So the purveyor of my local comic book shop informs me that, "Universal has announced a sequel to Serenity." Now, of course, I've heard this sort of thing before. When pressed, he said he'd seen the news on the ticker running during Attack of the Show.

Anybody else see that? 'Cause he's the only one I've heard say so, and I'm apt to think that someone's jumped the gun...

It sounds like they may have run a quick scrawl about Alan Tudyk's comments. Depending on how they presented/misrepresented it, your acquaintance might have simply taken it as additional info.

Otherwise, I expect we'd be seein' a LOT more about it.

Still waitin' for Joss to pop up, almost two days later, to debunk the original report:

http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=30853

http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=30859

'Cause, if he doesn't, it looks more and more likely that Alan copped to something genuine.

Joss wouldn't leave us Browncoats twistin' in the wind over a false rumor. He knows how important this is to all of us.

Hold the line!

Universal has done a good job on their HD website re publicising Firefly see http://www.universalhd.com/Firefly/ for a neat 30 sec promo of our favourite show. Don't forget to say hello on the Firefly threads.

This timeline tells me somethings afoot:

28 July: Firefly is re run on Universal HD.

21 August: Universal releases the Collectors Edition.

30 September: Rumoured that contracts for a sequel expire.

4 October: Alan mentions Serenity sequel

27/28 October: Nathan, Summer, Morena, Alan & Sean will be at the Supernatural Convention's - salute to Firely/Serenity. Wonder where Joss will be ?

Not saying that this is proof but it does have a certain feel to it. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck & quacks like a duck.....

We're still flying.

Give that Browncoat a plastic rocket!

Nice to know somebody else is seein' the same signs.

Ifox on SciFi.com also observed that, had Universal simply wanted to milk a Collector's Edition of Serenity, they would have released it later in the year, for the holiday season. The August release date would appear to be perfectly timed to coincide with whatever decision Universal had to make about their movie option, scheduled to lapse at the end of September.

Add to the timeline:

3 August: Joss states about the BDCE in an interview at Comic Con 2007 that:

"Hope for it (Serenity 2) probably rests with this DVD."

http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/news.php?id=6846

And, when the BDCE started to sell /out of stock/ in a variety of retail venues, it became clear that demand had exceeded supply, and, the original sales projections. Joss, who is usually quite vocal in thanking us Browncoats for our support of this kind of release has been remarkably quiet.

Why might that be? 'Cause, if he were to publically acknowledge that the BDCE had sold very well, he would expose himself to questions about how it affected the possibility of a sequel. Why would he not want to answer that sort of question?

'Cause he wouldn't want to rock the boat for whatever's goin' on with Universal. He wouldn't want to be rushed into making a statement before it was "solid."

Oh, yeah, the signs are there, all right.

Hold the line!

Flying on duct tape and a damaged registry.

If something is afoot, I think that Joss will be giving Alan that special wedgie he won't soon forget for letting the cat out of the bag. Or, perhaps, for starting the rumor. If we're really lucky, he'll be getting TWO!

I can see it now, Joss gets a new number just for Alan to call: 1-800-4-WEDGIE

Time to reprogram that speed dial number, Alan!

I'm thinkin' there might'a been some deliberate motivation behind it. Alan Tudyk is a professional, not the sorta guy to drop irresponsible and potentially inflammatory rumors...

Without good reason.

I know I ordered 4 more copies of the BDCE in response.

Hi guys, I'm new here but not new to FireFly or the World of Whedon.

I love the new rumors of a sequal to Serenity.

Didn't know that Supernatural was having a convention - wish I could go. I love that show.

Did any of you catch Nathan also coming home to his beginnings on One Life To Live for 2 days for their anniversary? Love our Captain so much. Such a loyal guy.

I just caved in and bought a 2nd set of FireFly dvd's. For the support and because for some reason "Ariel" was scratched and unfixable. Also have the companion guides.

I'm so obsessed I have Jaynestown and Ariel on my ipod video as well.

Hopefully the rumors of a return to tv is true as well. CW would be an awesome station for it as it's gaining viewers by the day.

I have all 14 episodes + BDM

Quick edit - I have a lot more than just that on my iPod, but ever since I put that on it, I haven't watched any of the other things.

Even have the original Star Wars trilogy, but I prefer BDM.

I am saving for another ipod with the most memory available strictly for all the FireFly episodes for those plane rides and just plain Mal-Love. I really would love the movie to be available on itunes.

Not to worry dear. Like Jayne, I need the coin.

I used the last coins to get the companion guides and the collector's edition and another set of dvds.

I'm holding the line

Not a youtube viewer.

From what I've seen of other, older posts regarding youtube crackdown/removal, they seem to predicate new releases for $ on DVD.
Some of the removal/crackdown material I read about was on the CE DVD release.

Flyhead over on the old board posted this on October 9th, the Chris B. mentioned is Chris Buchannan Joss' right hand man.

"I got a reply from Chris B. to an email I sent last week. Here are some (slightly paraphrased) things he said:

• Joss will never be finished telling the story of FF/S.

• Keep your fingers crossed.

• The most important thing we fans can do is to keep the Browncoat community strong -- keep posting, keep having special screening, keep Firefly/Serenity in the minds of the critics, media, retailers, on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc.

• In other words, keep flyin'!"

Interesting too how Serenity: Better Days has basically disappeared from discussion (the second DarkHorse Serenity comic). It's release date was continually bumped - last I heard it was suppose to come out late 2007, which is um, like *now* and still no word... almost like someone would rather film that story...

I think Pizmo has stumbled across the real conspiracy here.
They're late putting out the comic so they're letting sequel rumors distract the rabid fans while they scramble to finally get the thing to print.

I prefer a more positive conspiracy: they've been stalling the comic, so it could finally make place for the upcoming sequel. :)

Much as I love Jewel, let's not get all depressed, here. This is what she said:

"Okay, okay, okay: Lets address these Serenity 2 rumors before anything else. I have no idea what you people are talking about! Seems to me someone (with a name that starts with A and ends in LAN) said something in an interview that was misconstrued as the sequel being greenlit, which is not the case at the moment. I will never say it will never happen, because that's just blasphemy in my opinion, but it's not happening at the moment… no matter what you read on the internet. You know better than to believe everything you read, anyway! "

No one, not even the most ridiculously optimistic, has ever said they thought what Alan meant was that Universal (or, anyone else) had greenlighted a sequel.

Pretty much, Jewel's NOT Joss.

So, I'm still waiting to hear from HIM about the rumors about Universal /being interested in/ a sequel, as expressed by Alan in the original interview.

Hang in there, folks. This is far from over.

I think a LOT of people are taking Tudyk's quotes out of context and only posting the bits they want to see. He did say it was a possibility, but he also said a sequel to I, ROBOT (where he was the robot Sonny) is more likely to come first.

STARTROOP

I have a theory, and it is just that, theory. I agree that there is no "green light" for Serenity II. I also believe that there is no "official" discussions going.

However, I do think that there are backroom and lunch time discussions happening. Remember folks that making a movie is a multi-million dollar deal. The days of the .com's are gone and people don't make these kinds of deals on the back of napkin.

My theory (theory means I made it up from a bunch of clues and it might or might NOT have a connection to reality) is that there have probably been some low level folks at the studio that have said, "these numbers are starting to look good". There are probably some MBA types (I can poke fun at MBA"s as I are one) in the head office that are looking at the numbers. They might even have had some lunch time/cocktail hour discussions with Joss about what he thought about it.

The next part of my theory is about Joss himself. Every interview I have seen and everything I have read about him shows him to be very quick witted and shrewd. I also think he wants to do more with the "Verse". The kicker here is that I think he wants to make this a real movie, not a two hour episode. He needs a real budget for that. He also wants to pay the actors real money. This means negotiations because the MBA's want the same rates as before to get what they got. Joss is probably negotiating but wants them to come to him verses him begging (which is what happened with Serenity).

This kind of dance takes time. The buzz among the fan community only helps him. IMHO, he will not kill it unless it becomes obvious that he can't deliver (I think he genuinely likes his fan base and doesn't want them hurt).

I am cautiously optimistic. This is still VERY early days yet and multi-million dollar sales jobs (which is what we are watching here) take time, finesse, and a bunch of plain old hard work. I read these threads every day for more real evidence and I don't see much other than Joss's silence. Alan's remark is interesting, but lacks follow through. Jewel's remark is interesting for what it doesn't say (Alan's remark was about "discussions". Jewel's remark was about a "green light").

So what should we do? First, keep posting and watching. Secondly, BUY the collector's edition (I have already ordered my wife's Xmas present .... don't tell ;-) Finally, be patient. I think Joss is in a dance with the studio people and it will take time.

Remember this is a theory based on just a smidgen of data and a whole lot of creative imagery. I have no inside track and don't really know. I just guessing like all of the rest of us ;-)

Gorram it, startroop!

Some'a us have already made up our minds! Don't you go confusin' us with your fancified reasonable talk =^[.]~=!

Actually, this sounds like a likely scenario. I can't imagine Joss not actively seeking his opportunity, and, I am still optimistic about his ongoing silence. Per startroop's observation, Joss is as loyal to the fans as we are to him, and, I just can't see him allowing us all to torment ourselves with vain hopes.

So, yeah, buy more BDCEs, everybody! And, make sure that, if you're gonna buy licensed merchandise, it's from the Serenity license, 'cause, right now, F*X (holders of the Firefly license) don't need any more of our money than we absolutely have to give 'em. Universal holds the Serenity license, sees the money rollin' in, they'll know we're happy to part with cashy money...

Which is what talks, in this case.

Can't stop the Signal!

I think too that Joss is not killing this rumour because it's akin to poking a hornets nest. It's causing buzz and renewed fervor. Also the extra sales don't hurt.
