This is a site that's been around for a while, and they admit that these are not the absolute numbers. But this is stuff is used by a lot of people in the biz. First numbers for Serenity should be out in a day or so.

This will be interesting to watch. Gee, I hope we hit some big numbers. Surely #5 on Amazon.com means some numbers. Best Buy must have sold a ton with the comic tie-in.

And I can't believe Wild Hoggs is doing so well. It looked so stupid.

That's the wierd thing with DVD releases. With some titles, it seems to find a whole new market. Flix that fail in theaters become superstars on DVD. That's why Hollywood is willing to release stuff straight to DVD. They can make money that way, and avoid the big risk of a theatrical release (even a small efforts costs you a few mill).

Of course, I don't believe it ever went beyond #5, and is already back down to below #10.

I would not expect to see the same sorts of numbers we saw from the original release, IMHO.

I agree. Lots of non-Browncoats bought the first release DVD, not including the BC's that have bought multiple copies. But it will probably be only true Browncoats that buy the CE.

Couldn't find the numbers on sales figures, but found some digits on how our BDM did in theaters.

Theatrical Performance
Total US Gross: $25,514,517
International Gross: $13,000,000
Worldwide Gross: $38,514,517

Considering the production budget was a reported $39,000,000, it just squeaked under breaking even in the theaters. Bring in DVD, HD, and Special Edition sales, and seems like Universal has probably made a tidy little profit off the whole thing.

So how much Serenity merch do I have to buy to get a sequel?

The movie owner only gets about half the theater revenue. But Josss has intimated that other revenue sources (TV, DVD, etc) have brought in enough to push the income close to the total expenses (which are more like $50 million, as you have to include marketing.)

Actually what Joss Whedon said just recently, is:

"So after all is said and done, was Serenity profitable? Do you consider it a success?

Joss Whedon (JW): It's a success to the studio or else we wouldn't be doing a special edition DVD. They actually admitted as much on paper, which you know studios are loathe to do, and that was actually from the theatrical. Theatrical was a disappointment, as everyone knows, but it did go into the black."

There have been differing opinions about this, but Whedon would be in a good position to know and he never mentions that his info has anything to do with TV Rights.

I'm surprised and dismayed that the International revenues were so low. I would think that folks over in Asia, who are generally rabid movie-goers would have loved and embraced the BDM for its' action and Oriental influence. But I guess not...or was it that it wasn't distributed on a large basis around the world.

Seems to me I recall at the time that many of the foreign showings were canceled as the box office dropped.
Didn't allow for many showings nor much money making.
I guess Uni figured the expense outweighed the profit.

What Joss is implying is that the DVD sales were spectacular. And sometimes they are, returning more cash to the studio than the theatrical release. The studios love stuff like that. Sort of a third act, with a happy ending, after a poor showing in the theaters, and a thin TV deal. Hey, just like in the movies...

So....if the movie made money in the theaters (Joss said the studio admitted it got into the black) and DVD sales did well enough to get a Special Edition release which also did fairly well....why aren't we seeing a countdown to Serenity 2 on the main page of this website????

Lowbrow stuff has always sold better than more refined stuff. Although in the case of Firefly, the only lowbrows in the way were the ones running Fox at the time...

Studio execs may be a little leery of stuff that is hugely popular with the net audience. The memory of "Snakes on a Plane" bombing at the box office is still fresh. Much more was expected of Serenity I. Well, maybe a little more. Maybe Josh is haggling over how much Serenity II will cost. Who knows?

This is what gets me: Ever seen one of the scifi channel's made-for-tv-movies? They blow all manner of *ss. I'm not sure what the budget was on a picture like mamoth or earthstorm but I know they couldn't have made all the much money. Serenity the pilot episode cost about 2 million if memory serves and it made a lot of money when you think about how much DVD sales of Firefly took in. Plus, it ruled! So, if the execs at scifi (which is owned by UniversalNBC) would fork over just 2 or 3 million to make a tv movie sequel to firefly, I'm sure Joss and team could pull it off and they'd probably make there money back on ads alone during the first few showings. Not to mention DVD sales and I think at this point we browncoats have proven we'll buy whatever they put out.

So how about it? Why not a scifi TV movie? Should we start the letter writing campaign?

Quite correct. In fact, Serenity's lack of theatrical release in, for example, Japan reportedly was why Japanese fans weren't able to mount a charity screening there this year.

Nope...Memory fails...'Serenity' (the pilot episode) cost more than 8 , almost 9 million dollars...But , Joss put all of it onto the
screen .

Sci-fi's made-for-TV stuff generally really does suck...So why would we want our show to be a one-shot movie on that little network with limited demographics ?

HBO or Showtime or another large pay-cable net would be a much-better choice...They'd be able to bring the coin to do it right...

2 megabucks would scarcely be enough to build a Serenity ship's set...Probably was more than that in the case of the BDM .

Those crappy sci-fi movies have viewers though. I read somewhere awhile ago that they do okay for sci-fi. I'm not sure who watches them, but someone must.

AND I want to give Sci-Fi the benefit of the doubt. If they gave Joss the money and let him do it with just minor influences, it might work. The Farscape movie was pretty good. skiffy is so iffy though (didn't mean to make that a bad play on words there)

It takes several days, after the end of the reporting period, for them to gather the data. Not sure what day of the week the release new stuff. For the last three days, they've still been showing the week ending on the 19th. Any day now, the data for the week ending the 26th will show up, along with six days sales for Serenity CE.

I'd say that 25 isn't bad when you consider its already been released before. I don't know how many movies do a huge amount of business in special editions (aside from the LOTR movies, in which the SE's were really completely different movies), but I'm cheered by the fact that serenity could rack up another couple million from a second release. I live in the Philippines and I never saw Serenity in our theaters. We usually get even the soft-porny low-budget American movies but no Serenity. Or maybe I just missed it, even though I go to the movies every weekend even when I'm alone. I just discovered Firefly/Serenity when I moved to Dubai.

Well that doesn't seem too shiny. I'd imagine this is why we don't have Serenity 2. Sure the CE was a huge release to us, but the rest of the country apparently didn't even notice.

There have been widespread reports of both brick-and-mortar and online vendors who quickly went out of stock on the BDCE. This clearly indicates that we exceeded Universal's expectations, which is a SHINY thing!

Studios LOVE restock orders for recently-released DVDs. It means that they have a moving property on their hands. Let's hope that this will translate into more Serenity, at the very least!

I was out today shopping for 3 more Firefly DVD sets and my 8th BDCE for my local group's "Firefly for Firefighters" drive,

http://forums.scifi.com/index.php?showtopic=2285065

and had abysmal luck. I went to the Costco which had had Firefly a couple weeks ago at $16.99US; completely out, and, no BDCE in sight. I went to Target, which had reliably stocked Firefly for $19.99US; no BDCE, but had three series DVD sets in stock, at $24.99US! I am a big flan, but, I have a hard time choking down a 25% price hike on this product. I went to BJ's, found the BDCE at $18.99US, thank you very much! but, no Firefly.

Went to Best Buy, which had the original Serenity DVD at $14.99US (which, aside from the fact that I had already scored the one BDCE I needed this trip, the point was to boost sales figures of the BDCE!), no Firefly, and, the BDCE that they did have was HD DVD. Humph!

Went to the other Target in town, same price as the first one. Called Rhiotre to have her Amazon.com me some Firefly series DVD sets; she informed me that I could get them at around $21.00US... Used (but like new). New, they would be... $29.00US.

Folks, this is a very odd trend. Is the price of the Firefly series DVD set actually going UP in response to our demand, or, is the supply dropping, with no replenishment? It's gonna be gorram difficult to get it when WalMart and Kmart refuse to carry it, at all, and, the other places don't stock it except at ridiculous prices. Sales figures will be hurt by the fact that there's little to buy.

Any thoughts, observations, or, incitements to panic?

I do not know about others, but Amazon has raised the price from $18 to $20 (before I got mine too...oh well, I guess Universal's just getting more of my money).

Yeah, week 2 will tell the tale. Considering how many places where CE sold out, that should show up in week 2, as strong sales. Then again, did Universal seriously underestimate the demand? If so, what does that say about what kind of feedback Universal needs before they green light the sequel.
