Shindig:

Mal: “Mercy is the mark of a great man. (stabs Atherton) Guess I'm just a good one. (stabs Atherton again) Well, I'm alright.”

Trainjob:

"You know what the chain of command is? It's the chain I go get and beat you with until you understand who's in ruttin' command here. "

Two of my favorites but really I like them all

This has got to be one of the hardest decisions... I think my all time favorite is:

Mal: Ain't no way in the 'verse they can find that compartment even... even if they were looken for it
Zoe: Why not?
Mal: ... cause
Zoe: Oh yeah, this is gonna go great.
Mal: If anyone gets nosey, just shoot'em
Zoe: Shoot 'em?
Mal: Polietly

I was actually very surprised that no one had posted it before today. someone beat me by only a couple hours.
Another one that I really like that hasn't been posted yet is:

Jayne: Captin? Captin can you hear me?
Mal: I'm standin' right here.
Jayne: You're comin' in good and loud.
Mal: That's cuz I'm standin' right here.
Jayne: Well, yeah but... the transmitters...

OOH! and then I like: (off the top of my head, hope it's right)

Mal: I did a job, and I got nothin' but trouble since I did it, not to mention some unkind words as regrad to my character. So let me make this ubundantly clear: I do a job, and then I get paid. Go run your little world.

Other favs:

Book: If you take sexual advantage of her, you're
going to burn in a very special level of hell.
A level they reserve for child molesters and
people who talk at the theater.

Wash: What could it be, we're all doomed, who's flying this thing?!?! Oh, that would be me.

Mal: Public relations

Mal: If you got guests, I can come back later

Wash: Yes, this is a firtile land and we will thrive. We will rule over all this land and we will call it... This Land. I think we should call it Your Grave. Ahh, curse your sudden but enevitable betrayal. Ha, ha, ha- mine is an evil laugh- now die! Ahh, no God

Mal: Now you can luxuriate in a nice
jail cell, but if your hand touches metal, I swear by my pretty flowered bonnet, I will end you.

Need help on this one. I don't know exactly what she says.
River: (talking about Simon's birthday) caporial years... stellar- blah, blah jargon. *pause* I didn't get you anything.

And of coarse the theme song hast to count for something. It's just way too cool to ignore.

Take my love, take my land,
Take me where I cannot stand
I don't care, I'm still free
You can't take the sky from me.

Anyway, you all know the rest...
Oh! and I just came up with a very good one for my signature. I don't think anyone else is using it as a signature, but if you are... sorry.

Heh, I feel like an idiot. For some reason I just now got the rather obvious irony and foreshadowing there, given what happened later to Mal in "War Stories". Damn, this show sure ages well.

SergeantX

"..and here's to all the dreamers, may our open hearts find rest." -- Nanci Griffith

I don't know whether I should feel like an idiot, but I just made a realization about the last verse of the theme song:
There's no place I can be,
Since I found Serinity
At first I thought it was referring to the ship, but then I made the connection to the part when Zoe tells Simon about why Mal named the ship after the valley and the battle they lost there.
Once you're in Serenity, you never leave it. You learn to live there. Or something like that.
Did anyone else miss that?
Anyway, SergeantX, I didn't get that connection until you mentioned it.

It would have been more meaningful with that deleted scene included.

You would figure with that kind of mental scarring, Mal and Zoe would be plagued by shell-shock and nightmares. I guess there is the funny way they eat their apples.

PAINISSCARY

Though it'd probably be easier to come up with a list of least favorite lines (since there aren't any), here's some great ones (I'm trying hard to mention ones that haven't already been quoted):

Mal, befuddled at Wash's insisting on coming along on a mission: I'm lost, I'm angry... and I'm armed.

Wash, about Zoe's terseness: Right. Less talking. She's terse. I can be terse. Once in flight school, I was laconic.

Jayne's crude assessment of River: It's a girl. She's cute, too, but I don't think she's all there, y'know? 'Course, not all of her has to be...

River, having trouble with her dessert: My food is problematic.

Jayne, eager to make use of his rehearsed dialogue: We applied the cortical electrodes but were unable to get a neural reaction from either patient.

Jayne, asking Mal not to reveal his attempted betrayal of Simon and River: Make something up. Don't tell 'em what I did.

River freaking out over Book's voluminous hair, Zoe trying to help:
BOOK
River? Why don't you come out?

RIVER
No! I can't. Too much hair.

ZOE
Uh huh. River, honey? He's putting the
hair away now.

RIVER
It'll still be there....waiting.

Hey, canttakesky:
I think you misunderstood what painisscary said (you sniped the initial sentence too quickly).

painisscary said:
"Though it'd probably be easier to come up with a list of least favorite lines (since there aren't any), here's some great ones"

In other words, you two agree...

On a side note, when I started this thread way back in November (a hundred and eleven posts ago), I apparently didn't realize just how amazingly quotable just about every line of Firefly is. This is a testament and a huge compliment to Joss and his band-o-writers.

The whole set of exchanges between Book and River in Jaynestown is pretty hilarious. While I like River's explanation of how the Bible is "broken" best, this line (about Book's hair) is also brilliant:

They say the snow on the roof was too heavy.
They say the ceiling will cave in. His brains
are in terrible danger.

OK, here's another great River quote, from Shindig:

(spoken with Badger's accent)

Sure, I got a secret. More than one. Don't seem likely I'd tell 'em to you now, do it? Anyone off Dyton Colony knows better than to talk to strangers. You're talking loud enough for the both of us though, ain'tcha? I've known a dozen like you. Skipped off home early, running graft jobs here and there. Spent some time in the lock down, but less than you claim. And you're what? Petty thief with delusions of standing? Sad, little king of a sad, little hill.

Jayne:"Are YOU about to jump onto a moving train?"

River:"I can kill you with my brain."

Book:"You can't kill this man."
Jayne:"Not right away."

and the vote for the serious line:
Jayne:"Don't tell 'em what I done."

I love reading favourite lines -- and luckily (or not, depending on how carried away I get) I just finished watching my shiny new DVD set today!
I'll try not to repeat, and sorry if I don't get something precisely word-for-word.
BTW, I also am a big fan of stuff that sounds great taken completely out of context. But I'll go ahead n credit em.

"Haven't you killed me enough?" (Mal)

"You're using wiles on me!" (Mal)

"Lady, you're my kind of stupid." (er..Mal again)

"Jayne? Jayne Cobb?" (Inara, on finding out who the hero of Canton is)

"Jayne is a girl's name." (River)

"I'll stay out of your whorin' and you stay out of my thievin'." (Mal..seems to be a trend)

I think I have too many screaming around my brain right now. I'll narrow em down and come back later.

Wow, that was quick...

"The pitter patter of tiny feet in huge combat boots." (Mal)

"Captain'll come up with a plan."
"Well, that's good... right?"
"Possibly you're not recalling some of his previous plans." (Zoe & Kaylee)

"Ship like this, be with you til the day you die."
"That's because it's a deathtrap." (Mal & Zoe)

"..and I've made myself ready for you."
"Let's ride right past the part where you explain exactly what that means." (Saffron & Mal)

MISGUIDED BY VOICES

Its getting late, and so I scanned the posts, so apologies if I missed these -

The moment for me that manages to define the Simon/River relationship perfectly -

"I threw up...."
"I threw up on your bed"
"That's my sister"

Okay, its a great deal to do with the acting, but the layers it works on amaze me.

On that level, Objects in Space - pretty much all of it as a fantastically constructed script - River's "surrender" - "I'll be your bounty, Jubal Early". Add to that Early's terrifying speech to Kaylee, the "lion" exchange and "we're becoming fast friends". Wasn't this the "wacky fun" episode as well?

I've always liked:

Zoe: Doesn't the bible have some pretty spicific things to say about killing?
Book: Yes, but it's fuzzy on the area of knee caps.
(war stories)

Zoe: Jayne!?
Jayne: I didn't fight in no war. Best of luck though
(train job)

Mal: We've got some local color hapening...a grand entrance would not go amis.
(train job)

Wash: Aww, we always hoped you two'd get together, who is she?
(our mrs. reynolds)

Mal: she's not my wife!
safferon starts crying
Kaylee goes to her: Oh, there there, he's a monster
(our mrs. reynolds, not sure if i got that one quite right)

Simon (to jayne): your like a trained ape...without the training.
(serenity)

Wash: ok, everybody not talking about sex, in here. everybody else, out there!

I could go on with this for days...

All-time fav Firefly quotes? Hard to choose just 1, so I'm gonna do 5 that I love:

#1 - "Too much hair" - River
#2 - "Kaylee? What the hell's going on in the engine room? Were there monkeys? Some terrifying space monkeys maybe got loose?" - Mal
#3 - "You like ships. Don't seem to be
looking at the destinations. What
you care about is ships and mine
is the nicest." - Kaylee
#4 - "Every man there go back inside or
we will blow a new crater in this
little moon." - Wash
#5 - "He took this right off 'em. They
earned that with the sweat of their
slave-tradin' brows." - Mal

I love that last quote, mainly because of the way Nathan Fillion delivers it. It's also very reminiscent of a couple of his lines in "The Train Job".

***
Badger: If you'd gotten here sooner, you might've beaten the bulletin that came up saying a rogue vessel, classification 'Firefly', was spotted pulling illegal salvage on a derelict

I love how Mal refers to the sky as his, like in these two quotes:

Mal: Its getting crowed under my sky.
Mal: Wash, I would like my sky to be a little less empty.

It fits well with the theme song and Mal's cowboyish personality. You know what I mean, when some cowboys refer to a town as their town, their territory. Thats what Mal is doing; the sky is his territory. I love Mal.

"Give it baack?!!!?"

"You look stupid in that hat."

You know, it would be easier to make a list of lines I didn't like. But with that list, I'm not sure I'd make it to ten.

"You didn't have to wound that man."
"Yeah, I know. It was just funny."

SASJA

This doesn't really count as a line (more like, several), but it's hilarious:

Mal's asking Niska's main guy to take the money back to him.

Niska's guy: Keep the money. Use it to buy a funeral. It doesn't matter where you go, or how far you fly. I will hunt you down, and the last thing you see will be my blade.

Mal: Darn.

Mal kicks the guy and he's sucked out through the engine. Next Niska guy is brought forward.

Mal: Now this is all the money Niska gave us in advance.

Second guy: Oh, I'm good. Best for everyone. I'm right there with you.

Wash: I am a large, semi-muscular man.
(War Stories)

River: Jayne is a girl's name.
(Trash)
(I absolutely LOVE the look on her face when she says this, one of the funniest moments in the entire series for me)

Wow, no one ever mentioned this one:

Jayne: I married me a powerful ugly creature.

Mal: How can you say that? How can you shame me in front of new people?

Jayne: If I could make you prettier, I would.

Oh, I can't believe nobody mentioned one of my personal favorites:

Book: "Oh, I got heathens a-plenty right here!"

(Edited to remove an extra word that was not in the actual line.)

RANDA

I can't believe no one nominated this one:

Mal: (walking away after Badger turns away the cargo in "Serenity") The wheel never stops turning, Badger.

Badger: (in a casual tone) That only matters to the people on the rim.

Mal: "The wheel never stops turning, Badger."

This is one of my favorites and I haven't seen it posted yet.

It emphasizes the issues between Jayne and Simon

Wash: So... two days in a hospital. That's awful. Don't you just hate doctors?
Simon: Hey.
Wash: I mean, present company excluded.
Jayne: Let's not be excluding people. That'd be rude.

MALICIOUS

Another good one is when Mal is being kept overnight by Atherton Wing pending the duel at dawn. Badger's gang is keeping watch on the Serenity crew. After our guys craft their plan and are waiting for the diversion they were going to create, River has a conversation with Badger mimicking his accent. Everyone watches in fascination. Afterward, Jayne says, "That there? Just the kind of di-version we could have used."

Like I always say, ya gotta love Jayne!
