Hey everyone! I'm new here, but a dedicated browncoat. Just got into Firefly (actually going to watch Serenity tonight), and boy am I hooked. It's possible that with only 14 episodes, it has become my favorite show ever, dethroning the one that was there since I was a kid. I've never been so addicted to a TV show. I want more episodes! This story cannot remain untold!

[/rant]

*pant pant* Sorry about that... just wanted to say hello! :)

Welcome choco, i like to abrevate, to the board. We all share the same feelings on bringing Firefly back.

The best way to do this unfortunately is through our wallets. The more that we buy, such as the new CE of Serenty buy as many as you can, give them away, turn new people on to Firefly. Get others to buy the movie and the series.

In doing this then networks will have to see that this series which WAS canceled back in 2002 is still making a profit.

Welcome home, CJ! You're #28126 to sign on aboard this, surely the shiniest ship ever launched.

You'll look great in the virtual browncoat when the virtual browncoat fitter comes along.

Meanwhile, stash your stuff and sit down over here by the big bowl of berries and the row of earthen jugs which contain the very best of Mudder's Milk. It's our way of welcoming you.

Later there'll be more food, and tale-telling, and job-planning, and games and whatnot in the galley.

If you happen to see ShipsCat, could you please deliver her to the bridge?

So... I just watched Serenity.

And though I feel somewhat better... I have to say it was a huge letdown.

Not that I'm no longer a fan or anything. Far from it.

The movie just felt so... contrived.

It was as if (probably was, honestly) they took all the story arcs that they had really just opened with the series, and snuffed them out to give them a sense of completion. All of these things (Mal and Inara, Kaylee and Simon, Shepherd Book, River, and Wash? What was that about?) that could have been developed and drawn out... were just wrapped up real quick-like. Beyond that, because it was a theatrical release, we lost the "I'm part of the crew" film style of the series that made it so great.

Sigh. I'm disappointed. Not because the movie was bad. By itself it was a great movie. But in comparison to the series, and what the series could have been... man. Can we just pretend all that never happened and get on with the series?

CURSE YOU, FOX!!! CURSE YOU AND YOUR SUDDEN BUT INEVITABLE BETRAYAL!!!

As a side note - I don't know what to believe anywhere I read it, and I thought some of you might know better than me. Now, I know I'm hoping against hope here, but is it true that Fox loses the TV rights to Firefly soon?

welcome to the site, take it easy on getting addicted to Firefly; it's not like crack, but it comes pretty close

"Take my love, take my land,
Take my crack stem from my hand,
I don't care, I'm still free,
My fingers stink of feces

Take me out, buy some crack,
Tell your mom I'll be right back,
Burn the land boil the sea,
You can't take this high from me

There's no place I can be
since I started smoking trees

You can't take my crack from me"

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Welcome ChocoboJoe! Glad to have you here. Make yourself at home.

Now you must go forth and spread the word, bringing Firefly / Serenity to all those as needs it told.

DONCOAT

Welcome, CJ!

I had to Google to figure out what "Chocobo" was all about. Now I know that.

Better avoid ShipsCat, though -- she's got a thing about birds.

(I thought maybe Chocobo was related to "jockamo", as in "Jockamo fee na-ne" (creole patios used in the song "Iko Iko"). But no.

Anyhow, hope you enjoy the good ship FireflyFans.

Here's my take on the Serenity vs. Firefly controversy. First of all, you're not alone. A lot of Firefly fans had similar feelings to yours, especially at first.

What you need to understand is that the theatrical movie is a very different medium than television. Joss was faced with a huge challenge in trying to reintroduce the Firefly 'verse AND nine regular characters AND a new antagonist, AND tell a compelling story all within a 2-hour time window. (Hey, it took a 2-hour pilot and several episodes to do that in the series!) In that light, I think he did amazingly well.

I think you'll find, though, that on repeated viewings the movie will grow on you, and will come to seem more in the spirit of the series, even if very different in pacing and level of detail.

You might also want to get hold of the comic/graphic novel "Serenity - Those Left Behind", which fills in some of the discontinuities between the series and movie.

Yeah, I read Those Left Behind before watching the movie, so some things made more sense.
As far as the movie goes, I understand what he had to work with. I'm not downing it at all... I guess what I was really trying to say was that it was not Joss' fault that I was disappointed. It was FOX's fault for canceling it and forcing it to be brought back in a movie format, instead of a TV series which it was supposed to be. I dunno. I just would have liked to have seen all those story arcs be developed and fully fleshed out, instead of really quickly wrapped up. Does anyone still hold out hope that it could come back as a TV series, and pick up where we left off?

Hello again, i'd like to point out that all the browncoats feel that the series should be brought back. So much so that some browncoats are trying their best to make their own FanFilms. Two in progress are Bellflower and Into the Black. More power to them. :)

CJoe,
I preferred the series, too.
A whole bunch.
Though I own the lot and have watched them nearly into rubble.
But I understood where Whedon was when suddenly faced with a chance to make a film -- and then had to introduce the whole 'Verse to new people.
Thinking about it just makes me sad.

Get a continuation of the series? Probably not in series form. But I am old and cynical and have seen a lot of Hollywood under the bridge. Space operas are expensive and need to promise at least a tee-ninesy profit under most circumstances.

What I hope for is more TV episodes with as much of the original cast as can be scraped together. A lot of the FF charm came from the ensemble cast plus Joss, Tim, and other off-camera personnel.

Maybe, maybe, if we can wait long enough...
