ETA: *Many individual Browncoat groups have opted to extend this initiative through the holiday season. That makes for a much longer window of opportunity to get the Signal out to the firefighters!*

I was inspired by what a friend on Skiffy posted about getting a copy of the BDCE for her hubby's fire station.

"Firefly for Firefighters" is the idea which has grown from that small gesture.

Every community, in the US and pretty much anywhere else I can think of, has at least one fire station, most of them manned 24 hours. The firefighters there are real life Big Damn Heroes, but, aside from the occasional tragic occurrence, don't get much recognition for looking out for every one of us, all the time. As such, they spend a lot of time waiting for trouble to arise, and, between station-house duties and calls, have a good amount of time on their hands.

Firefighters deserve the chance to become Browncoats. Likely, many already are, but, many more are not.

That's where "Firefly for Firefighters" comes in.

Local Browncoat groups can get together, pitch in to buy sets of the Firefly and BDCE DVDs, and, make a gift of them to their local staffed fire stations. Together, the DVDs cost less than $40.00US, so, a group of ten Browncoats would only have to contribute about $4 individually, per fire station.

I propose that, in the month of September, we all do our best to get these two DVDs into the hands of as many firefighters as possible. Locate all the fire stations in your community, figure out your budget for sufficient DVDs, then, call the stations to let them know that your group wants to come visit and make a gift to the station DVD library. Arrange a time at the convenience of the station Chief or other responsible party, to be sure you don't interrupt some important activity.

When you do make your visit, it would be a great opportunity to establish ties with the firefighters, there. Many stations are involved in other charitable causes, and, might welcome the assistance of our enthusiastic numbers, when they do their own fundraisers or fire safety awareness events. It wouldn't hurt, at all, to offer that assistance, especially if you have an organized group in need of a purpose.

Be sure, assuming it's alright with the firefighters, to get some pictures, when you visit. Please, post 'em here, let us see your local BDHs!

This is not only a great thing to do for the firefighters, but, it also gets the signal out. You know what happens when folks watch Firefly. A good many flamin' Browncoats could arise from this, and, we'd make 'em very welcome!

By the way, and, especially given Joss' connection with Equality Now, this would also be a great way to connect with local Women's shelters, for the same reasons. Share something we all know is enjoyable with them, and, make that connection, for when they need some assistance with their own cause.

Come on, Browncoats! We are many, and, these folks are everywhere! Won't cost more'n a couple bucks, each, for most of us with friends, and, the benefits will be lasting.

Love is what keeps her in the air... All our love.

I've seen Firefly at our local Target stores at $19.99US. Our new Costco has it at $16.99. On another board, I've heard of another Costco having it as low as $15.00.

That just makes it all the easier!

In other news, I have discovered that donating a video to a DC fire department requires going through a bureaucracy large enough to kill a small child. I'm thinking of donating my FF/Serenity pack to a hospital instead.

MartianWay,

I'll be trying to bump these threads as we go along too.

I wonder if it'd be easier to donate a copy to a women's shelter or a homeless shelter? In those instances where donating to your local firefighters would be difficult as you're describing?

A hospice? A students lounge of a college?
Anyone else who can think of an alternative where communities might be red tape inclined?

As for myself. I hope to meet with the head firefighter at our volunteer fire department here in town on Tuesday. I hope we don't have too much red tape.

I'm thinking of just going up to the fire station and saying something like "These are my copies of Firefly and Serenity and I'm donating them to whatever library you have, and if you don't let me do this, you aren't fit to pour piss out a boot with instructions on the heel", only I'm afraid I'd just end up offending or confusing some venerable old fireman.

I know my ma volunteers at a homeless shelter some days; I'll ask her if they've got a library of some sort.

Aloha!

We're back from the border planet moon of Hawai'i!

Yesterday, Rhiotre and I dropped off a Firefly series DVD set and a BDCE with the crew at the Hawai'ian Paradise Park Fire Department in the community of the same name outside Hilo, Hawai'i.

We also gave another series and BDCE as a guest gift to the folks from whom we rented our vacation home in HPP, as well.

I'll try to get some pics of the station and crew posted in the next day or two.

Oh, and, just to help the sales figures, bought BDCE #6 at the Hilo WalMart, to hand out here at home.

Let's all see where else we can get Firefly into the hands of firefighters (or others who might enjoy it) in the month of September!

And, here are the firefighters who were happy, if a tad surprised, to receive the Firefly series and BDCE DVD sets:

One, additional note:

In the instances of there being MANY multiple fire stations, local groups are picking those closest to home. My local group, the Greenville Browncoats, is turning this into a gift-basket deal, with popcorn and cookies and such, along with the two video sets.

By the way, some folks have asked pro or con the BDM vs. the BDCE. Either one is fine, but, the BDCE is preferable, if finances warrant, as it is sales of the BDCE which will have an impact on Universal's decision to opt another BDM, which they have to decide by the end of September.

Here is an image created by werellama of the Greenville Browncoats which can be used freely with this promotion, should you wish to spread the signal around a bit:

h ttp://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i166/Raycheetah/FireflyforFirefighters.jp g

Thanks, again, for your kind attention. This has the potential to generate MANY more Browncoats (fire stations being busy places), which is never a bad thing, plus the public goodwill it can create. As noted, a lasting positive relationship with the firefighters can also be a shiny thing, indeed.

Can't stop the signal!

The idea is catching on here but instead of buying new CE DVDs ('cause we're all tapped out from Dragon*Con), we're going to collect all the original Serenity movies from folks who got their CE and no longer need the old one. Now we just need to get our hands on some Firefly sets.

When we can get some cashy money, will buy more CE to donate too.

Hey, that's shiny, no matter how you slice it! Firefly sets might need to come from Amazon; I'm waiting on my order to make my donations, since the Brick and Mortar stores have been out, 'cept Target, who just raised the price 25%.

FfF After-Event Report:

Patrick (another Greenville Browncoat), Rhiotre, and I met up at the Publix on Wade Hampton Boulevard, today. The three of us picked up some goodies to add to the vids for the Firefighters: Strawberry Fruity Oaty Bars (well, the contemporary equivalent), popcorn, Li'l Debbie Fancy Cakes (like Kaylee's dress), and, Miniature Snickers bars.

We then proceeded to the Wade Hampton FD... They were out on a call.

So, we went down to the Wade Hampton Water and Fire District Station, where we were received by the station Chief, and, presented the FfF bundle on behalf of the Greenville Browncoats.

Our next stop was the Taylors #2 FD (Brushy Creek), and, we presented another set of goodies, there. Upon our return to our first stop, the crew was still out on call, so, Rhiotre and I parted ways with Patrick, planning to make delivery tomorrow morning.

However, after Rhiotre and I got supper, we swung back by stop #1 one more time, and, found the crew in. We made our final presentation of the evening, then, went triumphantly to WalMart to have our digital images processed, for easy upload tonight.

I was eight gorram minutes too late, when I went back to pick up the CD =-[.]-=.

So, pics tomorrow.

Anyway, we have made our first dent in the many fire stations in the local area. I doubt we can realistically expect to get to all of them, but, we can certainly do our Browncoat best.

So, more on the morrow.

To the Firefighters who stand constant vigil over our community, we Browncoats (fans of the television series Firefly) would like to present your station with a token of our appreciation for your ongoing efforts to safeguard all our lives and property.

Some rather non-plussed-looking firefighters in those photos, hah! They'll get their plus back after they watch the DVDs, though.

I'd do this for our own local BDHs, but being married to one of them, I know from personal experience that the last thing any of them needs is an excuse to spend MORE time down at the station. It's an all volunteer force without specific shifts, and when they're not on a fire call or doing rig maintenance, they should be home with their families. Now if I were to give EACH ONE a set to take home, now, that'd be shiny!

Well, then, Jubel, a lotta thanks go out to you and your fellow firefighers, too!

You guys do what a lotta the rest of us are gorram glad we dun have to; my dad was with a VFD in NJ, when I was a kid, so, I knew a little bit of the "cool" part of it, but, it's also hard, dangerous, and, sometimes, thankless work.

So, thanks, again, to you BDHs!

Be safe!

Last Saturday, the 27th, a contingent of the Greenville Browncoats, consisting of Green-Eyed Laura, Evil Mandy (it dun mean what you might think!), Rhiotre, and, yours, truly, met up at The Command Post, a local gaming store (owned by another member of the Greenville Browncoats), to prepare for a day out among the local firefighters. We chatted and watched Firefly on the big-screen TV, there, while waiting for any stragglers. When none appeared, we set out.

We had among us five sets each of the Firefly Series and Serenity Collector's Edition DVDs, as well as goodies for munching. Each bag included Fruity Oaty bars (or, the moral equivalent), popcorn, snack crackers, and, either Pumpkin Treats or Fall Brownies.

Our first stop was the Eastside Fire Station.

The crew there invited us inside, and, we chatted for most of 20 minutes, before proceeding on our way.

We then stopped at the Stone Avenue Station.

A lone firefighter greeted us and accepted our package.

Our next stop, after slight navigational difficulties, was Parker District Station 2.

The crew there gave us directions to the next station...

Which was Parker District Station 4.

Another, lone firefighter met us and accepted our package.

Finally, we made our way (sans Evil Mandy, whom we dropped off back at the Command Post) to our last stop of the day, the Fountain Inn Fire Department.

The firefighters there also invited us in for a brief chat.

The Greenville Browncoats plan another jaunt in November. Plenty enough local fire stations unvisited, as yet!

I hope this inspires other Browncoats to go out and share the shiny with our first-responders! If you do, please, report it, here, and, post any pics, so we can all see where you went, and, who you met.

Make it a shiny day!

Last Saturday, the 8th, a contingent of the Greenville Browncoats, consisting of Linda (the creator of my FfF sig), Evil Mandy (it dun mean what you might think!), Rhiotre, john, and, yours, truly, met up at The Command Post, a local gaming store (owned by another member of the Greenville Browncoats), to prepare for yet another day out among the local firefighters.

We bore five sets of the usual swag: One set each of the Firefly and BDCE DVDs, Fruity Oaty bars (local brand), fancy holiday cakes (like Kaylee's "Shindig" dress), popcorn, miniature Snicker's bars, and, some more exotic goodies Linda brought, which, as I can't remember how to spell, I won't embarrass myself in the tryin'.

We stopped first at Wade Hampton FD, Station 3:

Where we marshalled our forces in the parking lot:

We approached the festively-decorated door for our first drop:

And, were greeted by the station crew:

Our next stop was the Boiling Springs FD Station 2:

The crew wouldn't let us leave without a station tour; we got to see all the very shiny fire trucks, including a new rescue unit that would make a heckuva RV:

We moved along to the Boiling Springs FD Station 1:

Not to be outdone, the crew, there, showed us their vehicles, along with all the awesome rescue equipment, including the fabled "Jaws of Life!"

Our fourth stop was the Boiling Springs FD Station 3:

Where the crew received us warmly, as well:

Our last stop was Greenville FD Station 3:

Where, once again, the friendly crew received a bag of Browncoat holiday cheer:

According to Linda, there are other Browncoat groups going unsung, in Tennessee and North Carolina, while I am aware of efforts in Utah and Texas, as well, to brighten the firefighters day with similar visits.

If anybody cares to participate, it looks like this is going to be a near-perennial effort, at least, until most or all stations are covered, so, don't feel you have to stop on January 1, 2008! And, if you do make drops to your local BDHs, please, post a short report here, even if you don't leave pictures.

Happy holidays, especially to our first-responders! Thanks for being our guardian angels, year-round, but, especially at this time of year!

ZEEK

Well after a long process of trying to donate a set of these in Austin, TX I've been totally rejected. I really don't know who is such a hard ass in this area but they were far from friendly. I had to call a number of different places and every time they acted like I was some sort of spy or evil person trying to take advantage of them. Finally they told me that fire stations in Austin aren't allowed to have DVDs. I find that hard to believe but whatever.

So, I have a set of the DVD boxset and Serenity Collector's Edition that I want to donate to firefighters. If they won't take them here then I'll mail them to someone who will appreciate them. Anybody have a fire station that wants them? Just let me know here or send me a PM. Thanks.

Well, gorramit, Zeek!

I'm really disappointed! I'd heard somebody up in DC say they couldn't manage the paperwork required to give a gift to the firefighters, but, that's DC. I am really surprised that you ran into suspicion.

I'm glad you still want to give it a go, though. Nertz. I'll give someone else a chance to speak up for their area firefighters, before I glom onto your offer, since, we have managed to get pretty good coverage, locally.

So, anybody want to help Zeek pass the torch to some smoke-eaters in their area?

Thanks for giving it your best shot, Zeek. You're a shiny Browncoat stalwart, in my book!

*Update*

I figured out a good plan. I took the DVDs back to IL with me for the holidays. Now the Glenview, IL fire station has their own shiny copies of Firefly and Serenity. They seemed all happy and shocked that anyone would think of giving them something. Felt pretty darn good.

Didn't it just?

Shiny! I'm glad that worked. Aside from the smoke-eaters who are too in tune with the current atmosphere of fear and suspicion, most are very surprised to be remembered, at any time of the year, and, glad to receive a nice thank-you gift from a grateful community.

And, you can also almost assuredly notch your Browncoat gunbelt with a number of conversions, Zeek!

Way to go!

CHROMIUMOXIDEGREEN

hello there,

I've never seen the firefly series but did catch the serenity movie. I found this site in a very convoluted manner while googling KYFHO (it's an F. Paul Wilson thing) I feel compelled to comment on your firefighter plan. That's GREAT. I'm a volunteer ff way up in the great white north of Canada(about 40 minutes west of toronto). We have 20 fulltime ff's and roughly 100 volunteers. I know our station 3 has a dvd library. I think it's a wonderful thing you're doing. Good work. It baffles me that some have had trouble giving the gifts due to red tape. p.s. I've heard good things about the series and that the fans are very loyal.

everyone goes home

Whoah! Shiny (cool)! Welcome to the forum, then, COG! It is the highest honor to be told by a firefighter that we're doing good. We Browncoats are already pretty compulsive about sharing what we enjoy (as you might could tell). When we can share with folks such as yourselves, who really DESERVE something back from all of us, whose lives and property you risk your own to protect, well, there's just no good reason not to do it.

If you've already seen Serenity, you really need to see the 14 episode series, in order to truly appreciate what all the fuss is about. Thanks, in general, for doing the job you do, and, in particular, for taking the time to return our salute. Please, feel free to drop in and lurk, or ask questions. We'll be glad to have you.

By the bye, COG... You folks have an address at the station, for the inevitable instance that Browncoats are gonna read this, and, want to send along Firefly and Serenity?

First to post intent gets the job!
