Hey All

I don't know if any of you guys are interested in the TV business and it's numbers and all, but I actually came across an interesting article over at thefutoncritic.com. The article is basically about how at the beginning of every new fall season, that only one in three new shows actually make it to a second season. Here's the article.

1. Only one of every three new shows makes it to a second season.

Since the fall of 1999, 596 shows have premiered on the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, UPN, The WB and now, The CW). Of those, 189 - or about 32% - made it to second seasons. Or conversely, 407 - or about 68% - didn't make it to second seasons. It's a statistic that, for the most part, holds true from season to season and from network to network. Don't believe us? Check out the hard data:

season abc cbs fox nbc upn wb cw total
1999-2000 4/13 (31%) 6/12 (50%) 2/12 (17%) 4/14 (29%) 1/7 (14%) 5/10 (50%) 22/68 (32%)
2000-2001 5/12 (42%) 4/10 (40%) 3/11 (27%) 5/17 (29%) 2/8 (25%) 4/8 (50%) 23/66 (35%)
2001-2002 4/16 (25%) 4/11 (36%) 5/17 (29%) 7/15 (47%) 2/5 (40%) 4/11 (36%) 26/75 (35%)
2002-2003 6/21 (29%) 5/12 (42%) 3/17 (18%) 8/17 (47%) 2/6 (33%) 5/13 (38%) 29/86 (34%)
2003-2004 3/18 (17%) 4/8 (50%) 7/22 (32%) 3/11 (27%) 2/9 (22%) 4/11 (36%) 23/79 (29%)
2004-2005 9/20 (45%) 3/11 (27%) 6/17 (35%) 5/20 (25%) 2/8 (25%) 2/7 (29%) 27/83 (33%)
2005-2006* 2/17 (12%) 6/12 (50%) 4/11 (36%) 3/16 (19%) 1/5 (20%) 1/8 (13%) 17/69 (25%)
2006-2007** 8/27 (30%) 3/9 (33%) 3/14 (21%) 6/16 (38%) 2/4 (50%) 22/70 (31%)
total 41/144 (28%) 35/85 (41%) 33/121 (27%) 41/126 (33%) 12/48 (25%) 25/68 (37%) 2/4 (50%) 189/596 (32%)

Note: The above data doesn't count the 20 shows that were produced during the period that never actually aired (FOX's "The Grubbs," NBC's "The Men's Room," etc.). In addition, with UPN and the WB folding after the 2005-2006 season, the "renewals" are counted as those new shows that made it to the CW (*). And finally as for the current season, we're assuming that none of the remaining new summer shows will make it to second seasons, save for CBS's "Power of 10" and NBC's "Age of Love," both of which were excluded from the data (**).

From this we can also glean a few other pieces of info - CBS (41%) and The WB (37%) had the best survival rates while FOX (27%) and UPN (25%) had the worst. But considering that both UPN and the WB don't exist anymore, that doesn't necessarily translate into longevity as a whole.

The truth is that with 54 new shows (and counting) set to premiere during the 2007-2008 season, odds are only 14-19 (25-35%) will actually be around for the 2008-2009 season.

So while on FOX, FIREFLY was only one of three new series that was actually cancelled during the 02-03 season, and that Joss maybe should have avoided FOX altogether, but not 20th Century Fox. Network, bad. Studio, good for the most part.

LWAVES

I was thinking about this the other day.
Not so much about the numbers but which actual shows actually made it beyond having a pilot shown, which made it into a first season and which actually made it all the way through a first season.

I was on this train of thought because I'd heard that Traveler had been cancelled or was very likely to be cancelled. From what I'd heard it sounded interesting and I was gonna give it a go when it arrived in the UK. Guess I won't bother now.....
