Man, talk about a sleeper hit! They made $20 million and never went to wide release.
I hope it does well internationally.

Waitress did actually go wide in the USA. 707 theaters at some time. 600 is the magic number for wide according to Wiki.

Ah yes, forgot to consult good old Wiki. Still, seems like it had a more limited release than most "blockbuster" movies. It only played in two theaters here in Charlotte. And there are dozens of theaters around town. I still consider it The Little Movie That Could. I bet nobody expected it to do as well as it has.

Oh yeah, 707 is way low. I think the 600 wide was set years ago when that was considered a lot of theaters. Now Spiderman plays at 4000 theaters.

And it is still playing. Just came back to within an two-hour radius of me. To a first run theater! So Waitress is still moving to new theaters in the US.

Right now, it is Fox Searchlight's highest USA box office gross movie for the year.

Without knowing its production budget, we have no way of knowing how well it's actually doing.

Of course, it's not like there was a lot of 'Romance CGI' to take up budget, eh?

Well, we know it was an indie.

We know Fox Searchlight paid $4 million for the worldwide distribution rights after Sundance Film Festival.

And all the Romance was not CGI.

So Fox Searchlight has way made back what they paid for distribution rights.

And it is still in theaters!

I saw it twice, the second with a friend who's not a Browncoat (she now has my DVDs) but who told all of our coworkers, "Everyone should see this movie".

I'm going to buy it when it comes out. It's really beautiful and heartwarming.

There's a movie theatre in the mall where I work, and I went to see it 7 times in two weeks, taking co-workers along with me several times. I feel very satisfied to have done my part ;)
BTW, is it out on DVD yet? I've asked at the local HMV and they didn't have a clue.
I aim to misbehave.

I finally saw Waitress on the airplane while flying from London to Atlanta before Dragon*Con.

Don't you think it's great that they have it on airplanes, along smash hits like Spiderman?

It seems to indicate how widely appealing this movie is.

It also showed in South Africa, but unfortunately it showed at limited theaters (2 in the whole of Gauteng!!) and only for two weeks. (the majority of movies only show for about two weeks, unless they're supremely popular)

But at least it made it here....

It is available for pre-ordering at amazon.com already.

Says November 27, 2007. But another article said Halloween.

Yeah, that is cool!

When you are on an airplane, do you have to pay to see the movie or the earphones or something?

No, not that I've ever encountered. Different airlines have different facilities.

On my way from South Africa to England there was only one little screen at the front of the plane and they showed Shrek 3. My seat's earphone jack, was broken, so I couldn't listen to the soundtrack, even if I wanted to.

On the flight from England to Atlanta, I flew on Delta, and each seat had it's own little screen, and each passenger had his own choice of a fair number of movies, tv-shows, music. That was great. Choices were free, though I assume they could also include pay per view, since the tv screen had a slot for a credit card.

On the flight from Atlanta back to SA, I again flew on Delta, but this time they only had a few screens scattered through the cabin, and they showed some girly movie.

So it's all the luck of the draw (though I noticed that the planes between Europe and America are a lot nicer than the ones used for the African leg of the flight)

Waitress passes the $19 mil mark US Box Office Gross! 20.3 mil WW!

Whoo-hoo! $19 million US Box Office Gross!

Domestic: $19,006,229
+ Foreign: $1,307,888

Actually when you add up the individual totals on the international page, the numbers are higher. Sometimes, it takes a while for the totals to match up with the individual country updates.
