NERVOUSPETE

Hello folks,

To ease myself through the pain of waiting for Firefly on DVD I thought I'd join your party. I've only ever seen one episode of Firefly here in the UK, which involved stealing some sort of antique laser gun from a floating city. I recall it being full of japes, quips, hi-jinks and forelock tugging moments of depth and intellect. After reading countless reviews from respected sources, I have decided to rip my shirt open and allow shiny discs of cutting edge drama to be flung frisbee like into my bare and vulnerable heart. After showing a friend from Alaska around the scenic spots of England for a week (which she loved, thankfully), she felt rightful guilt at the reward she owed me for all those malibu and cokes I bought her. She asked me to name my reward. I spoke but one word. 'Beer'. But then I realised that Amazon.co.uk doesn't do mail order beer, and so I begged for Firefly instead. Now, with approximately five days to go before I receive the package (along with the superb Master & Commander DVD, hurrah!) I find my excitement mounting to dangerous levels. I've read many of your posts, and you all seem wonderfully reasonable people with a surprisingly high thoughtfulness when it comes to grammar and spelling. This points to fans of intellect, sans capital letters, which in turn points to a worthy show.

Please help me through the dark days of no-Firefly. And then the darker days of no-more-Firefly. I will possibly be writing some fan-fiction when I've watched them. Fear not, I count Emily Bronte, Kurt Vonnegut, Neil Gaiman, Walter Mosely, Elmore Leonard, Hilary Mantel, Michael Moorcock and Mervyn Peake amongst my fave authors, and I am also 25,000 words into a rather experimental novel, so I feel I can mildly entertain. ("Enough of this egotism!" - upper brain)

Thank you for your time. Consider me a well dressed fellow down at the Savoy eyeing an attractive browncoat in the window, and pondering the benefits it will bring to my character and life. Consider a wise purchase made and a gentleman eagerly awaiting his tailor to forward his new garment.

As the Firefly people so often say in appreciation, 'Slinky!'

Yours,

Nervous Pete

P.S: A dry chuckle. From nowhere.

Welcome to our community, I feel you will fit right in.

And don't fret, Serenity, a movie based on Firefly, is being made for Universal Studios - and we should see it in a year or so.

You are lucky to be able to see each episode for the first time, (not to mention in-order). Enjoy.

And btw, it's "shiny", not "slinky". But nice try!

It's amazing how good the show is that it can convert someone after seeing just one episode! (The one you saw sounds like "Trash". Actually, that is one of the last ones, and was unaired in the US.)

Keep flying

Thank you! I'm glad to be here. In actual fact, the 'slinky' thing was merely a feeble joke. I found a certain curious humour in getting it purposely wrong, and thus setting me up to be a rubbish fan. Hence dry chuckles. But thanks again, especially as you say that there is a movie to be coming. Eep!

Ooohh... you had me, til the "Slinky" quote... my fellow fan, the word is, in fact, "Shiny," as in "That diamond is very."

I'm very glad to see another convert, especially one who never had the pleasure of the original airings. And, I'm greatly proud at your insistence (sp?) of owning the entire sadly-short-lived series without having seen the rest of the episodes!

Yes, we are all, indeed, highly intelligent, with all the good grammar and social skills that implies. You'll find many a thought-provoking discussion thread here at fireflyfans.net, along with some rather amusing silliness that never ever approached stupidity. You'll also find disagreements on certain topics, WITHOUT, however, the typical sophomoric disrespect you'll find on most other fan sites.

I'm proud to count myself a member of this bunch of Browncoats, and welcome you warmly to our small-but-growing army of apostles.

By the way, your initiation fee of $175 US is payable by credit card or certified money order. We'll let you know where to send it after your credit history report clears.

Please allow me to give you a BIG DAMN WELCOME to the crew. You prolly don't get that reference having only seen "Trash" however I think I may have the perfect way to tame your wait for the DVDs: Check out http://versaphile.com/download/firefly.html

You can download all of the episodes from there in RealPlayer format. Yep, they're mighty big but if you've got a high speed connection, you'll be watching a few episodes in no time at all.

Now comes the fun part for us here, advising you which episodes to watch. Being as you've only seen Trash my suggestion is to download and watch the series premiere: Serenity - available as two downloads here: http://www.chiabrit.net/FireFly/pilot1.rm and here: http://www.chiabrit.net/FireFly/pilot2.rm.

Then for the back story on YoSafBridge (Mal's partner in crime for the heist of the Lassiter), I'd recommend that "Our Mrs Reynolds" be next on your list. This will fill in some of the blanks that you may have had from watching Trash.

After that? Abandon all hope - you're a browncoat now.

Welcome aboard.

Mal: "Is there blubber?"

SHINY

Welcome NervousPete! Please sit a spell while I summon TeelaBrown, our resident official greeter! (now where did I put that cortex address...I know I have it around here somewhere...just waved her last week...)

p.s. You don't get your official browncoat until you've converted at least 5 more recruits, so once you finish watching the DVDs, lend them out! :)

Please help Haken keep this site running by occasionally clicking on some of the sponsored ad links on the side of the page!

Hi,
You have an upper brain?

And I could tell you were a writer from the first paragraph. Well done and I hope those disks stick in deep. Cheers!
