I have a problem. My wife "Iremist" needs an objective opinion about a certain career choise. Do I stay at a satalite instalation company, or do I TRY to get a job in a coal mine. Please ask questions and post responces. I know that this has nothing to do with Firefly but as a browncoat I'm asking other browncoats for their informed opinions. And remember "choosing the lesser of two evils is still choosing evil."

I dyed my browncoat black for those whome have gone befor.

I think it's a decision you need to take some time to think about and not jump into quickly. Here's a link to Wikipedia, I would pay special attention to the dangers of coal mining section. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coal_mining
It says that it's the second most dangerous job in America. Thats something huge to consider!! Good luck in what ever you choose and I wish you the best.

Um speaking as someone who just had a serious mine collapse in their state...I'd say NO. Those families wen through hell and it's obvious that regulations for mine safety are minimal and usually not followed.

I used to work for an answering service on the graveyard shift. We answered for a Mine Safety and Health company. I really don't like to think about how many injury reports I had to file. Even without that, consider what coal dust can do to your lungs. If you have any other choice, I'd say don't do it.

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

Satellite install may not be glorious, in fact can be quite nasty, but no where near as bad as getting black lung and living on a resperator for 20 years. It just isn't worth it, especially if you're married. My wife's grandfather worked in a mine, not even coal, molybedneum, and has problems breathing today, and he only worked a few years. Stay above the Ground!

As someone that works for a coal mine I'll give ya my 2 cents.
It's not that bad underground. MSHA regulates the hell out of all coal mines. You don't just get black lung anymore. Coal mines use tons of water to keep the coal dust down so you don't get black lung. As well they use Rockdust everywhere in the mine so that you don't have explosions and things like that. The Sago mine explosion was a terrible accident but it could have been avoided. We have vents that lead above ground to help bleed off the Methane, we had the same thing happen to us that happened to Sago last year, one of the vents was struck by lightning, however our vents were working correctly and while we had a slight fire on the surface of the mine, nothing got underground.
Every mine has an atmospheric montitoring system that watchs all the gas's underground, methane, co2, no2, o2 to make sure everything is ok. If something goes a bit over or a bit under its immiditely addressed and taken care of.
As for cave ins its extremely rare. MSHA takes special care of roof plans. We use Roofbolts, Gigantic steel cans, pillars, and hard core glue to keep the roof up. You don't hear about roof falls much.
Of course there's accidents underground, your working with heavy equipment, long hours and sometimes really dumb people. Alot of people that get hurt are victims of their own stupidity. Don't put your fingers in a pinch point of equiment, watch where your backing up a loader so you don't run shit over, stuff like that. A perfect example is a guy last year died in the mine from a tragic mistake. He parked his loader in front of a bunk of roof screen, 2500 lbs. He took out his wire cutters and cut the wire holding the screen agaisnt the wall. He placed himself between the screen and the loader. As soon as he cut the wire the screen fell and crushed him against the loader.

Hundreds of people die every year in construction accidents, big rig accidents, its just every time there are coal miners trapped or killed its a highly publicized event.

I know alot of guys that have 20 plus years in the mines that have lead perfectly healthy lives. It's perfectly common to live a good life being a coal miner.

I'd like to thank you all for your help in giving the missus your vallid opinion. She is not happy with the idea but the proverbial staw is the fact that I already have my "Under-ground certification". There is no guarantee I could even get the job without six mouths of underground experience. But this is the time to see if the satellite thing can work out.
Sometimes we just need to talk to someone without an agenda,

and that is what we found here. Her and my families both wanted us to things their way and not for the right reasons.
