seemed cleaner, but this is not my area of expertise.

Yeah, I'm DEFINITELY happy with this one!

Sorry, but it was hard to decipher the details while wiping tears of joy away during the movie.

I'll take your word on it and just agree.

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

I think you're right. The scene in the galley where Mal is talking about the Alliance coming back to the belief that they can make people better was almost completely white glare unless I was watching it on my computer screen. I knew he paused and looked at River at that point from seeing it in the theater, but I couldn't see it on the original DVD. But this one I watched on my TV screen and it played just fine, so they must have done something to it. Also on the original DVD there was an odd color splotch on the screen when Jayne asked why the Alliance didn't wait to blow the hell out of Haven, which was also gone this time. I don't know if it was just my copy or my copy combined with my TV, but it always bugged me.
And it was great to see the R. Tam sessions on something bigger than a quicktime window. I hadn't relized that there was a little tear when she's talking about needing to see her brother; it was totally lost in the tiny viewing, and heartwrenchingly clear seen full screen. So very, very shiny.

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.
A troll's hair is still pointy, even when it's wearing a hat.

I was seein' stuff like that all through...like bolts and eyelashes and pores- I make it sound like HD here, and it wasn't- but it was definitely a better picture... I'm so glad, I'm so glad, I'm glad I'm glad I'm glad...

Also on the technical side, nice to see Session 416 remastered for DVD, using a steady graininess for effect instead of the blocky video artifacting from the original Web release.

I nearly fell over when i saw this, and I've probably seen the Sessions more times than anyone. I went back to the originals and if you know it's coming, you can just make it out. But not once until the DVD versions did I ever catch it.

Okay, I just got my Amazon shipment yesterday.

I too noticed a significantly improved transfer, though I never thought the original was particularly bad. Apparently someone took a bit more care and paid better attention to detail.

Awesome packaging!

The R. Tam Sessions: fantastic! I actually raised the question of getting a better-quality version of these all the way back at Flanvention I. I asked Summer about it in a Q&A session; she answered that she thought the low quality of the online vids was "part of their charm". Well, Summer, I love ya, but no. These really need to be seen in the DVD version for full impact. I never really got the implication of the pen until last night (Doh!)

I watched the movie with the cast commentary, so I can't comment yet on the DTS audio track. I always thought the regular Dolby Digital sound was excellent.

As to the commentary itself, it was fun, but maybe a little less than I'd hoped for. There were some bittersweet moments, too, as at least some of the participants seemed to feel that Firefly/Serenity was definitively over and done. I'm thinking we'll rise again, though, and this CE set has the potential to get us there.

Well, yes, later. But at that point I was one of several hundred folks in a hotel conference hall, with Summer (and other BDHs) on stage.

The really neat part was having Sunday lunch at the same table with both her and Alan, and only five or six other Browncoats.

That was the day after the banquet where I sat beside Morena and across the table from Christina Hendricks... but I digress.
