Hey, so I was watching the BDM again last night and had the subtitles on because my laptop speakers are small. Anyway I got to the part right in the beginning when Simon's breaking River out. They're in the hallway and he tells her that they can't get to the surface from the inside. Then they hear someone coming and Simon looks at River and says ... something ... after which she does her spidery thing on the ceiling. I'd always assumed he said 'hide' or something, but the subtitles said 'Find out' which makes no sense. Replaying it, I can't catch what he says but it's definitely two words. Anyone care to enlighten me? It's just a tiny little thing, but it's been bugging me all day . . .

Also, if you're confused about what people are saying in other parts of the movie or series, feel free to post/complain about it too.

He is supposed to say "Find a h...". "h" as in hiding place.

This is one reason why I love the shooting script - you know exactly what they were supposed to say.

Thank you! That definitely makes more sense now, 'cause Simon's not supposed to be the one saying crazy things- that's River's job. Watching with the subtitles on can sometimes be helpful, but also amusing as they seem to get quite a few things wrong. This can be amusing. For example, as I continued watching, the scene where Serenity is spinning out of control after being hit by the Reaver EMP, Jayne is thrown about inside the ship while Kaylee clearly yells "Strap in!" although the subtitles have her saying "Stop it!" like an order, haha.

You could activate the subtitles option on your dvd to find out for sure.

He does say, "Find out," and for the life of me I can't make sense of it.
May be Joss having a good joke on us.

well I know someone who does captions for a living and they work off of the shooting script. If someone ad libs or something then they have to catch it the best they can... my best guess is the line is an ad lib and the best the person could make out he said " find out" Probably said "find a" and got cut off. Most caption people aren't paying any attention to the movie itself so errors like that are common...

Perhaps, but it could also be an ambiguous message which will have significance at another time.

My favorite is from 'The Message" where Tracy informs us, "You're a rabbit, Mal"

The only thing cooler would be if that was the actual line. ;)

Wait, what does Tracey really say??? I always thought that was right!

The one that bugs me in the BDM is "Guess who needs to get innocked 'fore we hit planet side." I only got that after reading part of the script, we're never given an explanation for this line in the movie (this wouldn't matter if it were understandable and comprehensible, but it ain't), and to me, it always sounded like he was sayin' Kaylee needed to get knocked! Just the "guess who" always made me think KAYLEE because at that moment, he points his thumb towards (I guess) the infirmary... but since they're on the upper deck, it points into the engine room at Kaylee. Drives me nuts! Sorta.

That must be the shot Simon gives Mal before they set down to rob the payroll. Apparently Mal needed an inoculation. Just like "The Train Job" there must be a bug on this planet that Mal was not yet protected from.

That is a good question, since most if not all the Reavers are suffering from radiation poisoning, but just imagine some of the stuff each planet has to offer like Bowden's Malady in the Train Job.

I expect it would merely slow them down some, if it had any effect at all.

What I've always wondered is, how come the Serenity crew isn't affected by the Pax on Miranda, as it was circulated through the air? I suppose maybe it's been long enough for it to have been circulated out or something. Either that or Serenity 2 involves the BDHs becoming BDRs and rampaging through the 'verse.

I think that they stopped circulating it, but too little, too late for the residents... and it probably takes much longer than a couple hours to really affect you, also.

Plus - yeah, I know that it's an inoculation against various planetside quirks and bacteria and diseases, but I only found that out by reading about it, y'know? Be nice if they explained something like that in the movie or just left it out. I can understand the whole, "Well, you don't have to explain EVERYTHING!" No, but it's not a mystery secret thing that has a potential storyline - it's just a random line that has a wtfbbqhuhwhatev reaction. From me, at least. Before looking into it.

Captioning is far from perfect.

Case in point: Watch "Safe" with subtitles on. When Mal/Zoe swoop in to save River/Simon...watch the subtitles.

Mal's line, which is pretty easy to hear and also listed in the shooting script, is "Gotta say, Doctor, your talent for alienating folk is near miraculous."

The subtitle? "[inaudible]"

I thought so too. The subtitles do say 'guess who' but when I backtracked to listen again, it sounded more like 'I.' I'm guessing that maybe it did say 'guess who' in the script, but Nathan just said it more naturally.

PAX is or was a biological agent which would de severely degraded by weather over a short span of time so I would imagine the PAX would be inert after twelve years.

Hello Shameless:

Like everything in life there are so many people involved that someone misses a beat once in a while. So an adlib that is different from the script may not get noticed. And scripts themselves get changed and the people who are responsible for the captions don't receive an update.

I actually missed the inoculation statement and wondered why Simon was giving Mal that shot in the arm. It was your orignal post that finally pulled it all together for me.

I wonder how many foreign films I have watched and the captions were not what were the actual words spoken. Unless you get the script a person would never know.
